McCabe - exceeding expectations - did not expect him to start - give him a solid B

DelVecchio - some big wins - except for Cliff Keane lost to Norsteen & Iowa having good season - give him a B plus

Ashnault - a good year without exceeding expectations - give Ash a B

Theobold. - except for loss to Nebraska kid at Cliff Keene having season that exceeds expectations - give him an A minus

Perrotti - way below expectations - has disappointed - give him a D

Gravina - ok season for redshirt frosh who has been injured - nothing special - give him a C

Bakuckas - a fighter verus tough opponents - needs big victory to exceed expectations - give him a B

Hrymack & Pafumi - guys try - maybe overmatched - give them a C minus

Campolattano - to early to evaluate - give him an incomplete

Smith - has injury set him back ? - needs to beat a top guy - give him a C minus as he had a strong start before injury

What do others think such as our insiders WNG and Josh ?

McCabe - exceeding expectations - did not expect him to start - give him a solid B. Meeting my expectations. Penciled him as the starting 125lber from the get go, as no one else has really proved they can beat him out. Agree with the "B".

DelVecchio - some big wins - except for Cliff Keane lost to Norsteen & Iowa having good season - give him a B plus. Coming off a really nice win over Alexander and did a good job of make the Richards match respectable after it looked like it could be ugly. I think he can improve, so I'll go with "B".

Ashnault - a good year without exceeding expectations - give Ash a B. If it weren't for that loss to Rodriguez, he'd be an easy "A" for me. He's looked like the recruit we expected him to be so far. I'll give him a "B+". Has to work on his mat wrestling.

Theobold. - except for loss to Nebraska kid at Cliff Keene having season that exceeds expectations - give him an A minus. I think Theo is capable of a lot more than he has shown us so far, which is saying something, as he is having a solid season. I'll give him a "B+", only because I think he can take it to another level. I'm a Theo believer. Just has to tighten up some of his technique., He can get a bit careless sometimes. But he is fun to watch.

Perrotti - way below expectations - has disappointed - give him a D. Agree with the "D". I know he didn't have a great record last year before making his run to AA, but he has been in some sort of funk this year.

Gravina - ok season for redshirt frosh who has been injured - nothing special - give him a C. Shoulder injuries can be killers and he doesn't have the physical strength to be an everyday Big Ten starter, at this point in time. I'll go with 'B minus"since he is a bit over matched.

Bakuckas - a fighter verus tough opponents - needs big victory to exceed expectations - give him a B. Phil needs to start beating some of these kids he's not supposed to. He keeps matches close, but he doesn't have that marquee win yet. I think he'll get it eventually. I'll give him a "B minus"

Hrymack & Pafumi - guys try - maybe overmatched - give them a C minus. Ditto.

Campolattano - to early to evaluate - give him an incomplete. Not to soon for me to give him a big fat F, as I see no indication he will turn it around. I know its early, but in all seriousness, what has he shown us to think otherwise? But, I'll stick it out a lil while longer and hope for the best and give him a "D" since its still early.

Smith - has injury set him back ? - needs to beat a top guy - give him a C minus as he had a strong start before injury. He's due for a good performance. Agree with the "C minus"

I agree with most of the grades. McCabe is a B-, Delvecchio a B+, Ash an A-, Theo a B+, Perrotti a C, Gravina a C, Phil B a B- since he is in such a tough weight, Hayden and Parfumi a C-, Camp a D and Smitty a C for same reasons as Phil. Smitty was scoped and lost 3 valuable weeks so keep that in mind. If he had not that setback I think his results would have been better.

McCabe - A-

DelVecchio - A-

Ashnault - A

Theobold. - A

Perrotti - C

Gravina - C

Bakuckas - B

Hrymack & Pafumi - C-

Campolattano - D

Smith - D

McCabe- B

DelVecchio- A

Ashnault- A-

Theobold- A

Perrotti- D

Gravina- C

Bakukuckas- B+

Hrymack & Pafumi- C

Campolattano- D-

Smith- C-

Here is mine

McCabe B. I think he is better then expected
Delv. B+ W. h his win at Maryland Big win for him
Ash. A. Could be better with his only hicup Rodriguez
Theo A. Keep knocking off ranked guys
Perot. C. Same thing as last year. Did anyone think he was going to go threw the big 10 like that
Bakuk. C. I agree he is tough. But like everyone he neess to score MORE. Tough wieght
Smith C. I hear ya Wng about yhe knee but he hasnt had any wins against ranked guys yet or last season. I dont count the guys that are 18-19-20 For as many chances he has had it scares me. He doesnt score enogh to live in B1G and his season will show come march
i think it will be very hard to qualify for Nationals for Camp and Smith. jmo Hope im wrong

PS. Those close matches against guys who are unranked kill us. Bonus points wins in Big 10. And we just dont seem to get any.

I prefer to have Intermat do the grading. As of this morning, we have a Top 5 wrestler, we have two wrestlers who broke into the rankings this week, and another ranked wrestler who is more than holding his own against top competition. We also have two ranked upperclassmen who are slowly fading out. The last two need to turn it around quickly if we want to have a very successful season. $$$$

For everybody harshly grading Perrotti, I ask this:

Sure, Perrotti grabbed an AA spot upsetting some top 5-15 talent in the NCAAs last year. Great run through the tournament that won't be forgotten. But did those results set up some way too high expectations? This is a guy who barely made it out of EIWAs, if I remember correctly. And we're going up against B1G talent everyday now as opposed to the Drexel's of the world, with a Lehigh/Cornell every so often.

