Talk about an utter disaster, outside of Grant, and the RBs sans the one fumble, and Federico no one came to do their job today.

1. Laviano really didn't show much, he was average at best, and then he flashed his Gary Nova impersonation with the fumble on the pump fake, an awfully thrown interception, another pass that should've been picked in the back of the endzone but two Cougars bumped into each other dislodging the ball from either one of them.

2. To start the game Laviano was gunning to get his targets killed, sailing passes high, and NO ZIP on the ball what so all. It looked Chad Pennington-esque out there, except Chad had an amazing football IQ, and good accuracy to find the window to get the ball into.

3. Awful penalties, most of which were honestly legitimate. Even the Goodwin PI call, he was blocking a DB 8+ yards downfield before the ball was even in the air.

4. OL didn't maul anyone until the second half.

5. It was obvious 3 man rushes, and even 4 weren't going to get to Falk in time. Rossi and Flood felt more comfortable in just giving a huge cushion and play the read and react game and hope the D could make the open field tackle. HINT they didn't make the open field tackle most of the time.

6. Federico did a good job out there nailing 2 long-ish FGs. I thought the blocked XP was on him, but upon further review the right side of the line pretty much vanished and allowed WSU to come in and easily block the kick.

7. Really was amazed WSU didn't get called for a single holding call all game long. There were quite a few times on the tunnel and bubble screens a WSU OL had both hands under the shoulder pad near the sleeve of the jersey directing where they want to push the RU defender away from.

8. Flood once again shows he can't even handle the simple basics of being a HC. His handling of the time outs in the second half was pitiful, especially when he called time out when WSU was pretty much set to take a delay of game penalty.

9. You had 13 seconds to make a play on the kickoff. Not 3, the 34324908 lateral play wasn't needed. The Up Man should've fallen on the ball, you get the ball with maybe 11-12 seconds left. That gives you legitimately 2 shots downfield, and you only needed a FG to tie the game.

10. Really would've liked to see the bunch formation used a lot more, especially with Patton and Carroo lined up together with Grant behind the two of them. Let the big bodies go downfield and clear out some space for the speedster.

11. DL was absolutely vanilla until about the last 3 minutes of the game did the stunts and twists start to make an appearance.

12. More can't be said about Grant. I was shocked that WSU kept kicking it to the 5 yard line letting Grant build a head of steam running into the ball. Don't know if it was a case of the WSU kicker not being able to drill it for a touchback or what, but Grant was perhaps the shiniest spot in an overcast dreary day.

13. The fact the game was so close despite the fact you lose the Turnover battle 3-0, and have a 100 yards of penalties is a miracle. It's much like the PSU game last year, being in a nail biter despite throwing 5 picks.

14. Can we run something other than the damn sweep toss. Yes it would work here and there, but you don't run it 4 times in the same drive. Though I would love to see the variation we used to run with Leonard and Rice with the fake FB handoff to the pitchout to the HB. It's funny that Schiano didn't trust any RB other than Leonard, Rice, or Kordell Young to run the toss play, but Flood is willing to let McDaniel call it what seemed to be a dozen times today.

15. Cioffi was pretty much the only DB who made plays, he had a few great pass break ups though out the day.

16. Punting seemed to be pretty solid, also the team was helped out by the fact Leach apparently coaches his returners to attempt to make any play possible on any return.

17. Would've liked to see Rettig get a shot, especially after the Laviano pump fake fumble.

18. Was legitimately shocked that Flood didn't take a knee going into the half.

There is much more, but this is all that I can think off the top of my head.

Great job. Very fair. In fact it points to just how screwed this team is with Flood right now. Perhaps Politi was right - Flood has lost this team seeing how unorganized and undisciplined they are.

You make an excellent point. You guys clean up some of the mental mistakes and you boys are going to be a tough out. Not an ounce of quit in your players, that's something to build on. I hope you guys stomp the Nittany Liars next week.

Gotta love Cioffi. That guy is a player.

I'm with you on all of the points... I want to believe in Flood. I want him to succeed, but games like today really make me doubt him. A ton of bad penalties, sticking with a QB through a horrible first half and mistakes early in the second -- even with a capable backup, and horrible time management.

Where are all the guys that used to say Schiano was a horrible gameday coach but Flood was not?

Unless the d line can get a pass rush we are in trouble ..
..lack of pass rush was far and away the biggest issue..............maybe we blitz more against team's who do not spread us out......one can hope

Great summary.

19). Davon Jacobs must seal the game with that int. No takeaways for us. That one. Would have done it.

Excellent observations....i agree with all you said and more...time management and TO's wasting like WE were leading in particular aggravate me. What a wasted game that should have been an easy W.Losing by stupidity or laziness really grates me with so few games....Can't waste 1 winnable game at home yet. So much for Bowling this yr.

Ok Knute Rockne, I'll play. What would you have done on Defense with three freshman starting in the defensive backfield and absolutely 0 depth at the position? Please enlighten us.

Rutgers didn't have one defensive playmaker on the field which resulted in no pass rush and no interceptions.Even with such poor defense Rutgers still could have won the game if just one of the touchdowns wasn't negated because of a penalty.A gut wrenching loss.

A good hc takes risks. The defense didn't take one risk all night. The plan seemed to be hope something went wrong and take advantage of that. I'm not saying send 6 or 7 guys on a blitz every play, but you have to mix things up.

Flood and Rossi were keeping the game plan vanilla so that they would not show anything for the Penn State game. smh...
