Martini on Lee

It was clinical the way they orchestrated those switches. Either switch to the mismatch, or don't switch and give Lee a clear lane to the basket on the screen. There's was no help in the lane, because they were floating their big wide... same way they pulled Omoruyi away from the rim.

I was sitting right behind the Princeton basket in the second half, and everyone was yelling to get Martini out. He was trying his best, but continually got abused going to the basket, and his negatives far outweighed his positives on the court.

It was a master class in hunting.
This is what NBA teams do.
Find a mismatch and exploit it.

The last play when Lee ended up passing and turned it over - Princeton ran two screens because the first one didn't work.

Lee called over Martini's man from the corner.
But Ace and Zach switched guys so Ace went over instead.

Lee ignored the screen (with Ace's new man) and called for Zach's new man to come set the screen.
Just to get Martini on him.

I couldn't believe we called a time out after it had happened two or three times in a row, only to come out of the time out and watch it happen again. That time out had to be about shutting that down. Blitz Lee, have the help come immediately after the switch to make him give it up, something.

Watching this team play defense makes me not want to watch this team at all.

When people say "NBA plays no defense" based on a couple of highlights think of Martini on Lee.

NBA teams do this nearly every play all game long.
You could have Caleb and Mag on the floor.
They arent getting close to Lee.

It's not just mindless drives to the hoop like our offense.
NBA teams run deliberate offenses to get players the ball in advantageous situation.
Same as Princeton was doing with Lee.

Big mistake over so many possessions. Martini gave it his best but just couldn't stay with Lee, nor should he have been expected to.
Critical call--the foul on Williams on the 3 pt shot. Lousy call. Result, 3 pts for Princeton.

Was criminal. Don’t know how our guys didn’t anticipate the need the help D.

Well their coach coached an offensive masterclass knowing we would constantly switch. Princeton kept screening until Martini ended up on Lee. Steve could never….
Martini is a disaster. Cut him. And Pike coaching like he's new to game of basketball.

Funny though, Martini made a big three and clutch foul shots…oh well.

This is ON PIKE

We should have forced a double team ….and get the ball out of his hands and see if someone else was good enough to move it around …especially later in the shot clock .

Plus … we did NOTHING to force him to his left. He killed us going right and we didn’t force him to test if he could make it happen going left

Plus ….we had Bailey and two centers out there for how long ??? We should have had derkack at center the last 4-5 minutes when they were determined to play high pick and roll

Today was a poor coaching effort with pike, and I would have said it even if the last shot rolls out

From our master genius defensive coach. F in stupid match up and the lack of help side defense is pitiful.
And I'm not blaming the player for his shortfall there. He did his best. Defending a quick guard from up top to the rim by himself is not his skill set.
What exactly does Pike watch during the game?

Derkack abused like Tyson’s speed bag too. Sure, the refs often bailed him out on his clumsy drives but both of them can’t even stay with their own shadows.

We switch everything. Teams know it now so it’s very easy to run an offense against us. Pike must teach them to fight over the screen or go to something else.

Or never let Martini play another second

But it’s not just a Martini issue. They put JMike in a bad spot multiple times on the first half. They even had Harper pinned a few times. Switching is a defensive principle. When you have a smart athletic team, I get it. We don’t.

At this point playing zone can’t be worse. We let teams score at will.

Besides wasting that timeout with 54 seconds left , this was my biggest gripe. Not once , twice, three, four but five times in a row martini was abused. After the second time, he should have taken him out. This was awful to watch.

We're past the time of being able to teach things, is the problem. All of these guys need to be taught how to defend the way Pikiell wants them to defend - and very few guys are bringing anything from Pike's approach last year. We're at the "making small adjustments" phase - and I don't know if there's time left in the season to get them to a point of playing fundamentally sound defense.

There’s still time to teach. We probably have 10 to 12 practices before our first Big Ten game in 2025. It’s obvious that switching is not going to work.

I thought the switching was a mistake. I don’t know about the double team but not sure why we didn’t hard hedge there martini couldn't contain after the switch.

Lee got his 4th foul with 5:15 left in the game, but we never went after him to foul him out. I’ve noticed this in other games when an opposing star gets 4 fouls. Pike just does not seem to believe in “going after” opposing players.

Martini nor Hayes can play in BIG1G. Its amazing how both of them are so unathletic
It's not amazing. That's why they were at lower levels, athleticism, size, speed. That's why they have D1, D2 etc to begin with. Everyone thinks because someone was good in some low level league that will translate to one of the highest levels of basketball and it often does not.

Princeton has plenty of athletic guys on their team

Should've taken martini out sooner.. once he was out the defense picked up. Jwill, jMike, derkack, Dylan and ace allows you to switch everything. That's the one critique I have otherwise I was actually encouraged by this game. Surprised by the sky is falling theme on the board.

Is Lee a good 3 pt shooter? Not sure why Davis didn’t go under the screens to test him?

Princeton hunted out Martini and put him on an island with Lee.

How many times have we hunted out Lee or similar defender with Harper or Ace and put the defense on an island?

For as much iso we do, it wouldn't hurt to make a couple screens and get a better mismatch first.

He's not the only player on this team that can't guard in a man-to-man defense. Might be time for a 2-3 zone. Give Boeheim a call

NBA defense is overall terrible until the playoffs.
