NJ HS FB & Wrestling separates Publics &'Private HS 's

Inevitable for football but a terrible idea for wrestling. This will only serve to make the state championship tournament weaker. I'm with Monsignor Kelly on this one.

I think the vote was just approved for football and not wrestling. Football separation makes sense.

"The football and wrestling separation proposals passed by nearly identical margins as 345 of the 433 member schools cast votes. The football proposal passed, 215 to 128 with two abstentions, while the wrestling proposal passed 216 to 121 with eight abstentions."

I read it to say both were passed on separate votes. The state wresting tournament is in effect an individual tournament so any system that groups a larger than expected number of top wresters into one district will dilute the finals. Teams currently have conference, county and group championships to vie for so for those publics stuck in a district with a Bergen Catholic its not really such a big deal. When was the last time South Plainfield did not win their district?

Terrible for wrestling. privates that do not recruit(which is most of them, other than the big 6) are going to see their programs disappear.
Publics will be watered down. How are states going to be run? NJ is one of few that have 1 state champ per weighht now I guess it will be 2 per weight

I think some parochials are going to sue. SHP , maybe some of the SNJ Parochils . Doubt they have grounds but you never know.

Some of these small privates are barely hanging on to their wrestling programs now (Hudson cath, St mary,)but at least kids had a shot at AC. Thrown in with the big 6 their gonna foldup

So what about those charter schools who can take in anyone? Or those County magnet schools (Audubon, Sterling, Haddonfield) and Vo Tech schools who can get anyone from their county or region?

And for every a Don Bosco or St Peters Prep, you have your Marist, Queen of Peace, St Anthony, Gloucester Catholic, Wildwood Catholic who have no business being grouped into the the Bosco and Preps of the world.

Agree, but many more non recruiting catholics than those that do.. Also QP is a big recruiter these days, belong with the big 6

The publics are short sided--as usual.

This entire movement started in the late 90s with Nutley and Barringer drumming up interest to break up the NNJIL.

At the time, BC and St. Joe's Montvale were state powers and little else. Bosco, in the words of Fred Stengel, was "what you put in your milk." Paramus Catholic stunk. DePaul was toying with the idea of shutting down. St. Peter's had lots of individual talent, but didn't excel with consistency outside of Hudson County. Seton Hall Prep was middling. Delbarton was the cream of group 3, but nothing great.

Fast forward to today. I just got an alumni email for a 6 day package to travel with St. Peter's Prep to Ireland for next season's opener. It is the undercard to the Boston College-Georgia Tech game.

In the Big North we have 4 legitimate national programs in Bergen, Joes, Bosco and PC. DePaul plays out of state games and is loaded with talent.

I won't even get into what has happened in wrestling.

The actions of the publics have had exactly the opposite effect they sought. Their programs are still on life support, they lose more kids than ever and in many cases, their wrestling programs will begin to close.
