Nelms and His HS Coach Explain

Well, if he doesn't wind up decommitting and signing with RU, I think that we should look to rename Hill Hall. [roll]

Not all the DE/DT's that's for sure. Seems they're building quite a log jam at those positions. Unless Pitt is churning these kids up and spitting them out or moving a lot to LB and OL I don't see how the numbers work if they honor all their commitments.
They took DT/DE:
2016- 7
2017- 3
2018- 5
2019- 6
That's 21 commits. I know DT/DE is an important position but 25% of your roster simply can't be devoted to it. Maybe they lost a few or moved a few but that's still a lot of bodies manning 4 positions.

I think we should make a trade offer to Pitt. Maybe a couple of our DBs or RBs for a couple of D-lineman.

I read this Todderick article, and as usual, it is laden with typoos.
But after reading it, I am still left wondering.

In Nelms' words
For this segment, we caught up with Nelms himself who broke down his reasons for committing to Pitt on his official visit, and how Rutgers just missed out in the end.

“About two or three weeks ago, I was talking to Coach Salem and he asked me and my family if we wanted to come out for an official. And we said, yeah, why not. I was just gonna post a new top 5 and in they were in the top five. I knew I had five visits so I said yes. So my mom flew up. Me and my dad flew down. And when we got there, there was just so much to take in. There were so many factors that made me come to the decision that this is the school I want to play for.” -Nelms

Nelms' factors in picking Pitt
  • Pitt shares facilities with the Steelers.
  • “I’ll be playing for coach Charlie Partridge, one of the best D-line coaches in the U.S."
  • Impressed with the Cathedral of learning – 42 floors with every class in it
  • Academic support and ability to build a major
1.THEY PLAY IN A RENTAL -2. DOUBT THAT STRONGLY -3. If he wants a leaning Tower,go to ITALY 4.RU ACADEMIC SUPPORT IS OUTSTANDING AND NYC WILL GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME. CONCLUSION:He was really never ours.

Here is the problem with what Pitt has currently done in my mind and I’m honestly glad we aren’t in their position...regardless of how many commits they might have right now...

A whole bunch of kids committed while on a high from an official visit weekend...happens all the time, there is a name for it...”Group Think”...however, once the high wears off and these kids go back (mostly down south) and they realize they still have for the most part 3 or 4 more official visits to take...

Here is the problem, what happens when Pitt starts having to turn away defensive lineman. Only to have 2 or 3 of these guys, including Nelms, decide once the season rolls around that you know what, there are better options than playing in front of 30,000 empty yellow seats thousands of miles from home...the drawback of these early OVs causing early verbals is not that it’s allowing kids to make decisions earlier it’s FORCING kids with limited options to verbally commit to “hold their spot” somewhere while they wait the next 6 months before signing day and continue to go to camps to see if they can earn a better offer...do you think a bunch of kids from Florida that have other Power 5 options really want to play at Pitt?

Wait till he's on line for an elevator trying to get to his next class on time 30 floors up. Oops, better take the stairs. Built in the late 1920's .....Miserable.

I guess Narduzzi just can't win with some of the Rutgers fans.
On June 7 I was on the Board defending Pitt so to speak commenting on the fact that Pitt only had 1 recruit but I was not worried. Now we have gotten too many recruits too quickly.:)

As I said on a previous post, I think Pitt will keep all/most of the recruits including the Southerns (Pitt currently has about 17 recruits from Florida on its roster who made the trip up North). Can have this discussion again in December.

On another recruiting matter, I have a question for you or other Rutgers fans who may want to comment.

Most recently, Pitt got a commitment from Jason Collier TE (6-7 250 from Westvill NJ) who was a Rivals 2-star (247 3-star) who had P-5 offers from Pitt, Maryland, Virginia, Syracuse and Duke. Pitt's 2nd TE commit.

Ash recently received a commitment from Tyler Devera TE (6-5 227 from Oradell NJ) who was also a Rivals 2-star but had no other P-5 offers. Understand, I am not questioning the potential success of Tyler who could become an NFL TE. Rather I am more interested in your/Rutgers fans comments/thoughts as to why ASH never even offered Jason.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

A TE, LB and guess what a DE. What's the strategy here? Take as many DE/DT's as possible and move them to a position of need?

Let’s see how many of your commits from last week continue to take visits to other schools...then we will see if Narduzzi “won”...if these kids continue to take other visits, whether official or not...I’d be very concerned about how solid these guys are and if you need to continue recruiting especially DLineman...

