Miles is out

No we’re not. What we won’t stand for is being piss poor or mediocre. Nobody expects elite out of the program but we will spend until we find the right people to finish in the top half of the conference on an annual basis.

I would expect more coaches being fired for some other sports(Spring sports) unless things change quickly.
Softball, baseball and track are not cutting it.

Sometimes Rutgers fans don't understand that you can have aspirations to reach higher and do better. Because it's possible. At a school like Nebraska more than some others.

Nebraska pumped a ton of money into their facilities so they expect NCAA tournaments.

Do you know what has brought this new focus on basketball? It's not as though Nebraska has ever consistently finished in the top half of their conference. In the last 30 years, it's happened just 8 times, and just once in consecutive years (1992-94 finished 4th in the Big 8). Have to go back to the early 80s to find Nebraska consistently in the top half of their conference.

As did Arkansas , A&M , UCLA etc.

At the Power 5 conference level no NCAA in 5 years usually spells doom for the HC and in many cases that isn't enough in the world of today.

No he wasn't fired because of that. However, without all those injuries they would have had a much better year. Miles is not a bad coach and
did an amazing job with the healthy players that he was left with. I really don't understand why he was fired.
He was not fired based on the 2018-19 season alone.
Good list, but I hope you don't go the scumbag route with Kelvin Sampson.
He is not a scumbag. Also, more likely to be offered Arkansas than Houston.
Seems like a great guy. Pikiell appeared to like him as well.
Tim is a good guy, Coaches tend to like Coaches they think, or can, can beat.

Coors Light? Off with his head!

The facts suggest otherwise. The NCAA punishes virtually no one, yet they banned Sampson from coaching for 5 years because of recruiting violations.

Sampson's violations were making impermissible phone calls to recruit. I'm sure Sampson was aware he was breaking the rules but: 1) those calls are no longer NCAA violations and 2) on the scale of bad behavior not nearly as corrupt as payoffs, grade fixing, escorts, etc. 3) As Russ states, he can flat out coach. He's won everywhere including High School and low mid majors while he was climbing the ladder and had zero resources/benefits to offer players.

When Tom Osborne was made the AD he decided that NU was going to emphasize all sports, not just football. They put a plan together with the City of Lincoln to develop the entire area West of the main campus including the arena. With the arena being built NU converted the old one for volleyball which increased their abilities and also attached a hoops and wrestling facility to the outside of it. The makeover has continued with an entire new soccer complex(only have women’s) a new indoor and outdoor tennis facilities,a hockey arena for the club hockey team(seats 2700 I think) with training facilities and currently building a gymnastics only arena and practice facility. They have partnered with the 4 private golf courses they use to upgrade the courses and clubhouses. It’s my understanding that all new indoor and outdoor track facilities are due to kick off and that football gets the old space and is having entire new training and treatment facilities put in as well as a $300mil stadium upgrade. The bowling team is get a facelift on their lanes and I believe the rifle teams locker room is getting redone. It isn’t just hoops NU is revamping it is every sport. This had gotten stale there and they are gonna chain it. The previous chancellor didn’t like to spend on facilities so they fired him and got one that likes to use the resources provided.

I mean, I get wanting to improve all sports - and Osborne was made AD 12 years ago (we're two ADs past him at this point) - not sure where the expectation came from that they'd be a perennial top-half Big Ten team, though. Is that from the fans, or is that just an aspirational goal from the athletic department?

Wonder what all those facilities that Husker mentioned would cost in New Jersey---$600 million / $700 million ?

sorry he did this twice, the 2nd time he did he already knew that he wasnt suppose to. He is a bad guy and wouldnt trust that everything he is doing at Houston is on the up and up considering a skyrocketing rise..remember Eddie Jordans team beat Houston at the RAC in a blowout

His violations were phone calls, about 550 of them that he and his staff made. Yes, he got a 5-year show cause penalty. If you are Sean Wood and you, allegedly, put your hands on your players then you've earned scumbag title. If you're Pat Summit's son and you have sex with your starting point guard, while being a married man, you definitely are a scumbag. A bunch of impermissible phone calls = scumbag? Wow, that is a very low bar.

