Men’s Lax: RU vs Maryland Game Thread

Yes, recruiting has improved compared to Stags or Brecht’s first couple of classes but RU is falling behind the rest of the B1G. OK, people can argue the science of rankings, but Inside Lacrosse ranks RU ‘s class of 2019 as tied at #30 while the other B1G programs are all in the Top 10 except UMich tied at #18.

Big 4 all have a 5-star in the class. Four-star recruits —

MD - 11
JHU - 7
PSU- 6
OSU - 6
UMich - 4
RU - 1

Good point about the schedule getting more challenging, but there’s no sugar-coating that there were bad losses this year. Or that the talent deficit is widening.

We’re getting out-recruited by Michigan...yikes...and essentially destroyed by the other 4. Kind of hard to make positives out of this unfortunately.

This is why you CAN NOT lose to Army and freakin’ Lehigh. EVER.

You mean you can not lose to #17 Army while missing Edelman, Mullins and Harryman?

BTW, High Point is currently ranked ahead of Notre Dame, Denver and Towson.

You need to take a closer look.

So what’s the excuse for losing to Army last year? And we should be happy that High Point - HIGH POINT - has come out of nowhere to be a better program than us? Stop.

Army is good. I would not discredit them. Can’t lose back to back years against them though. Someone step up and make a play. Blown leads against Lehigh, Cuse, and Maryland can’t happen. That’s too many. The point is, we can complain about being left out of the tournament, but the fact is we continue to stub our toe.

I could see OSU getting in the tournament this year and not getting making the B1G tourney.

Given their relatively weak SOS that's a bit of a surprise. Denver will play to win their conference tournament this year, so they could move ahead, but I don't see how Cornell can win the Ivy this year and push Penn or Yale into an at-large.

And the ACC has 4 once again. It also makes the OSU - Maryland game a key test. The loser will be on the bubble. And Penn shows what happens when you catch fire after some early season woes.

I realize that I'm a homer, but I don't think one loss to a top ten team is going to drive the #2 team in the nation to bubble status...

Rutgers no longer has to worry about RPI this year because now there is only one way for this team to get to the NCAA Tournament and that is to get into and win the Big Ten Tournament

Still a slim chance without winning tournament We are 20. Beat Michigan and No. 1 Penn State and either Penn State or Maryland in first round, might get us in. Long shot, I know.

That's a legit path in my opinion, now that you mention it. And your team is going to be in both those games with a chance to win, based on what I've seen. Those two wins would help A LOT!

I think you'd end up with Penn State twice, but from what I saw, your team can play with anybody in the B1G including both Penn State and Maryland...

How can anyone even think of being overconfident against anyone? Life and death struggle with St. John's, hung on for dear life to beat Princeton, got smoked out of the gate against a mediocre Hopkins team, etc.

I'm sure Michigan sees Rutgers as a chance to snap a long skid and pick up a Big Ten win

Princeton? We only beat Fairfield 8-4. Granted, lots of guys out injured IIRC, but no excuse for that IMHO.

Lots of guys injured. You mean Edelman, Mullins, Harryman (and #2 FOGO Ott) and Christiano? I think AC was nicked up as well, but played. And you're quibbling about the margin of victory? Hey, it's been a disappointing season but this is getting ridiculous.

Drexel just beat them 21-9. I would like to THINK that our roster should beat them, without those guys, handily. We did not, so yeah, I'm going to "quibble" and will do so until I see fit to do otherwise because there's just be tooooooo much "wtf" this season. Sorry buddy. Listen, you know me, I tell it like it is, regardless of sport, always have an always will. Now...HOPEFULLY....we go out there and play a full game again, LIKE we did against OSU, this Saturday.

Yes, there are no credible excuses for this season thus far.

I will merely respond by saying that in today's D1 lacrosse, particularly early in the season, if you are missing that many top players and you go against a healthy team nothing is guaranteed. You think Maryland would have won last week if they were missing Jared Bernhardt? Add 3 more top players to that and it becomes obvious. That's also telling it like it is.

We’re taking about FAIRFIELD, not Maryland, who got PUMMELED by Drexel for crying out loud lol!

Com’on man!

Of course they do. They have some players who think they can beat anyone.

Like every B1G team.

Cali is gonna kill me but I have ZERO confidence in us “counting” Michigan as an automatic W. We lost to Lehigh at home folks.
I’m not going to kill you. It’s D1 B1G Lacrosse. No team is counting anything. You better go out and earn it.

That would be a lock.

Md is right. It’s getting crazy here.

Stranger things have happened, but all I can think about is the complete egg RU laid at State Penn two years ago. That was a better RU team than this one and this State Penn team is better than their 2017 squad.
Hard to have much faith they're going to go in there on State Penn's senior day and win.

Michigan will give us everything we can handle...they play hard, have talent, and will grind to the end...they have massive FO issues due to injury...have used a pole most games or a high % of the time...so that should help...but the have a very effective 10 man ride that's given some teams fits...might be a fun twist to keep an eye on...

I hope the guys can get a win for the seniors on Senior Day...

Hopefully for the fans going to the game, it's a nice day and you get to see a win...

Go RU

I bet we look at employing a 10 man ride next year. In can be very effective creating helter skelter.

Can someone explain this to us semi-novices? Thx!

It’s essentially a full court press. In this case, your goalie is required to come out and guard. It takes having a goalie who can move in the open field. It’s playing 10 on 10 when the other team is trying to clear, as opposed to keeping your goalie in and playing. 9-10.

It’s risky. It leaves the goal open. We will see it today. Do t be surprised if you see denfensemen taking shots at the open goal from our defensive side.

If I was a coach and had the athleticism to do this, I’d do it all day.

Agree.

So I was at Georgetown NJIT game, did not get to see game. Did MI employ full court press today and how did we handle it?
