Men’s Lax: RU vs Maryland Game Thread

This is how Maryland typically wins games. They are just so well coached and execute so well.

Why they are the odds on favorite in my mind to win the national championship.

Or maybe don’t let them go on an 11-4 run and win some faceoffs. Wait, we haven’t that all year

Of course they count the goal.

We get fvcked so much at home it's crazy. Refs blow.

Maryland up 3 late 4th. They don't lose games like this.

That last Maryland goal was after the shot clock expired. sigh. under 5 left

Had the same feeling .... but hey, have to be happy with a 3 goal lead and RU winning face offs. No more Same Ole Rutgers tonight. Just like PU the streak ends tonight!!!!!
Really believed this would be RUs night ... RU was in it again in the 4th quarter and has lost to all ranked teams .. oh well, time to regroup and beat Michigan to guarantee a winning season ... good night, everyone.

We have gotten out-coached at half - and outplayed - almost every game this season. IT IS A PROBLEM whether some here want to admit it it not.

Yeah...you dont need to be a lax expert to notice that.

The kids are often lost out there.

Each of our recruiting classes are supposed to be better.

We have a little ways to go to get to that elite level that we need.

You see guys like Bernhardt and Fairman. When things breakdown and they are expected to physically make plays, they do. That's a such great thing to have.

Losing almost all faceoffs. Why?

^ Who are our underclassmen who can be big time playmakers and carry a team? Haven’t much of Coyne this year. Gallagher is good, but honestly he’s small.

How do coach against Mullins getting dinged in the 3rd?

They changed what they were doing on FO's, at half, and turned the game with it. With OSU beating Hopkins today we better hope they lose to Maryland next week and we better beat Michigan or we get completely embarrassed by not making the conference tourney on our own turf.

Maybe. Maryland's coach and staff (D coach is a former RU assistant) are arguably the best in the business. Our staff is very good. The best we have had.

Recruiting. We just need a few more game changers. We have some talent. But to beat elite teams, we need more.

As noted on the broadcast, one area where Maryland is ahead of a number of teams, including us, is their use of technology. We need more investment there.

I know you're the expert here, so I will defer to your judgment

what concerns me the most are the big picture items...well coached teams simply do not give up goals at the end of periods (as an example). those are things that need to be drilled into every kid.

maybe it's the new staff still taking time to gel, but what I have seen this year is a team that is not organized, not on the same page, and hurting itself way too often (eg. self inflicted wounds). those are red flags for me.

Well, RU had 2 NCAA champs in wrestling so beating UMD in lacrosse, MSU in BB, or PSU in football is only a matter of time.

“Each of our recruiting classes are supposed to be better” says every Rutgers fan in every sport every year after another disappointing season. Sad to not even be a bubble team in Year 8.

I can't speak for other sports. I do know the profile of kids on the team has gotten better and better.

Take a kid like Sprock. He's a freshman making plays. A kid we flipped from Virginia. That's a huge win. There are others. We just need more of them.

At the end of the day, talent typically wins out. Maryland has been stacking top 3 recruiting classes forever. You see it on the field.

If Rutgers doesn’t make the Big Ten Tournament at Highpoint and/or the NCAA tournament, is it time to replace Brian Brecht?

Yea, you'd like to see that not happen. One was just a player making a play after a weak slide by our defender. The other was a goal that shouldn't have counted. Lacrosse really needs instant reply. Goals are too valuable. We didn't lose because of it, but a team will at some point.

Between that goal and the other where the players toe was on the crease, we just never get those calls at home. Or on the road. It's unreal.

Hats off to Maryland. They are the best team in college lacrosse in my opinion. This is what they do to teams, and have for a long time.

Great staff, exceptional recruiting, and major investments from the school.

We've certainly closed the gap, but there is still more left to do.

Dumb, seriously dumb, comment. Gallagher is a amazing player.
Not really. He’s a fantastic player, but I don’t see him as a 1A guy who could carry a team. I don’t mean that as a diss. I’m just saying when I see teams like Loyola, Maryland, etc, they have bigger, more physical scorers who are tougher to cover

Sprock is very good...Beyond that, I'll refrain from what I'd like to say here tonight....really really disappointing right now on a number of fronts

Are you speaking about Spencer and Bernhardt?

Gallagher is a D1 starting attackman on almost any team. He needs others around him, no doubt. But he’s a player.

Ask an RU defenseman who the toughest cover in lacrosse is. They will tell you it’s Sowers, who is the same size as Gallagher.

Two year ago many were saying we got shafted by not making the NCAA. We supposedly were going to be better last year and this year so why are we still not making the NCAA. We seem to be stuck in a real rut or something. We just can't get over the hump.

Lol. Do you realize he is our third most productive offensive player? How exactly is he scoring if he is "too small" and easily covered? Sorry but I absolutely hate when people make judgements based wholly on physical dimensions, especially when those judgements fly in the face of reality.

0-7 vs. Maryland since joining the B1G. I know they're the better program but you have to figure out a way to get a win against them at some point, don't you? It's getting old losing this way.

Now we become big Maryland fans. If they stub their toe in Columbus next week, Rutgers is going to be in serious jeopardy of watching from the stands the first weekend in May.
