I know that Richie has said numerous times that Brandin Knight is responsible for the lineups but yesterday completely cemented for me that whoever is doing the substitutions has zero feel for the game and yesterday it was as if they were trying to lose the game. With 14:28 he takes out both Harper and Bailey and goes incredibly to a 4 guard offense with Somerville at center and no man taller than 6'4"; Davis , Dercack, Acuff, Williams; This lineup stays on the court till the 10:44 mark, so not only do you have no height on the court but you have absolutely no offense and boy did it show
Next is the end game; I know Bailey had 4 fouls and was not having a good game shooting but he kept him out till the 1:30 mark again ridiculous. He also doesn't have Grant in the game and leaves a 6'4" Dercack guarding the 6"10" Garcia who easily just shoots right over Dercack. And then he does the same thing at the end of the game keeping Dercack in and not utilizing Grant to guard Garcia!!!
Then this gets me to Pikell who again has no clue when to call a time out as Minnesota scores the basket to tie the game at the 8 second mark and we in bounds the ball to Dylan who has a full head of steam going up the court and he calls a timeout; so no we have to inbounds the ball with Dylan getting the ball going backwards at the 3/4 court and as we saw subsequently lost the ball!!!
This timeout may have been more egregious than the lineups

Both Knight and Pike make some of the most questionable decisions. They will never be successful at this level. Also they are poor evaluators of talent.

Harper made plays down the stretch.....maybe, just maybe that is because of the rest you mentioned.

As for Bailey.....I had the exact opposite take. I was wondering whether Pike had the guts to keep Bailey on the bench at the end of the game because the 5 on the floor were playing so good and frankly Ace was playing bad.

Let's not forget the Iowa game (i think it was the Iowa game)......we play sluggish and we make a run at the end of the 1st half to get a 8-10 point lead with Ace and Dylan on the bench. Ace and Dylan return in the 2nd half we play poorly and lose.

They are 84th in bart rankings...2nd worst in B1G....

Any team in the Top 100 is going to be able to beat teams. Doesn't mean they are good, it means they are capable of good days.

Let's stop sugarcoating Minnesota. They are a bad B1G team. We are also bad because of our inability to play defense.

Wish "Superwriter" Politi had asked this at the post game press conference

Agree with this. And was Dortsch hurt? Not sure why he wouldn't see the floor instead of having Dercack try to guard Garcia. And the Grant minutes are a little baffling. He seems to be playing better, but Pike leaves him glued to the bench for extended periods.

We should never be taking both Dylan and Ace off the court together.

But the most egregious decision for me was not inserting at least one of them back into the lineup after the time out (after Minnesota had already cut way into the lead with them on the bench).

They stay on the bench and we have a few more awful offensive possessions and give up 4 straight points only for us to call another time out to sub them in.

The handling of Ave at the end of the game was odd as well. I guess it worked because he didn’t foul out and we went to overtime but with a minute left you keep him in there the rest of the game.

Did Ace take more than 2-3 quality shots against Minnesota?
Maybe he was trying to see a shot go down to get into a rhythm as he was short on all his shots. If he hits one maybe he hits 3-4 in a row. I am one that doesn’t mind ACE draining 2’s all day. For the life of me why Pike hasn’t gotten him the ball at the foul line is puzzling at best but a missed opportunity especially on a day his first shot doesn’t go in.

And since we don't run any plays for him, he has to get his own shot every time down the floor
You are clueless if you think that Ace needs to have a play run for him to get a shot. Ace can get his own shot every time he touches the ball & is impossible to defend.

I think the point is that running action for him would in theory improve the quality of the looks.

Yes you can say here’s the ball go get your shot, but chances are that ends in a lower quality look.

you must have missed the 25 times we have run a double screen from the wing for him to get a catch and shoot in the corner or every 1/3 game off the jump ball we back screen his man for a hopefully alleyop

Not questioning his ability. But it wouldn't be the the worst idea to run an actual offense to create open looks, even for Ace

He had scored over 500 points 450 points minimum were him in ISO just being an elite athlete. 4 maybe 5 alley oops and definitely the curl screen going to Ace is right . Those are a handful

Pike runs zero offense! He is an ISO coach

Sure he can get his own shots, but a better coach can get him better shots.

He actually did play a lot this game was 5-5 from the field and helps on the boards and does seem to have a good knack for the pick and roll; But you are right the last few games Pikell takes him out at the 3 minute mark of the second half and doesn't bring him in and you are also right we could have used Dortsch in spots and while Martini plays hard he only had 1 rebound