I believe Collier WAS offered by Ash and staff...but Deveney committee first and Devera’s brother is a freshman here so he likely knew he had to jump on board or lose his spot completely...

And even though it’s a down year in PA...why have you not managed to get but 1 of the top 20 in the state to commit? I guess it’s only a matter of one before the Duzz pulls in Devonshire, Porter and Gipson...can’t let those kids in your own backyard get away that don’t have PSU or OSU offers....

Speaking of 2 star TE commits. what’s your thoughts on Luke Benson? Cuse picked him up last night after a good camp performance last week. Im wondering because he’s from a good program and has 15 FCS/Ivy offers but Cuse is the only P5.

You know I don't follow Syracuse recruiting, so please don't accuse me of any such thing. But I was bored with watching my grass grow, and you asked a question. Despite being an obnoxious Cuse fan, I am feeling a bit helpful this morning.

I googled Luke Benson TE and came up with nothing on him.

Syracuse.com had this to say:
https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/nelms-and-his-hs-coach-explain.146421/page-2#post-3345346

Unrated by the major recruiting services, Benson also holds offers from Temple, Army, Villanova, Harvard and Yale, among others.

Don't see him listed for your team. Where do you get that he is a 2 star?

My grass just grew 0.01 inches, and I have to get back to something more interesting. Have a nice day.

I mean all you have to do is look at every committ Pitt got over the weekend. To a man they all had a lot of P5 offers. From every conference. There are a couple that haven’t been evaluated yet by rivals.

Obviously those kids from Florida who had a ton of offers Picked Pitt. So I don’t understand your point.

I mean Pitt went 8-5 back to back years . Playing the nations toughest out of conference schedule.

Pitt has beat Clemson, Penn st, Miami during Narduzzi ‘s first 3 years as head coach.

Last year they went 5-7 due to the fact they lost their starting QB very early. Then having to play with the worst P5 QB in the country most of the season.

What hurts Pitt is they play in a stadium that holds 70,000. Actual season tickets sold and average attendance is around 45,000. Which is the same amount of fans who’s teams have to compete with the NFL.

I agree... until they get that issue fixed. Getting 4 and 5 stars regularly is going to be tuff. Having 40,000 people at a game in a stadium that holds 70,000 is a total eye sore.

Well its only June, so I guess we will wait and see how many PA recruits Pitt ends up with by February. I think Narduzzi did get some quality recruits so far as Rivals has us ranked at 26 with no Rival 5 or 4 star players.

According to the Rivals offers list, Jason never received an offer from Ash. Curious.

Will these kids take other visits.....Who knows? There 18 year old kids.

One thing I will say this class currently seems really really close. Something past Pitt classes didn’t show. Thanks to 3 or 4 kids who are instrumental in getting other Florida players to come to Pitt. That the staff is sill recruiting.

Narduzzi made a commitment early to hit Georgia, Florida, Alabama, the Carolinas because Pa is so down this year. Which is why it took so long to get recruits early on.

Don't know much about him so I can't really comment.

However, I see Courtney Jackson WR (Rivals 2-star) committed to you who had 18 total offers including 5 from P5 schools. Western Pa kid near Pittsburgh.

Don't know why Narduzzi/Pitt did not offer him a ship at this point.

Pitt is going to end up getting Devonshire even though Narduzzi just offered. Porter Is no longer a take for LSU or Ped st. Do I think Pitt has a shot to get him? It’s not clear how bad Pitt wants him.

Gibson doesn’t have a offer from Pitt

Courtney Jackson was a great pick up. Not sure why rivals has him as a 2 star right now. The kid led PA in rec, yards and TD's ( 96, 1900, 24 TD's) goes to a power house school that plays good competition. He fits Cuse system well.

Looks like this thread turned into two Pitt fans and a Syracuse fan talking amongst themselves...

I didn’t realize how clearly you are a Pitt fan not an RU fan...anyway it’s true a lot of these guys had P5 offers sure...from most of the programs that struggle to make bowl games (including a few that we offered) but Pitt beat out the usual suspects that offer lower tier kids like Cuse, Temple, NC State, Illinois, Kansas, BC, Kentucky etc...one kid had an LSU offer that wasn’t commitable but other than that how many had some high level P5 offers that were actually commitable? I’m just not impressed by any of the commits really except Nelms who I doubt you hang on to...

It’s called Group think like I said in my OP...most of these kids just met each other of course they seem close now...like I said we can revisit after we see how many actually stick