May have to call every coach a scumbag if that is the criteria.

The expectations comes from the fans and the people running the university. Mainly football but athletics in general is considered the front porch of the University as a whole. They are what can easily catch potential students attention whether they are athletic or not. I know you folks know that successful athletics=increased applications and enrollment. NU’s athletic department has plenty of money so they are going to repaint the athletics department and move ahead. That’s what the people of Nebraska and donors want. We will pay for new shiny toys and coaches buyouts until we get it right. Ha

I hear you. But, call me a cynic -- I don't think he would have gotten 5 years, unless there was more to it than what was publicly disclosed.

Sorry Sampson is scum and corrupt
He's so scummy and corrupt that the rule he broke no longer exists because the NCAA realized how dumb, and difficult to police it, it was.

His show cause penalty was for lying to the NCAA. I don't know why Coaches think they'll get away with that. They never ask a question that they don't already know the answer too.

It was phone calls, he didn't throw basketballs at kids and so forth, tell the NCAA the truth, take the wrist slap and keep it moving. Oh and don't do it again.

OK, so Husker says $600 million in Nebraska dollars. What the heck, I am just rounding that off to $1.5 Billion in New Jersey dollars.

Husker, anyone good recruits coming in or now possibly not coming in because of the Miles dismissal?

Sophomore gaurd Thomas Allen has put his name in the transfer portal but said he won’t have a final decision until after speaking with the new coach whenever they get hired.
I would say he is 95% out the door....

He did it 2x

Rules are rules
Yes, he did it twice. But scumbag? "Cheater" seems more accurate. At what level does "scumbag" begin? I'm curious because "scumbag" seems like a visceral reaction.
Is it impermissible calls?
Is it throwing a basketball at a player?
Is it cursing at a player?
Is it calling a player a Rock Head?

I just want to know where scumbag starts so that if I decide to use it on this board, I'll be using it appropriately. Also, just so I understand, which Coach is the bigger scumbag:

Coach A: Broke rules that the NCAA decided were so dumb that they eliminated them
Coach B: Did something so shady that the NCAA decided to create a rule to keep any other Coach from doing the same thing

Wait, did a Kelvin Sampson coached team beat Rutgers by a lot to a little?

Bac2theRac will call Kelvin Sampson a scumbag for making phone calls but loves the President who cheats on his pregnant wife with a porn star and makes vulgar comments about grabbing women.

Come on now, no politics please.

That's normally my rule as well. But, I could not resist with BAC. But, that's it for me.

Back to the OP....Miles seems like an good recruiter because Nebraska had some players. I know several we're transfer back he got to the Lincoln, NE.

Miles was a good dude but just wasn’t performing well enough with the recent investments made in the program.($290mil).

Hot board targets appear to be:

Fred Hoiberg. UCLA, Alabama also pursuing. He is a Lincoln native so maybe that will help
Chris Jans. New Mexico State
Kelvin Sampson. Houston
Nate Oats. Buffalo
Craig Smith. Utah St. former NU assistant.
Tyron Lue. Former NU player.
Steve Forbes. East Tennessee St.

None of the Hurley’s? That would be a worst case scenario ;)

I wonder, at this point, how much the Hurley name, both nationally and in New Jersey, means to high school kids who are 15,16,17 years-old. The Dad was a very successful coach at a school that no longer exists. If one of his kids does not at least get to a Final Four very soon, does the name carry any importance to the high schoolers?

The relationships they've made with other coaches/trainers are still in tact.

I see your point. Maybe it's just the former prosecutor in me. When a guy gets caught breaking the same rule twice and then lies about, I suspect it is just the tip of the iceberg of his unlawful behavior.

He's had zero problems since and he's probably a better Coach than half of the schools have.
