NCAA selection show discussion

Ohio State was a 10 seed which is the same line as Indiana and behind Purdue. By rpi and body of work, I never saw why other bracketologists were so high on them. I thought they were only a shade better than Purdue and Indy heading into the Big 10 tournament and didnt play all that well in the Big 10 tourney. Their biggest plus was no bad losses but they were 1-7 vs top 50

I think the committee even though they are not supposed to look at conference affiliation could not justify taking 4 schools from the Mountain West a conference that was down this year. Boise State got the nod over Colorado State because they won the regular season title, it was very hard to separate those two.

If you look at the last 4 that got in...the 3 added at large bids actually when the field expanded from 65 to 68....Boise State, Dayton, Ole Miss, and BYU. They al have holes on their resumes as do schools like UCLA and Texas who also sit on the 11 seed line.

I don't think this is really about who got in and who didn't. These bubble teams all have holes and could have done more. It just seems that every year they value something different. The target seems to move and most of the time teams don't know what to do until its too late. This year the committee seemed to value overall strength of schedule, which weighted it strongly in favor of the P5 conferences. A few years ago, it rewarded teams from mid-majors that had very good seasons. Next year it might be teams that have birds as mascots. The members of the committee change every year or two, and with them the criteria for getting in the dance.

lol.. good point that is so true, they will change the criteria to fit their selections every year. I do wonder who was the Pac 10 representative on the committee.

If I am not mistaken, they said it was Duke's 20th straight bid.

I looked up to see if Rutgers 24 year shutout is a record, but it is not.

Schools that have never made it ( a list from last year):

- Northwestern:

- Army:

- St. Francis-NY:

- William & Mary:

- The Citadel:
Schools that have not made it in in a long time:

Bowling Green (no appearances since 1968), Rice (1970), VMI (1977),
Duquesne (1977), Furman (1980), Toledo (1980), Mercer (1985),
Jacksonville (1986), Marshall (1987), Idaho State (1987), Marist (1987),
Middle Tennessee State (1989), Oregon State (1990), Loyola Marymount
(1990), Idaho (1990), Towson (1991), Northeastern (1991), St. Francis-PA
(1991), Rutgers (1991), Howard (1992), Georgia Southern (1992), La
Salle (1992), Campbell (1992), Fordham (1992), Coastal Carolina (1993),
East Carolina (1993), and SMU (1993)--they're in this year!!.
Coastal Carolina, Northeastern and SMU from that list are all in it this year....and La Salle made the sweet 16 a few years back. I believe the coach on that Jacksonville team in 1986 was none other than Bob Wenzel
Poor attention span by me! Coastal Carolina (1993); SMU (1993); Northeastern (1991)--Rutgers (1991)--Our time is going to come soon?????

How did the big east get those seeds--4 and 6s for Friars and Xavier and butler....
Too many props for a mid major....can any of those teams get to the 2nd wkend

You can keep trying, but the Big East are not mid majors. At least not yet, Give it ten years and check back.

How the hell Is witchata state an inferior seed to Georgetown?

And again ...north Carolina or Duke get home games

Big 12 was grossly overrated IMO.

How does the ACC champ with 5 losses fall behind 4 Big 12 teams? I get ND's OOC schedule was weak but they beat a #1 seed in Duke, twice............... Additionally, how does Maryland get a 4 seed behind the likes of Iowa State and Baylor?

"North Carolina vs. Harvard. Academic difference."

This will be interesting. I can't wait to see the clever roll-out banners from the Harvard fans at this game. It should be hilarious! And maybe since the evil empire isn't the one broadcasting the tournament, those banners might actually be shown on TV.

My under-informed opinions on the field:

Duke as a #1 - a bit of a surprise vs UVA based on overall results, but they won the head-to-head so it's not terrible. Either way, both play in Charlotte in the first two rounds.

The top teams almost always play close to home. All of the #1 and #2 seeds have what should be friendly first (uhh - second and third
mad.r191677.gif
) round venues.

Kentucky - Louisville, KY (same state)
Duke - Charlotte, NC (same state)
Villanova - Pittsburgh (same state)
Wisconsin - Omaha, NE (one of the closest sites to home, Columbus might be closer? - conference mate's state)

Kansas - Omaha, NE (closest to home)
Arizona - Portland, OR (PAC-12 state)
Virginia - Charlotte, NC (conference affiliation, will be packed with Duke fans probably rooting for UVA too)
Gonzaga - Seattle, WA (same state)

Dayton got a raw deal, Boise State has it worse having to play them in Dayton to make the "real" field.
Georgetown as a #4, same as Maryland? That just looks wrong.
Colorado State deserved in over UCLA.
I wish the play in "first round" games were all bubble teams and all automatic bid winners were in the field of 64, but that's never coming back.

Possible 2nd round matchups:

Michigan State should easily handle Georgia and move on to what could be a great defensive battle with UVA. That would be a fun one to watch.

Wichita State - Kansas would be fun too, if the Shockers beat the Hoosiers.

What if St Johns beats San Diego State and plays Duke - they can't BOTH lose... ugh...

Our OOC schedule was really awful-------only Tourney teams we played were Purdue and Providence and we split.

Bad loss at home to Cuse IMO put us on the 3 or 4 line and if we had lost Saturday night to UNC I think we would have been a 4 seed.

I meant to post this last night but forgot in all the other discussion.

Kudos to CBS for getting right to the bracket. For years they have been messing around with the #1 seeds, and the final four matchups. etc. I know it's only a few minutes but by 6:00 we are ready for some brackets. I would say that by 6:02 we are into the bracket. Good job CBS.

We beat Michigan State too. OOC was weak but beating a number one seed, not once, but twice should count for something. Winning the ACC tourney should count for something.

Baylor lost to Illinois and Kansas State, Iowa State lost to South Carolina and Kansas State and OU lost to KSU twice and Creighton.
