Michigan's signing with the stars

With that stunt Harbaugh pulled off, expect other schools to outdo one another to make their NSD the best. Think dancers, more celebs, musical acts, bussing in hundreds of people, etc. I would expect the NCAA to put a kibosh on this quickly before NSD really gets out of control.
Rumor has it that Louisville is already lining up prostitutes for next year. As long as Pitino is the one making the arrangements, Louisville will skate with the NCAA.

Can you imagine if Springsteen,Bon Jovi, and Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes did a benefit concert at the new Meadowlands Stadium for Rutgers Athletics. Not only would it raise a bunch of money, but think of all the media attention.
Springsteen is a BCU parent. Bon Jovi is a Golden Domer fanboi. Southside Johnny probably couldn't find Rutgers with a GPS.

Bon Jovi would do it for Notre Dame. Not Rutgers.

The point is that Michigan alums, fans, etc. have tremendous pride and, by and large, love the school. I see it all the time, all over the country. So, of course they're going to say something like that. I'm sure many Ohio State people feel the same way about their school. Calling your school the "best" is essentially just a way of saying you love the place and rallying the like-minded. It certainly beats self-loathing and negativity.
So do we....

Forget the ivies.

Johns Hopkins is number one in research spending. Michigan is second. Michigan educates a lot more people than does any single ivy. There are reasons for the Wolverines to have pride.
Johns Hopkins is a great university and Michigan is a great public university.

Neither compare to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, or Cal Tech in terms of the prestige of their faculty, although Hopkins is close. Michigan is not.

And, the number of people educated by a university has nothing to do with its prestige.

UM is a fine school, but their grads have a very inflated view of where they stand in the world.

Hopkins's Medical School is consider the best followed by Harvard. But Harvard is better over all of course.

You have Urban laughing derisively when someone asks him in a press conference if he'd ever climb a try to get a recruit. Next time he's asked maybe he'll respond that his championship rings make it really difficult to grab those limbs.
Yes, the other side of the sword is unless Harbaugh consistently beats OSU all the Michigan fans that love him today will not be satisfied with "He beats everybody else."

Jeez. I'm happy to say I haven't the first effing clue what any of you are talking about. Sometimes I'm really glad I don't watch much TV.

Most ratings put Harvard at the top, Stanford 2nd, and Hopkins 3rd. But you never know what they are looking at and what they mean by best. You want the most buzz when you say where you studied, you say Harvard, however, Hopkins is the monster when it comes to pulling in research bucks.

Right now my primary job at my university is to help the uni get the highest possible score on the every-six-year evaluation of all faculty in New Zealand. You get points basically for how good your CV looks in terms of research. And then the uni gets bucks for how many A researchers, B researchers, etc. And then they divide through by a measure of how many faculty you have. But there really is no way to determine with precision how many faculty you have as there are so many different kinds of job titles and responsibilities. (E.g., we have a med school as does Auckland, but none of the other uni's do. How do we classify surgeons who also do a bit of research, but mostly teach surgery).

So, this little story leads to this punchline: I've concluded that there is no fair way to compare university quality as they are very different to one another. So, to me, broader categories is better, and I'd put Harvard, Stanford, Hopkins, and those two English universities whose name I forget all in the top five.

A lot of NJ recruits don't do as well as they are rated. Michigan brought in 2 Linebackers and DE, all 4 star recruits, about 10 years ago. None actually made the team and Michigan took 5-7 years before they took a gamble on NJ recruits. Ohio State only cherry picks recruits from NJ. A lot of the NJ recruits at Michigan will be sorry.

So after the stars leave reality sets in.

Late January, Michigan Freshman Brian Cole, the number one ranked recruit in Michigan for 2015 was removed from the Wolverines football program. Rumor has it that Cole cannot lay-off the MaryJane, and that he failed multiple drug tests. Rumor also has it that the decision to boot Cole from the team was based on a team vote (again, just rumors here in Michigan).

But because of his talent, other schools were apparently still interested in Cole.... Kentucky, Pitt, Arizona, and Arizona State have been mentioned as possibilities.

And sure enough... the SEC takes him.http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2016/02/report_brian_cole_will_transfe.html

I wonder if the ganja is any good in Kentucky? jk

Good luck to the kid... I hope he can remain clean.

GO BLUE!

In world rankings, Michigan is top 20. Do you really want to talk smack?

Some of you took the one posters comment about "Michigan does the 2nd most research dollar wise", and turned it into a pissing contest of who has the most prestige. I mean cmon.

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandr...of-michigan-ann-arbor-170976/overall-rankings

Michigan ranks top 5/10 in pretty much every topic covered. It is pretty sad the insecure individuals who think they can tear that down as their egos are bruised. Salute to those Rutgers fans calling out the PSU wanna be fans. The malcontents would fit right in on BWI.

It's not "smack". It's an observation, based on knowing quite a few grads.
