Interesting how the article noted the people at the next level want Sanders to pass more. Show he is a pass first, true point guard.
Right now, Sanders is trying to win games. The team is not shooting at a high rate. Next year, he could easily be a 5-7 assist per night kid. With the addition of Thiams improvement(high release), another year of potential progress with Williams, Freeman, Baker, he should be able to show them.
That would be great for Sanders and RU. He has the market to do it here. People will take notice.
He could be a 5-7 assist per game guy right now if he and the coaching staff wanted him to be. last year he shot over 50% from 2 in conference play. This year he is at 40% from 2.
Last year B1G play 529 minutes 73 assts 46 TOs
This year B1G play 382 minutes 35 assts 36 TOs
That would require his teammates to be capable of making 5 to 7 field goals a game. We all know that a ton of those points last year were in serious gar-bage time against scrubs. Wasn't facing the opposing team's best defenders for 40 minutes. He could be a 5-7 assist per game guy right now if he and the coaching staff wanted him to be. last year he shot over 50% from 2 in conference play. Good point. Still, the coaching staff wants to win games. In crunch time, Sanders is the guy to do it or get the team there. The coach wants to win right now so he can get some recruits. I think other players have offensive versatility, but not in the amount that Sanders has.
Right now, he has some type of a green light. And after the first home win, when you saw Williams hug Sanders, Williams was thanking him for doing what he did to win the game. Because at the end of the day in sports, you win-happy, or lose and are depressed.
I have always been critical of ball security. Many have. Solution- what you and many posters have mentioned, Sanders and Johnson not being on the floor together at the same time.
he could be an assist first guy, but he is the only guy who can create his own offense. And tough to be a 7 assist guy on a team that barely cracks 60 and shoots >40%

That's hogwash.
that might explain a VERY small part of it. An offset would be last year there was no Freeman or Gettys and Williams was worse from the perimeter.
You can believe what you want to believe. The raw data on the offensive end is putrid as a team and as bad individually for Corey. we are 264th in the country in offensive efficiency and I just can't believe we have 264th offensive talent. 125-150 maybe.
Looking for others to score when there is no real threat is not hogwash. Unless you can show reason and show data otherwise.
Sanders has not yet become a point guard. I absolutely would agree with that statement. To think he is the main issue though, is false. In the big moments, who else do you give the ball to? People know the reality of the situation. They need to win now, and the coaches now even if Sanders does not make that pass, they need to win before they can do anything else.
Wins and losses matter most. Sanders in critical moments gives you that chance more than anyone else.
Coming to America... one of my all-time favorite comedies! [thumb2]
A good point guard creates for others.
I like our offense...when it is used.
We tied the OSU game up with Mike Williams dribbling and passing to CJ Gettys. I think the coaching staff is making a major mistake.
If I am the coach the 1st 7 and last 5 seconds off the shot clock is Corey. The 18 seconds in between should be about getting good shots for other. when he does penetrate in those final 5 seconds he MUST be a threat to pass.
In preparing to play Rutgers coaches aren't worried about stopping Sanders. They want him to penetrate. They want him to go right. They know exactly what he will do and where on the court he will do it. The result isn't a very high percentage play.
What do you think Pitino is doing today in practice? An athletic walkon is playing Sanders and bigs are rotating and Pitino is telling them, "Don't worry he will shoot it."
Would you prefer to sit him?
No. Easiest fix is for him to sometimes look to pass when driving hard to the basket. If he continues to defend I want him out there.
In a perfect world my point guard is a threat from the outside, is a PLUS defender, and can beat his man off the dribble and is a threat to score or distribute.
I'd rather have a James Beatty type who can't beat his man off the dribble, but can shoot OVER a Sanders type who can beat his man (at ANY time), but cant shoot.
Without him, we do not win one big ten game.
I don't agree with that. Obviously Nigel and Laurent would need to step up. Let's not forget early in the year some...cough cough higgins cough...were saying johnson was better than sanders.
I don't know if I said that entirely, but I thought Johnson had more skill. I am not afraid at being wrong on a message forum. Not to be Mr. Right, or prove anything.
LOL!!!I'd rather have a James Beatty type who can't beat his man off the dribble, but can shoot OVER a Sanders type who can beat his man (at ANY time), but cant shoot.
I don't think you said it entirely. You were frustrated with Sanders play. I actually liked the way Sanders played offensively as point guard early in the year. Most of the reason was he faced mostly zone.
I believe the loss to PSU scarred Pikiell. We did everything right on the defensive end and still lost by 10+ on our home court. i think he gave sanders the keys right after that game.

The dribble handoff absolutely killed us in the Indiana game. That was the last game they heavily employed the dribble hand off. That's the only difference I've seen. And it was a great change.
The dribble hand off is the set up for dribble bac door cut that has worked.
Sanders is the ultimate 4 year player. He's got great talent but glaring holes from an NBA perspective. Sticking it out and developing is the best thing for his long term career.
And let's be honest, Corey wants to be a showman, and for the next two years Rutgers is the place to do it considering his built-in cache in this league.
At the next level Corey needs to be a point guard. I dont know if he will but he needs to stay at least another year and if he stays four years i think the payoff would be there for him. He needs over time to become a better passer, less turnovers and continue to improve on defense. He also needs to continue to improve his outside shooting. With this coach and this system if he stays his stock will improve exponentially each year as he becomes a polished player. Given that he took a look at the draft last year not sure he will have the patience to hang around but if he does he will have a career at Rutgers where he is the guy that helps bring Rutgers to a level that we have not seen in years.
