NJ high school coach suspended for winning by too much

If you're up by that much, you play your five worst kids the whole 4th quarter (maybe even the whole second half depending on the score) and if the bottom of your bench keeps dominating, you tell them to pass the ball around the perimeter until they have run the shot clock down and then they may shoot. No fast breaks, no layups. Defensively, you let the opponent cross half-court and then you play your regular defense.

If the coach did that, you can't blame him for the lopsided score. On the other hand, if the coach has starters in the game and is running a full court press or fast break layups, a suspension could be warranted (if it was already an issue previously).

Does it show how many free throws they took in the fourth? That’s a Legitimate question as well, if they were in the bonus and the other team kept fouling are they not supposed to take the free throws?
That is not available in the box score. 10 of their points for the game were free throws.

Thats sh*tty then. I also coached youth lacrosse for a few years after I graduated from RU. In a lot of ways the two sports have similar offenses and there’s definitely ways to limit the scoring. I feel like if the school went so far as to take this type of measure, the coach had to have been trying to run up the score. In which case he should be suspended

Considering the guy probably should have been running his second team by Q2 and his third and out the whole second half I have zero pity for him. The story is very vague so it's hard to say how he played it but coaches who do stuff like this don't just demoralize the opposition but also their own bench players if they don't handle things in a certain way.

And there’s no shot clock in New Jersey!

I’m sure it’s all by design. The coach is trying to get his name out there. No such thing as bad press for winning by too much.

In HS, I played for a powerhouse lacrosse program (we won 47 straight over 3 seasons). Most of the games were lopsided. At the time, the league was relatively new and our squad had been playing travel ball together since we were 8, we were going up against some schools with 1st and second year players starting just to have numbers on the field.

Our coach implemented what we called ‘the 19 goal rule’. We were not aloud to take a shot once we hit 19 goals. We would work it around the horn and practice defending our clears. Those were the days man…

Probably followed the Tierney Rule he imposed when he had those dominant Princeton teams.

The positive news is that we'll never need to worry about this problem in the men's football department.

This is too much, I could see if the coach presssed or kept the starters in. But the kids should be able to play the game and getting suspended by winning too much is overboard. Do it like baseball or softball with a run rule concept, end the game if a team leads by 40. Don’t ask the kids to stand out there and not complete.

like others have said...if the following three things were followed you absolutely cannot suspend the coach:

- pull starters midway thru third qtr
- "NO FAST BREAK" from same point in third qtr
- "NO PRESS AND/OR HALFCOURT TRAP" from same point in third qtr

SJ Vianney won 87-10 yesterday vs Matawan...they wouldn't DARE pick up the phone to call Karpell

Vianney was up 33-0 after first qtr. what was she supposed to do? not play her starters? take a game a way from Seniors who worked all off season for their final year?

It was 84 - 20 after 3 quarters (up 64 points!) and Immaculate poured on 20 more points in the 4th. Being a top-level Parochial program their "scrubs" may be better than the public high school starters. In addition, there a number of things a coach can do to limit his team's scoring. Coach got what he deserved.
Sounds like he broke the clock rules also. So it’s probably a combination of pouring it on and not following the clock rules.

If backups backups are in scoring is fair game. But being a coach on the winning side of this is hard to manage.

For those that do not know besides coaching lacrosse I am also a head field hockey coach. We have won back to back state titles, are nationally ranked, etc.

We played a game this fall, a required game, that we won 15-0. This is an incredibly high score, and I had the backups, backups, in. I caught a lot of flack for the game.

My 3rd stringers are good enough to run our systems, go to goal, and play hard, but they were not good enough to play keep away from the other team. It was in an odd situation of trying to decide if I should put the starters back in just to control the game, or to allow my freshmen opportunities to score in a varsity game.

I am always of the mindset of allow backups to play the game. I have gotten my teeth kicked in before, but some people get very upset for it.

Looking at the box score MI scored 59 in the first half and 45 in the second (20 was their lowest and in the 4th quarter).

They have a roster of 10 girls and played 9. 4 girls scored in double figured. 5 other girls scored 3 or more points. This looks like a case of MI clearing the bench, but not having much else to go to.

MI is 3-0 with scoring 57 in their other two games against good teams.

Caldwell is 0-1 and do not play for another week.
Playing subs is the right thing to do. Playing keep away would have been insulting.

They play a 20+ games season. Yes, pull starters and let your bench play. Taking a game away from seniors is a weak argument.

Yes, of course. When a game is over (and at 33-0, it's over), you play your bench players. That's not just good sportsmanship, it's smart long-term coaching because you're just begging to get one of your starters injured for no reason.

Yes, the game is over - you play your bench players and let them gain experience.

Yeah, that's a big part of it. If he's got the scrubs in and they're still scoring, what's he supposed to do?
I have seen Schiano run the same running play back to back in blow out games to not run up the score.

Probably would have done a Hoosiers rule … pass X amount of times before you shoot … make it something like 15 passes … then it would be like 45-60 seconds per possession.
