New Brunswick Councilman Egan Tapped to Join Rutgers Board of Governors

I don't know anything about Egan beside what Tango Two says, but this strikes me as an unusual appointment. Usually "town" and "gown" are opposed. And, while I don't know, I think it's unlikely that Egan is the kind of "moneybag" that usually gets to serve. Maybe Murphy wanted someone who will bring the two together on, for instance, redevelopment and traffic issues, among others.

Seems he's a union guy, and Murphy has to tend to that constituency.
Now does that mean he's going to do whatever the AFT and other RU public sector unions want?
Maybe, but not necessarily. See Sweeney, Stephen; Senate President.
Egan is a RU Grad - Labor Studies.

The Unions negotiate with the administration, not with the BOG, which is the equivalent of the Board of Directors of a corporation. At most, this guy can tell the administration what he thinks it should do. That matters only if he actually has the votes on the BOG, which he won't.

I think the move makes a lot of sense. Egan knows New Brunswick very well. He will bring a good perspective to that board. Plus he is a season ticket holder so that checks a box for athletics as well. Lastly, it's an appointment by the Governor, which usually can be putting a bull in a china shop. This is a heck of a pick IMO.

Of course. But recall the damage a certain New Brunswick power broker who was a mole for the Happy Valley Nits did to RU as a board member.

It only took so many decades but I think we finally are starting to have both a state and university government that see the value in being a major research university with a major sports program rather than using the school to advance patronage and provincialism.

On its face it just seems like a local but he's an alum and season ticket holder and those are two great boxes to check. Overall while I have ragged on NB local "leadership" as much if not more than anyone if they finally see RU as an ally and not an opponent that's a win.
