Given reports that Hobbs has requested and received permission to speak to both Lonergan and Hurley for the HC Position (as well as several unnamed others) - I think it's fair to say that both are the front runners for the HC Position and thus who do you prefer and who do you think ultimately gets the gig?

I prefer Lonergan (who according to what I heard last weekend is/was the #2 choice of Hobbs) over Hurley

Should it be Hurley, I'd be fine (and just as excited) - but I prefer Lonergan.

Who do I think gets the job? Wow flip a coin...lol. It sure does look like Hurley but for whatever reason, I still think it'll be Lonergan - as he has been a success at all 3 prior HC spots - Catholic; Vermont and GW - and he will represent RU very well - on and off the court.

Lonergan ironically may be in the area shortly - if he is still HC at GW - as should GW and Monmouth win their 1st round NIT Games - then GW will play at Monmouth in Round 2 of the NIT.

Next few days should be fun - but whoever becomes HC - I'll be very excited for sure.

Want Hurley. Thought he was never coming here. Figure he'd make the tourney this year and be off to a huge job.

Was pushing Lonergan here for 2 years. Think Hurley has higher ceiling.

IMOH it's not "fair" to say that "both are the front-runners" when others are being interviewed and Hobbs has flat-out stated something like "initial interviews are NOT over and will take another day or two..." so, please, can we stop with the nonsense?

I mean hey, maybe they end up being the top 2 candidates - who knows - but the speculation from earlier today has clearly been shot down by Hobbs.

Lonergan is a great coach but I think it will be very difficult to get him to leave DC. But Hobbs is a winner so who knows.

Lonergan can teach us how to handle that tricky zone defense which baffled us.

What was the deal with that? A spider web or something?

Lonergan would be my first choice. I really like his team's style of play. -That said, though, I'd be perfectly fine with Hurley, as well.

I don't think we end up with either. I can see negotiations with Dan hitting a snag and I think Mike is happy in D.C. (or waiting for a situation less of a mess than RU).

My gut says we end up with Steve Pikiell.

I want Lonergan over Hurley. Either is ok though. I think Masiello would be ok too just don't like him as much. I'd be disappointed with Pikiell.

More I read about Pikiell more impressed I am. He has had a great run. Still want Sendek. Lonergan is a great X and O's coach.

Lonergan IMO is a better coach------Hurley the better recruiter. He would be my choice.

Schmidt from St Bonnie would IMO be the best guy they could hire.

BIGEastPhil, Are you willing to give up the name of the #1 choice/longshot you referred to recently?

You go with who can recruit our area better, which is the top priority. That would probably be Hurley. Unless there's a really big name out there which no one is talking about. You would think a Big 10 job in a fertile recruiting backyard would make it desirable, but.....

Prefer the Jersey guy - Hurley by a wide margin. Lonergan is too laid back and we had that personality type with our last coach. Need a high energy coach to recruit NJ and Hurley is the guy.

I think Hurley gets the job. Hope he is more flexible with his contract terms during this round of negotiations.

I agree.

I don't think Lonergan can recruit the top athletes.

and please don't tell me how great he is at x's and o's. That is not our problem! Our problem is we don't recruit good basketball players and that is what needs to change. Not offensive schemes, not reboudning drills (or the lack thereof). We don't play great defense because we don't have good enough athletes, not because we have lacked "coaching" acumen.

RECRUIT RECRUIT RECRUIT and then go and recruit some more. That is what we need

Both have questions to me and they really aren't that much different. But Lonergan has had a longer career and has won a lot during his career. He's even got a national championship at the DIII level (that's a long way from D1 but it tells me he can coach). His recruiting is good but not great. I would give Lonergan the edge but I would need some questions answered.

Now if Hurley had as long as a career would he have a similar track record of winning. Yes possibly but we don't know. That's why I say they're not all that different. I think Lonergan gets the edge because he's shown the ability to win. Now if you put a lot of stock into Hurley's recruiting then I could see why that might give him an edge or at least even things out with Lonergan. Hurley's a good recruiter but I'm not entirely sold on Hurley being a recruiting superstar.
