14 team, 54 hole event at Sea Island Resort's 7,060 yard, Par 72 Plantation Course. Rutgers will face a strong field that includes #16 Illinois, #19 Texas, #41 Notre Dame and #46 UNCG. Besides Rutgers and the Illini, B1G squads from Mich St, Minnesota, PSU, and Nebraska will compete along with 2023 Johnnie -O Champ, Kansas St.

Rutgers, who is ranked 8th out of 14 in the field, will send out the 4 who have played just about every match for the past 2 years in Xavier Marcoux, Luke Wells, Rhett Sellers, and Weston Jones. Frosh Derek Gutierrez will assume the 5th spot. For the 1st time in '23-'24 Rutgers is bringing the entire team as Martin Leon, Logan Paczewski, and Andrew Reyes will compete as individuals. Pairings have not yet been announced.

In the latest D1 Golf rankings Rutgers moved up 5 spots to #82. The last At Large bid for the NCAA's usually goes to a team ranked in the mid 60's. Like basketball and baseball, the number of At Large bids depend on conference championship outcomes. Since the new year Rutgers has see-sawed back and forth between #72 and #87, unable to post 2 good results back to back. With only 3 tourneys counting this remaining, they need pile up impressive finishes to have hope.

BIG10 Rankings as of 3/6 with RU record against the team when playing in the same event.

March 9th was yesterday. The tourney starts tomorrow. Last year there was a limited 3 team tourney comprised of RU, PSU, and Minny the day before but I haven't seen anything mentioned this year.

I wondered what happened with Kumar. He had a few nice results last season in this and if I remember the B1G matchplay. He has/had a year of eligibility remaining. As far as I can tell he didn't transfer and played in Am tourneys over the summer so an injury doesn't seem likely.

Pairings are out. Rutgers is paired with #16 Illinois, #19 Texas, and Michigan St. In the shotgun start, they go off the 1st Tee at 8:45 with the same pairing in the 2nd Round which will follow immediately.

There is also a second individual tourney at the same time at a different course within the resort. 9 teams playing the Johnnie-O also have players in that along with Ohio State amd Liberty. Rutgers, Mich St, Minn, Kansas, and Augusta are not entered. With Rutgers the entire roster is playing where the team competition is being held.

In the First Round this morning, Things didn't go all that well for the team with a score of 2 Over 290 leaving them in 9th Place. Weston Jones continued his positive play with a 1 Under 71. He was followed by Xavier Marcoux coming in at Even Par, Frosh Derek Gutierrez was at 1 Over, Rhett Sellers 2 Over and Luke Wells 5 Over. Playing as individuals, Martin Leon and Frosh Andrew Reyes shot Even Par 72's and Logan Paczewski shot 76.

The 2nd Round was a much better story as the team shot a 6 Under 282, the 4th best Round of the 14 teams. The team climbed from 9th to a tie for 7th. Rutgers was led by Rhett Sellers 4 Under 68. He was followed by Xavier Marcoux shooting a 2 Under 70. They are tied for 15th individually. Luke Wells (T63) and Derek Gutierrez (T29) shot Even Par. Weston Jones, also tied for 29th, shot 1 Over. Individuals Logan Paczewski (T73) shot 73, Martin Leon and Andrew Reyes are T63 after both shot 77.

Pairings have not been posted for tomorrow's final. There's a good chance RU will be paired with at least 2 of Illinois for the 3rd round in a row, UNCG, and Nebraska.

EDIT: They're not going with the 4 team groups shotgun start. Instead half the Field will go off #1 and half #10. Rutgers will start on #10, playing with just Nebraska and Minnesota.

6. #16 Illinois.....................-6

Todays Final Round saw a battle for 4th thru 8th with teams changing spots thruout the day. #84 Augusta made a huge jump from 11th, passing 6 teams in doing so. Cincy followed, passing 4. Rutgers shot a team 3 Under 285 to finish where they started in 7th Place.

Rutgers was led by Weston Jones, shooting a 3 Under 69. Jones finished T19. Luke Wells (T46) shot -1. Both Jones and Wells scored Eagles. Jones on the 365 yard Par 4, 15th. Wells got his on his last hole, a 481 yard Par 4. Rhett Sellers (T19) shot Even Par, Xavier Marcoux (T26) shot 73 and Derek Gutierrez (T43) a 74. Playing as individuals Martin Leon (T46) shot a 1 Under 71, Logan paczewski (T63) an Even Par 72, and Andrew Reyes (T67) a 76.

While 7th is a respectable result, it likely won't to help the team ranking much when they're updated tomorrow. With only two events left, The Tiger Collegiate at the U of Missouri April 8-9 and the B1G Championship at the end of April, time is about to run out for a possible NCAA bid.

Final Top 7

1. #41 Notre Dame........-32

4. #46 UNCG..................-11
5. #84 Augusta..............-10
6. #72 Cincinnati............-8

Other B1G Teams Entered

8. #16 Illinois...................-4
9. #114 Nebraska............-2
11. #84 Minnesota...........E
T13. #132 Penn St............+10

So the 7th Place ahead of then #16 Illinois didn't help at all. In fact, RU dropped 2 places to #84 and 8th in the B1G. Conversely, Michigan State blew past RU and UMich, jumping from 95th to 75th by finishing 3rd. Head to head RU is 3-1 vs MSU and just beat them a week ago but the Johnnie O had such a strong field that 3rd was worth a lot more rankings points than the Colleton. Of course there's also the effect of how all the other D1 teams that played this past week fared.

Illinois dropped 5 spots to #21, Texas dropped 1 to #20. Notre Dame improved 13 spots to #28 by winning the event.
