Basketball Rutgers Basketball Suffers Double OT loss to USC in Big Ten Tournament

That's just not true. When nobody was talking about Rutgers, we were not a national embarrassment. We were ignored and forgotten. When people talk about how we couldn't even make the tournament with 2 generational 5 star recruits, we are a national embarrassment and there will be headlines about it

I'd rather we be ignored than lose with top talent like this
We were still on tv getting embarrassed. Nothing will ever compare to that ineptitude.

We lost with a freshmen led team that had to futur NBA guys. That was way more exciting even if frustrating

It made no sense. Not only this - but I’m more convinced than ever that the press is also Pike’s best offense. We couldn’t buy a basket either today until we started making transition shots off their turnovers. That’s how we scored the year Mag got hurt and we ran press too. The issue last year was the guys we had didn’t finish off those steals.

Maybe - but then at the very end we pressed again. It was already too late, we ran the damn thing with nobody down there at all. I guess at that point we were just done.

J Will bricked the FTs and the 3 but he made the comeback possible. I said I hope we commit to the press next year, and now I’m more convinced than ever that’s what would give us the best chance to turn things around. If that’s the direction we go in, I want JWill to be a part of it. If we’re planning to run a halfcourt offense through Somerville and hope we get a few shooters, then yeah, J Will is not a fit with that. But I fear we’ll end up with a record like Seton Hall’s if we go in this direction. Offense will be worse than this year while D will be the same if not worse.
J will needs to go....it was bad overall performance..a few good plays shouldnt fool you

Thank god i didnt watch the game last night. Might not watch another as long as pike is here, just not worth the time or money investment

It’s not a matter of specific “plays”. He was the catalyst that allowed us to come back 15 down. Tyson solid too. J Will was involved in forcing every one of those USC turnovers with the trap.

We weren’t winning 5 straight so this season was over anyway. But Pike needs to think long and hard about the strategy he’s aiming for next season. He’s not getting replaced now so that discussion should end. There’s no point in thinking about something that won’t happen.

Argument can be made that Pike’s most effect offenses at Rutgers have been the ones that score off the press. Does Pike have the guts to plan to move in this direction?

Other studio set it best. It’s a men’s game. Freshmen are not nearly as valuable no matter how talented.

Recruit some men

Frosh can be effective in a press. Exhibit A once again, 2014-15 WVU. There wasn’t really anyone on that roster that would’ve commanded a huge NIL bag. Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles were frosh. Probably 3 stars. And Pike would have 3 more chances to roll the dice than Huggs had with the schollie limit bump. 15 schollies - hard to sell that you can keep everyone happy but a heck of a lot easier to sell the idea of PT for a larger group in a press system.

By the way - I get the risk involved. Moving in this direction parallels (in some ways) a decision to move to an Army option style offense in football.

What a sad season this was. There was so much hype. So much hope. Are the end, it's the same painful feeling back to back years.

Very neat having Dylan and Ace play on the banks for us this year. Let's be real though, outside of that, this year was a disaster of a year. What makes the ending of this year more challenging is that there really is no light or hope to look for with next year.
Just listen to the announcers.. Robbie. Why did it take Rutgers to wait till the 2nd half to play hard?

Post game.. They went after Harper who backed off on defense.

Etc, etc... but they will be top picks. Congratulations guys. You'll make great money but as college players you seriously failed. See ya.
Leave Immediately for the NBA!!!
Right now lottery pick.
Stay another year: undrafted
RUN RUN RUN!!!!

Dylan couldn’t have played a full season of the style we shifted to yesterday with the press. You could see him huffing and puffing by the end. He wasn’t in the game for the short stints we pressed vs. Minny or he was playing back.

When you don’t have strong interior post play and can’t stop anyone down low, a halfcourt style is usually a bad idea. But a high octane pressing style of play isn’t likely to be effective if your targeting 32+ minutes of PT for 2 guys on your roster. Seeing Pike use it the last few games reminded me of what our D looked like that season with Mag.

That WVU pressing team I referenced only played one kid even 25+ mpg for perspective. Similar thing with the successful VCU presser teams. Either we’re going to shell out the money for a veteran starting center who can defend at the BIG level, or this is what we’re going to have to try to become. Otherwise Eddie Jordan era here we come. I’m near certain we will not not win running a traditional halfcourt defense with Lathan at the 5 25+ minutes. Even with improvements, we will still be very weak on straight up defense.

this.. missed free throws for one a few games ago. If you are the guy, you don't stand there and dribble the last 20 seconds and then pass to a teammate with 2 seconds left on the clock in a tie game.
but in his defense it sure looked like Pike was trying to make JWill the end game star with those inbounds and that last shot set up. not the 1st time all we needed was a drive and possible foul and 1 point. Instead we set up JWill for a 3. Just horrendous coaching.

he also set up Acuff for a 3 coming out of time out. And don't forget not getting off a shot coming out of a time out with 8 seconds on the shot clock (and it almost happened again, but Dylan threw up a semi wild shot). Coaching malpractice tonight, there are numerous other examples

This team wasn't deep enough athletically to press for extended periods of time. Hell, our two best players are 18 year olds suffering from asthma. That's so Rutgers.

Now it's a bad thing to set up a 3 for your best 3 point shooter? There are some seriously questionable complaints starting to come up.

There were 3 guys on Dylan on the last shot. He really didn’t have a good look and as we all saw in OT, his legs were shot.

ok, but then as usual nobody was moving and we settled for a 3 point shot from J Will. Why not have someone else with the ball then so Harper could just rest for a final burst? IDK...just always seems lack design and guys not moving towards the basket and a chance for the offensive rebound.

Pike with a rim protector has always installed a press and played it thru the years . Not sure if you are saying it is new.
Yes he has to use it but not exclusively. Thought he did a great job changing up defenses in the second half. Need to see more of that next year regardless of who is on the team.

Acuff should've been R 3 point option in that situation. Unbelievable Pike didnt take a TO there and draw-up a play for Harper to drive to the hoop or drive and dish to Sommerville close to the basket or Acuff as 3rd option kickout for a 3. Heck a TO would've given Dylan a chance to catch his breath. Really bad job by Pike there.

Acuff missed if couple wide open threes in last five minutes or so. One off a time out where was actually a well run play and he had a great look.

the point he was actively looking to get the ball out of Dylan's hands. sure it was a good look...but Pike isn't running shit for dylan. Last possession call a freaking time out and come up with a play for DH. Still rather have Dylan shoot it over Acuff.

also ignore about 20 other Pike mistake this game. even if I give you that I could be wrong on Acuff's shot.