Do you really think Perrotti has regressed (basing it on the fact that he AA'd)? Or do you think he's where he is, and is just struggling now that we're facing real competition? How many of the matches do you think he should have won that he lost?

I'm hoping he turns it around and gets to make another run in the tournament. It's interesting to really see who's a top wrestler now that we're in the top conference and who develops or regresses over the course of the season.

When AP is not hurt and wrestling he if fine. Lost to #2 Green 11-6 at Vegas. He is Ok and will bang some kids

i am a softy and unless the guys aren't going to class or practice or listening to coaches it looks like all A's to me. the effort is on the mat. you can and should always want better results but they are in the midst of the toughest season in the history of the program and i see 6 guys ranked in the Intermat top 20. that is awesome.

also Perrotti was not in the top 20 last year leading up to the tournament. in the final coaches poll of the year he wasn't even in the top 33. he's come a long way and i am not down on him. i think he could put together another nice run and all these tough matches will only help him prepare for the B1G tourney and beyond.

Ashnault, DelVecchio, Theobold and Bakuckas have all exceeded my expectations thus far. Smith, Camp and Perrotti are maybe a step back from where they could be but not alarmingly so at all. 125, 165 and 184 have been less solid altho i will say McCabe shows some serious grit out there.

I'd like to see what odds you guys (I'm NOT a wrestling expert, that's for sure, lol...) would give for each weight, to bring home an AA title, as of today.

I will take a crack

125- 15%
133- 30%
141- 85%
149- 75% as of right now.
157- 40% as we all know. Its possible
165- 10%
174- 50% tough weight.
184- 10%
197- 10% next year for camp
Hwt- 30% would be better but you said as of now. He isnt on his game right now.

I agree with most of the grades. I ll give camp an incomplete. He has had a run of top wrestlers. I d like to see him wrestle a few few mediocre guys to see if he can get his confidence going. Smith has to get offensive. He s light for a heavyweight but he tries to wrestle like a big one with tie ups and shoving matches. Fire off some shots!!!! His aggression is way way to low. Bakukus is very strong and wrestling well defensively.... But he also needs to start taking some shots. BE AGGRESSIVE!!!!

This is a tough exercise for me. I'm disappointed in Camp, Smith and Perrotti, but if they peak at tournament time, none of this will matter at all in anyone's minds. I continue to feel like its all good.

that means we should expect between 3 and 4 all americans this year. i'll take it but i think your glasses are slightly rosier than mine!

i'd say Ash has the best shot but would still put it at 50%. Freshman AA's are rare. there are only a handful a year. Perrotti and Smith have about a maybe a 25% shot. Both round of 16 talent and then they need to win two more 50/50 bouts to make it past the blood round. Perrotti's odds of AA going into last year's EIWA's would have been less than 1% btw. Theobold and DelVecchio are long shots, 1/50 or less. 65 and 84 have less than a 10% shot of making the tournament and a 0% shot at AA. McCabe's chances are slightly higher. Camp i have no idea. he's AA talent but i'm not accepting wagers until after the B1G tourney.

that would be if i were placing bets. i'm certainly hoping to exceed those expectations and i have faith in the guys that they can do it. i will be watching that is for sure.

forgot Bakucas. the weight class is crazy tough and loaded with seniors. he'll have to catch a few breaks. maybe 5%. next year could be a totally different story.

Odds of AA by weight for this year:

125- 0%
133- 10%
141- 50%
149- 30%
157- 10%
165- 0%
174- 0%
184- 0%
197- 0%
Hwt- 10%

Phila Phans in my opinion is right on and realistic!
The boys are working extremely hard with improvement very evident.
Look at the Maryland match, a team and organization with facilities and money!
Read in the paper this am about Rutgers $1B fund raising goal meet. In the same article Football-Basketball-Lacrosse have increased their fund raising efforts?
Has not wrestling filled the Rac 3 times with a much less operating budget? I hope time has come that someone or some company will want to be the name of Rutgers Wrestling! New Jersey fans and wrestlers deserve it!
Great things are happening in the room.
Moving up!!!!!

Moving Up

We are trying to raise money, about $75,000 to bring in world class wrestlers to our SKWC so they can train with our kids to get them better. A bunch of us and the coaching staff are actively pursuing that objective. Let you know when we hit it. Right now any of you can contribute any amount, $1 to ? for the pin pool. All that money goes toward the objectives of paying coaches, taking kids to national events to wrestle, etc.

To get in the pin pool here you go. I joined for the first time this year, would love to see this get to $1,000 a pin.

Pin Pool

Great to see recent grads such as Alex Caruso and DJ Russo joined the Pin Pool. Way to give back !

Regarding the pin pool, can somebody give me a rough idea how many pins the team has had the past few years (I'll be sure to up it for this year!), I just want to get an idea how much I can afford to pledge. I clicked on the link and it looks like there have been 50 pins so far this season. Thanks

From what I can see it looks like the past 2 years had 35 each year, so this year is much higher (started the season against 3 D3 teams). I can only guess with the schedule going forward there will only be a handful more this year.

2012 - 13 35 pins @ $265.00 per pin
2013 - 14 35 pins @ $411.50 per pin
2014 - 15 50 pins (and counting) @ $682.00 (and counting) per pin

Really nice job by the powers that be with getting the word out.
