Najee Clayton no longer with team

hope it's not permanent...

PISCATAWAY -- Sophomore linebacker Najee Clayton, who was one of the first individual players to impress first-year coach Chris Ash during spring camp, has left the Rutgers football program and might not return.

Clayton, who made eight tackles playing in the first two games of the season on special teams and as Greg Jones' backup on the strong side, was not at Saturday's 37-28 victory against New Mexico after leaving the program Friday.

"Najee is not with us right now," Ash said. "He has stepped away for personal reasons right now and was not here with us today, and not sure what his status will be moving forward. But Najee Clayton is not with us right now."

Clayton, who played safety last season, entered training camp as a starter but was jumped by redshirt senior Greg Jones before the season-opener. He is still listed in the Rutgers University student directory.

Damn that sucks. Hopefully everything is alright and he can rejoin the team in the near future.

is he likely done at RU? If so this is a big blow and another case where Ru loses a potential impact player for whatever reason it ends up being. If only all these guys stayed with the program or out of trouble...

Reading NC's comments it seems like he wasn't adjusting too well to being passed on the depth chart. I'm not saying that's the reason but sometimes kids just need a little space to figure it all out. I hope that's what's happening here

People get passed on depth charts every single day. Get over it, do better, earn your spit back. Dont hang your head and walk away (if this was the case).

If that is the reason, then it's a very bad decision, especially in football where the likelihood of injury is so high you are almost guaranteed to get your opportunity to start if you are in the two deep.

If it's about being passed on the depth cart, it's hard to argue given what #33 has done on the field.

Greg Jones has been our most reliable linebacker. Clayton needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror.
