Mathis?

Mathis played 17 minutes and didn't get to the FT line once. Can't imagine Pikiell loved that.

Mathis is very emotional, it is good and it is bad. He gives 110% 90% of the time. The other 10% usually happens after something bad has happened and it isn’t good.

I feel unbelievably confident that Pikiell is handling this correctly. I do think he did a poor job last year with Freeman.

well to be fair, Freeman was a senior, Mathis a freshmen, pretty tough to get Freeman to listen and buy in at that point. Hopefully Mathis does and stays the course

100%. It was a tough situation all around. Freeman was the captain and obviously not a captain player on the court. Who else could have it been?

For how good chemistry is this year it was that bad last year.

Mathis being a freshman and not a senior is even more of a reason that you take him out, talk to him, and send him back in. Mistakes will be made with freshman and should be used as teaching momentums rather than punishment.

Freeman as a senior should "know better" and there is more of a reason to just sit him if he's not listening to get the point across.

You also have to consider the moment and what is best for the team. You see Winston having his way with us out there over and over and have your best perimeter defender on the bench. Perfect time to go up to Mathis and challenge him to go back in and make up for it with lock down defense on Winston. Give him the challenge. Mathis seems like the type to step up to the plate. Could have changed the entire course of the game

Mathis shot a terrible 3 with RU down 42-40...those kind of shots likely put him on the bench
Eugene did as well. If he makes it , it stems the tide. Neither Mathis ‘s shot nor Eugene’s shot was a bad shot. Both were open and missed . Would I have preferred they drove to the hoop and attacked hopefully getting a foul? Yes.

Not so sure. He has been perplexed by what he has received this year , caught off guard by Issa’ s and Kiss ‘ failures to hit from three and contribute all around, and has properly brought his freshman along slowly. But once your freshman Mathis and Harper become starters or Myles playing starter minutes, you cannot forget them for 10-12 minutes. Bad decision to not let your freshman make an impact whether it was offensively or in Mathis’s case also defensively.

Omoruyi needs to do better than 4-13 from the floor, heck at least 3 or 4 of those were very makeable layups or put backs.

If he gets a few more of those close-in buckets, we hit 3 or 4 more FTs (we shot 9-17) and the refs don't blow a handful of obvious calls, well, hey you never know....:cool2:

I thought Eugene’s missed layups really hurt, as we could have extended Rutgers lead from 11 to 13 and to 15. At 15 , I think Michigan State would have stressed more, and forced more and got a little tighter , allowing us to withstand their run and still have a lead. The play of the game was their 5 possession rebounding extravaganza possession that ended with Mc Quaid hitting the three to tie it at 40. If they actually rebounded the ball and converted we go back up by 5 or 6 and stem the tide that was turning and we do not force things like we did after they tied it and went ahead by 2. The missing foul shots are really hurting as Caleb, Ron and Eugene , all reiiable foul shooters missed the 2nd shot after converting the first. 3 easy points. We only lost by 11. Every point missed from the line is hurting us now.

I might be wrong but it seems like many of Eugene’s misses are when he shoots with his left hand. I know he makes an occasional left handed shot but he seems to miss most of them, especially right at the rim.
