Mehringer needs to be replaced.

Coaching staff transitions are tough. But in his first full year, Durkin will have signed a solid first recruiting class, while he's working on a second solid recruiting class. And he'll lead his team to a bowl game following a 6-6 record.
And if he's 5-7 after starting off something like 5-2?

No doubt it's because the schedule was backloaded. But he won the games he was supposed to win to start the season and he got a few conference wins. But at this point, I have no doubt who had the better staff-building philosophy between Durkin and Ash. One went for experienced failed head coaches, the other went for wet-behind-the-ears whippersnappers.

He has one good win. MSU..every other decent team blew him out b

I tried to give him (D.M.) the benefit of the doubt in the beginning, new team, new facilities, new home, new everything, including him(27 yrs. old), but after you receive a gift on the 20 yd. line on the first play of the game, and the call is a REVERSE, pleazzzzz take a football coaching class buddy.
A fricking REVERSE! A reverse is ONLY used after you have set up the D for it. IT'S THE FIRST PLAY OF THE GAME! Wow, is all I can say.
Somebody mentioned XBox, that is an insult to all XBox players. That had to be one of the worst calls on Offense, for that situation I have ever seen, EVER!
Unbelievable, Ash has to really consider giving this guy his walking papers, or risk losing his own job. And, it's not just talent. Though an upgrade there would be helpful.

He's terrible. I'm sorry but Flood could've coached this team better than this. We literally have the worst offense I've seen in my entire life. How bad can Rettig be? You're telling me he can't throw for more than 40 yards a game?

As a Penn State fan I have seen my share of inept offenses but I never seen anything as bad as Rutgers offense. There is a lack of talent however the issues are much deeper then that. The offense lacks basic fundamentals. The footwork is terrible, blocking is terrible, route running is bad. On top of that you can't see any kind of game plan. Mehringer reminds me of Penn State former OC Donovan. They just seem call random plays to see what sticks. There no rhythm or reason to what they are doing. They are not building or setting things up.

Can't hire a 27 year old to run a B1G offense under a defensive head coach. Mehringer's ONLY playcalling experience was as a CO-OC at JMU for 1 year. And it shows.

Demote him and bring in a veteran.
A 60 year old OC with decades of experience and a track record of success couldn't construct an effective offensive system with QBs that can't throw, an OL that can't block, and WRs that can't get open.

Merrhinger has got to go as OC. Ash could also use a ex head Coach to help him overall ,and as OC. Merrhingher is too young and lacks experience at this level. The message others are being somewhat vague about and clearly some posters know the story coming to surface, Merrhingers age and his attempt at being "boys" with the players, instead of the Coach, has backfired ..
I guess we will soon see if Ash is mature and savy enough as a first time HC to understand hes got to reassign or dump Merhinger after LOI day. Its one thing to be 'loyal' and another to have a plan and act upon it and do whats best for program and your own sucess as a head coach at this level.

Sorry but you sound like our coaches. Excuses, excuses, excuses. On the bare minimum of playcalling, he's got to go. If you have a bad line, why the hell are you running a double reverse when you just got a turnover??? Why do you perpetually run up the gut on 3rd and 8??? Why do you play Tylin and not even give one glimpse that he could throw the ball??? Hell Navy even threatens the pass here and there. Some of this stuff would never be called by a D1 offensive coordinator, period.

You can't expect players to work miracles, and maybe they're just as frustrated by the idiotic playcalling as we are - yet, their coach who's barely older than they are, blames THEM at every post game conference.

Leaders make mistakes. Good ones learn from them and adjust. The OC is not good. We will see how good Ash is. He needs to make a change.

Honestly do you think we have more than 2 wins with their schedule...UCF and Purdue would not be gimmies...on the flipside they would get destroyed by UW.

If you are a Maryland fan you see improvement, do you see improvement for RU on the field? Maybe a little bit on the defense but the offense took so many steps back it is hard to notice.

This is our second year of young up and coming OC geniuses . Time will tell if these predictions are true. what is apparent, there still is a lot of on the job training . To be honest, if you're a proven OC , why would you take this job.

For the money.

Maybe we can lure Fridge out of retirement to work the booth during the games. Mentors DM, no need for him to travel for recruiting, and the months he works would be limited.

This is a bit tongue in cheek, but I'm assuming they will keep Mehringer through next season, perhaps the non traditional could work. Right now, just a mess, plain and simple.

Ash gives full control. Good OCs salivate at the idea of truly running their own offense. Plus, when you're ranked 128th in every single offensive category, you can only go up.

You jump into a role with extremely low expectations, pay increase, nice HC, and full control of offensive playcalling... for a B1G program. It's extremely appealing. If the guy finds success, he becomes a top head coaching candidate overnight.

If Chattanooga can score 3 points on Alabama, if Hawaii can score 3 points on Michigan, if Bowling Green can score 10 points on Ohio State, if UMass can score 7 points on Florida (and I can go on and on)...... don't tell me it's just talent...

26 scoreless quarters..........26!!!! that's 6 full games worth of play without a friggin point?!?!?!

that's coaching.............

Abro posted an amazing stat in another thread, that we've had 35 rushing TDs the past 2 seasons... but amazingly, only 1 TD this year.

That says it all. Even a Flood squad with same talent could produce rushing TDs vastly more than this year. Worst part is that this offense was supposed to be built on rushing...
