Montclair State vs RU

I wonder if Rowan draws students from north Jersey who don't want a big college, can't afford a private college, and don't want to attend college along with their high school classmates. I wonder if Rowan has that kind of name recognition in the north.

A Co worker who lives in Union County said his kids were interested in Rowan.

one part of Rutgers-Camden's problems is that kids like that think Rowan rather than Rutgers-Camden. Can't blame them: Rowan has much more visiblity; is in a location that is more attractive to suburban kids than Rutgers-Camden (no point being there if you don't care about ready access to Philadelphia) and has an engineering program, which R-C does not.(R-C only has a pre-engineering program for kids who want to finish at New Brunswick.) And I should add that there is nothing attractive about putting down "Camden" on your resume.

My gut tells me that more Rowan students stick around on weekends as well and there is more of a typical college culture- especially as more kids from outside of South Jersey go there.

You're probably right; but I don't know now that Rutgers-Camden has dorms. OTOH, the dorms for undergraduates are far from full. And I really don't know how advanced the Rowan dorm system is.

Camden,
I have been hearing that more students from around the state are interested in the Camden campus which should mean filling the dorms won't be a problem. Also, with the new huge nursing program building set to open by Fall, I expect a large increase in girls attending Camden. Once the guys hear about this female/male ratio, an increase in male enrollees should follow quickly. LOL

Heaven, I haven't heard those things, but they are good news. My impression is that the campus can certainly accommodate more undergrads. (and the law school can accommodate more law students too!)

I think the nursing building will be open by next Fall at the latest. I think the next step will be to construct a building for the Business School (graduate and undergraduate). The building like the nursing school, will be along the corridor that connects Rutgers-Camden with Cooper Hospital/Medical School. Still, it will be a long time before that corridor is filled in.

CamdenLaw,
Does Rutgers Law send in staff to the high schools to speak with political science/history classes, college fairs, legal clubs, etc. to reach out to students at an early age to let them know about what Rutgers Law School has to offer ? Do high schools bring student groups to campus to attend law classes or presentations ? Maybe even have Law School Days--introduction about what Rutgers has to offer, campus tour, lunch, speak with professors and students, general sessions about the different types of law careers? Just a thought.

Not bad thoughts. I think we focus our efforts on undergraduate students, since students don't directly enter law school from high school, but rather earn baculaureate degrees first (with minor exceptions). And I think we focus on RU students. We need to do more along these lines. But since Newark-Law and Camden-Law are one institution, it is hard to specifically promote the Camden branch of the law school.

My older son's HS lacrosse team goes away for a weekend before the season starts and stays either on or near a NJ college. Last year it was Stockton and this year it's Rowan.

He didn't talk about Stockton but since he is thinking of engineering I am interested to see his impression/thoughts of Rowan.

And nor should it try (or forced) to be either.

Of course it shouldn't be forced. But consider: the more good students Rutgers attracts, the better the student body and the more prestigious the school. Offering a small college option (as the University of California does at Santa Cruz) would help attract students who don't want a megauniversity experience.

Do you mean there is small college set up inside at Santa Cruz or is that the small college option for the UC system?

Do we not do something similar already with Newark and Camden?

Sorry, I had forgotten that Santa Cruz is now much too big to be a small college option. . Newark is already at 10,000 students and Camden is near 6000. Not much of a small college atmosphere in either place -- although interestingly enough, surveys have shown that Camden undergrads enjoy their experience more than do NB/Piscataway students.

MSU along with Kean and Rowan are in mountains of debt. I don't think their strategy is one to emulate, and honestly the state needs to reign them in.

Rutgers built an apartment building in Camden that has not filled since its opening. Some of the building has already been fitted as office space

The plan is to slowly increase enrollment at Rutgers-Camden, so perhaps at some point the apartment building will attract more students. I don't think it will be that soon, though.

just saw this thread. I was talking to someone about this just a few days ago. The Montclair state campus is VERY nice. they planned the architectural features so that they align with the original architecture of the campus. I wish Rutgers NB had put some central planning into their campus development. At Rutgers, its like architects were given free reign to put anything they want on campus. Everything is different. maybe its personal preference, but id prefer a campus like University of Maryland or Montclair state in terms of the central plannign aspect of thigns.

Well on the whole aren't Montclair State and Maryland much smaller/compact/tighter than Rutgers (I'm including Douglass and Cook for the NB part)?

But I know what you mean.

Yes. If you mean they are, for the most part, a single, contiguous campus, then yes. Also, Rutgers NB total land area is about double the size of UM College Park.

Susan Cole was a high administrator at Rutgers in the 1980s and early 1990s. She was known as being tough then. Her reputation was good enough to get her a college presidency in Minnesota, and now she is at Montclair state. My guess is that she wanted to be president here after Edward Bloustein's sudden death in 1989, and became available for offers after that.

Scuttlebutt is that she burned a lot of bridges in Minnesota higher ed and may have been asked to leave.
