Just like the NYC Police turned their backs on Mayor de Blasio at funerals, our fan base should do the same, or even better, walk out to the concourse for the halftime show. Let Tim's band play in front of a totally empty stadium. I know the students in the band are only following what the band director told them to do, so I feel bad for them, but a statement needs to be made. It would surely make all the news feeds, and let decide whether or not Tim should be reprimanded.

Why try to embarrass a group of students who are doing their best to represent RU? Additionally, since band director has already announced he is leaving, what is the point? Reprimanded for what?

The stadium might be empty anyway.

Could not believe my eyes (or ears) with that Michigan fight song nonsense - but don't think taking it out on the kids is a good idea. Fact is the band director is the PB type who still thinks we are playing lehigh. Probably wanted the visiting fans to feel safe.

They have been trying to duplicate what is apparently a bit of a big ten tradition of playing the opposing team's fight songs. It's supposed to be a measure of courtesy between schools, or so I read.

Lots of fans, those left in the stadium, unaware of the tradition, decided to take the opportunity to vent and loudly cursed out the band. And apparently lots of fans here are still either unfamiliar with the tradition and/or don't care.

... and the good news is he is gone after this year. Now when they give him a tribute the last game I may be getting a hotdog.

I am pretty sure they play the fight song before the game. Not in the stadium during the game to pump up the opponents fans - especially when our team is losing by 80.....common sense needs to be applied

The tradition is playing the opposing teams fight song as part of the pregame show which is cool. I think Tim is saying the tradition extends to playing the opposing teams fight song in the stands and on that I have to call BS based. I was at the Michigan game last year in Ann Arbor and no one from the Michigan band came to the Rutgers section to honor that tradition. That being said as much as I can't stand Tim and am glad this is his last year, can't condone boycotting the band itself.

When I was at the OSU game two years ago they played our fight song BEFORE the game. That was cool. Not DURING the game though. Don't recall TTFP playing our fight song when I was at that game last year though......

The tradition is for the band to play the visiting teams fight song pregame not to play it repeatedly during the game. All I keep hearing from Tim Smith is we wanted to make our visiting fans feel welcome. Well you know what how about you show that same respect to the team, the parents, and families of the athletes and the home fans that pay your salary. This is the same man that complained when Syracuse fans used to take over the RAC. Well you know what Tim you just rolled out the red carpet for all that to happen once again on a much larger stage.

Playing before. Cool and classy.

Playing during the game behind those visiting fans while you're being blown out. Dumb and stupid.

He is gone after this year and seems to me that was a middle finger at somebody. Maybe us? LOL

And I have not seen this done at any of of our other B1G home games before.

Did not read through the bulk of posts, but I believe playing the other teams alma mater pregame is ok, it shows a touch of class....

That is where it stops, you don't do it during the game and in the stands...

Always wondered why the Rutgers band never play as much as some of the other bands like in the SEC, ACC, and other B1G schools I see on TV. I think I now know why Rutgers play all that PA music to drown out the band during the games.

Whatever the band directors motivation, he put those kids in potentially harms way or at the very least an awkward situation to play for the other school DURING THE GAME (NOT PREGAME).

Repeatedly playing the opposing team's fight song does seem a bit much, that's true.

In any event, our ticket group tends to walk out onto the concourse during halftimes anyway, stretch our legs, celebrate or commiserate, enjoy the local scenery, etc. But I don't think much of the idea of boycotting the band. Maybe a conversation w/the band director would suffice?

We have bigger fish to fry.

Yes we do.

But like the "broken window" theory, it starts with the little things.

* Hopefully this has already taken place.

Tim Smith is the sort of guy who will claim he's quitting, and then randomly show up the next time for work and pretend nothing happened and go back to the same old same old.

A week ago at Ohio State, a small traveling OSU band came to the Rutgers section and played the RU fight song in the 3rd qtr.. I know people are upset about the score but there's no reason to take this out on the band.
Not saying this isn't true but it directly contradicts what I have experienced in visiting other stadiums as well as multiple people that I know that were at this game.

Now I get what the OP was referring to. I thought it was odd when I heard them playing the Michigan fight song during the 3rd quarter. I don't care what the score is, I don't think we should be firing up the opponents crowd either. Still, I would not take it out on the students by boycotting halftime.

No the opposition plays the fight song of opposing teams pre game, not all through the second half over and over again while traveling the stadium ....... And especially should not do it while the home team is getting a beat down of epic proportions, so the visitors can sing loudly after each touch down and feel like it's their home game.

But please do not show up the band.., they are kids who work hard to make a great atmosphere at the games amd who knows who was responsible for this error in judgement, band director or college students? Let's move on from this but it should never ever happen again only pre game.

If this is the case then play it once . I felt as if I was at a Michigan home game . It's one thing to make the opposition feel comfortable but they played Hail to Victors over and over again.....during third and fourth. If we were smacking down Ohio State/Michigan, I can assure you their traveling band nor their fans would allow their band to play our fight song over and over again while we all sang and cheered. Once maybe, but literally heard it about 8 times between 3rd and 4th. Still no band protest please!!!! Let's learn from this and move on!

At Penn State they play the visiting team song prior to the game if the schools band is not there. I sit a few sections from the visitor section and I have never heard the band playing the visiting team song during the game.

only at Rutgers. Guys is either a huge dope or a huge jerk.

Penn state played it before the game same as OSU

Lol. Does the band play the actual game?

If you were mad, you would just sell your tickets. The band works hard, and does not play any football.

Sheesh.

Playing the visitors' fight song during the pregame = class and a B1G tradition

Playing the visitors' fight song during the second half of the game = problematic in almost any scenario. If Rutgers were up 78-0, playing the visitors' fight song could be perceived as taunting or mocking the visitors. If the game were tied, the home team needs every ounce of support from the stands, and the visitors' fight song wouldn't help. And in the case of Saturday, when Rutgers was down and out, it just came off as taunting and mocking the Rutgers team and fans in our own stadium. It serves no good.

Save it for the pregame, and maybe do it again post-game after the Rutgers alma mater and fight song.

The fact this needs to be explained over and over again is sad.

How some of you in this thread do not understand the difference in what @OTBOTOR is saying is confusing to say the least.

No the band does not play the game.

Let me ask a question. If it was your son on the field getting his head kicked in would you be so appreciative the school band playing the opponents fight song?

I do not think you would appreciate the good will and the tip of the hat by the band

Exactly. Anyone complaining is an idiot.

Need - NOBODY is complaining about playing it "before the game." It's the fact that Smith - the weasel that he is - has taken it much further than that. Playing it for your opponents fans, during the game, is a God-damn slap in the face to:

- ALL alumni
- ALL student-athletes
- ALL members of the coaching staffs, administration, et al

...and any other Rutgers fans IMHO.

The band is the loudest part of "the 12th man." They are part of the game environment. There is a reason "home field advantage" comes with a few points attached. Playing the visitors' fight song to rile up visiting fans in the second half of the game could come with consequences in a close game, and in a blowout it is just embarrassing.

I guess so. The result on Saturday is not because they played the song, or anything near remotely having to do with people who play instruments. We have no QB, and no play maker at any position on the field. We should not be using the band as a scapegoat for any reason.
