I read this Todderick article, and as usual, it is laden with typoos.
But after reading it, I am still left wondering.
https://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/...yce_nelms_choose_pitt_over_rutgers_his_l.html

In Nelms' words
For this segment, we caught up with Nelms himself who broke down his reasons for committing to Pitt on his official visit, and how Rutgers just missed out in the end.

“About two or three weeks ago, I was talking to Coach Salem and he asked me and my family if we wanted to come out for an official. And we said, yeah, why not. I was just gonna post a new top 5 and in they were in the top five. I knew I had five visits so I said yes. So my mom flew up. Me and my dad flew down. And when we got there, there was just so much to take in. There were so many factors that made me come to the decision that this is the school I want to play for.” -Nelms

Nelms' factors in picking Pitt
  • Pitt shares facilities with the Steelers.
  • “I’ll be playing for coach Charlie Partridge, one of the best D-line coaches in the U.S."
  • Impressed with the Cathedral of learning – 42 floors with every class in it
  • Academic support and ability to build a major

How about playing in half filled Stadium that is off campus ?
How about the Academic status at Rutgers ?
How about playing in front of your Family and Friends each year?

Doesn’t seeing the Field early appeal to Nelms ?

That was a very confusing article with odd comments from both the player and coach. This smells to me like a kid who will attend our practices and games and still go to Pitt in the end. I would not be a good coach because I would freeze him out and make him drive five hours to enjoy that stuff.

Actually it sounded to me like a kid on his first official visit who got swept up in the momentum of 13 commitments in one weekend.

Pitt does have one advantage for players families, there always a lot of parking available on game days.

Pittsburgh had the biggest drop in ACC home attendance in 2017, dipping from over 46,000 per game in 2016 to just over 36,000 per game this past season. Some of it due to the fact they hosted Penn State in 2016 when as we know, PSU fans accounted for significant ticket sales that day.

Sounds like a coach who was upset he didn't commit to Rutgers. Still could flip for sure. But for all the negative comments about pitt, it is a fine university in a very nice city. The football program is ahead of rutgers. I don't know how any rutgers fan can look down on any p5 program at the moment. I hope rutgers improves and I think they will slowly. I would think they can pull talent out of southeastern pa, maybe they already have. It is hard with local recruits when they are exposed to all the negative. Takes time. Pitt often has the same issue though there is far more talent in jersey than western pa

This ain't over.

Not even close to over.

Not to say it's a reason to pick a school in and of itself, but the Cathedral of Learning is an exceptionally cool building.

Seems like his head coach was just as surprised as everyone on here. I'm a bit leary of this decision. His 1st official and bam that's it? If he starts taking his other official visits this one's far from over. Just an odd decision so early in the process, but I will say one thing I wish we had hired, Charlie Partridge he's a helluva salesman.

Sure sounded like the coach thinks this want a well thought out decision
That's the way I heard it. West Orange's Coach Salem is upset with Pitt and their staff for creating the hysteria that their class is filling up, forcing the kids on the official visit to commit to save their spot.

I have a feeling this won't end well for Pitt. Can't see many of the 9 still sigining with them come signing day. Just a bunch of kids caught up in the hype machine they built.

If you read the article the right way, it’s basically saying Pitt treated him like royalty and did more than Rutgers did. Rutgers calls to see what they did wrong. Rutgers, you did nothing wrong. The kid doesn’t know the difference between “official visit” and unofficial visit. Pitt did more because it was his official visit and when visiting Rutgers unofficially, they did little within the rules. Pitt probably used the kids ignorance in it’s favor to gain a commitment.

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Pitt doesn’t end up signing half the kids that committed this past weekend...it will be funny when all those kids keep taking officials...as the coach said, with the new recruiting dates in place kids will feel the need to verbally commit somewhere to hold their spot...the true test will be if those kids stop taking visits

Its up to Ash to decide whether he should still keep that offer open. I know Flood got a lot of grief for pulling offers from kids who took officials someplace else, but maybe there's a way to gently pull the offer and tell the kid that if he changes his mind give us a call. You know.. close the door, but on good terms. With the seeming permanent loss of this opportunity, maybe he feels regret... when forced to confront it. And if not.. then its best we know now.

Keep recruiting Nelms until all the DL/DE slots are filled. Accept all 1st tier recruits if they want to verbal. I think Ash has to sign at least 4 or 5 DL/DE recruits this cycle.

Very good point. If he goes on any of his other alloted officials, his eyes will be opened (assuming Pitt doesn't discourage him from doing so). RU has the slight disadvantage of 'familiarity breeds contempt' and won't be showing him much that is new when it comes to RU if he does an official visit. Pitt wowed him since they were allowed to.

Article was interesting as I was unaware his mom is from the Atlanta region, and it seems he has a natural affinity to the SEC. Plus him knowing second-hand how the dream can be taken away due to spaces being filled put a bit more pressure than he expected on the visit could've been a big factor.

As noted above, this isn't over, unless Ash decides to back off. I, for one, would be disappointed if he doesn't put on the full-court press all the way to LOI day.

Its not over until December or February.

However, I am sure the results of the current football season (W/L) will also play a big part in this.

Stay tuned.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Up the street we would refer to it as the Tower of Ignorance

Different strokes for different folks depending on what you want to major in.

If you want to pursue a career in the Health Care Professions, you would have a hard time finding a University better than Pitt.

According to US News Best American Graduate Schools 2019, ALL of Pitt's Health Care Professions are ranked in the Top 20 in the Nation (Physical Therapy #1, Occupational Therapy #4, Nursing DNP #5, Pharmacy #9, Medicine #14 etc.).

For example, if one would want to compare Medical Schools.

Consider all the great Medical School's in the Big Ten, the fact remains that no Big Ten Medical School is ranked higher than Pitt's Medical School.

In the ACC, only Duke University Medical School is ranked higher than Pitt's Medical School.

Although, one can always debate the merits of the ranking system.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

That seems high doesn’t it. How many do we lose after this season? Bateky and Wilkins for sure. Maybe a transfer. With the 25 ship limit I say more likely 3 but possibly 4.

So What.

I'm sure recruits are more interested in the schools number of Consensus All-Americans, College Football Hall of Famers, Pro Football Hall of Famers, NFL Draft Picks etc.

Penn State (including over 20 Branch Campuses) has 99,000 students compared to Pitt's 35,000 students (3 PSU alums for 1 Pitt alum). LOL!!!! they should have higher attendance at their erector set stadium because there are a lot more of them.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

We are being petty as usual because you got one of our targets growl but attendance should be a concern of yours. You have a similar issue to us cause all of your local fans are Steeler fans and you have the cult a few hours East.

Not all the DE/DT's that's for sure. Seems they're building quite a log jam at those positions. Unless Pitt is churning these kids up and spitting them out or moving a lot to LB and OL I don't see how the numbers work if they honor all their commitments.
They took DT/DE:
2016- 7
2017- 3
2018- 5
2019- 6
That's 21 commits. I know DT/DE is an important position but 25% of your roster simply can't be devoted to it. Maybe they lost a few or moved a few but that's still a lot of bodies manning 4 positions.
