National Anthem

Ok. Need to add to the manual how an intern reacts/behave when a military man unexpectedly takes the mic. What about if he was a policeman? A Nurse.

Happened in front of me as well, and it did look odd. Was talking to my wife and a friend about it at 1/2 time. My take is that the guy was somehow either chaperoning the JR Navy kids holding the flag or was there to be acknowledged. It didn’t look to me like he was supposed to sing (it didn’t sound that way either). The band was 75’ away in the stands and clearly didn’t seem like they were accompanying a singer... they were also a bit ahead in the song. I don’t think he was announced either (as most anthem singers are).

I know from my LL days we had fundraisers with the Somerset Patriots including kids singing the anthem. The process was very formal, and I would expect ours to be as well. It simply looked like the kid, the soldier, or both made an on the spot mistake.

If this guy wasn’t screened and didn’t audition for singing the anthem then there is no way he should have been given a mic. If he was then someone has some “splainin” to do. You don’t just hand a mic to folks... who knows what they’re going to say :flushed:

He was definitely supposed to be singing...but the uniformed officer was WAAAAY late getting on the court and taking his spot.

By the time he started singing, he was completely out of time, the unfortunate mistake occurred and it became a disaster.

It was decidedly uncomfortable to watch...but just an array of mistakes rolled up into one embarassing outcome

thanks for the update..ouch

I think the folks at the athletic department by in large a doing a very good job.

I get it that this situation and the garbage can full is not good. Let’s remember there is a limited budget for everything. I am sure the university is in charge of taking garbage out. There are many things needed to be done by the athletic department to get ready for game day. I don’t think EVERY little thing that can possibly go wrong should be checked. Now if it were a repeat garbage full that is an issue.

Not sure about that - The announcer specifically said the anthem would be played by the band and made absolutely no mention of a singer (they always name the singer) - unless they just thought he was going to show and made the announcer aware of it.

The singer was an hour late arriving at the arena, was cut from performing, and the band was going to play the anthem with no vocal.

Somehow he made his way on to the floor uncredentialed and was given a live mic by staff after being cut...took his spot and began singing.

His performance was halted because, at that point, he was not supposed to be there.

Gonna lock this one now...
