Northwestern

I'm rooting for Minnesota to win the whole thing honestly but man NW can shoot. They are draining everything right now and have no signs of letting up.

Beats Maryland with two long scoring runs. Maybe puts the run against Rutgers in some perspective. They are no fluke. A good team. They don't bother me. Hope they win the B1G tournament and beat Wisconsin and then Michigan.

Happy for NW

Listening to the MD radio broadcast, and they have a lot of good things to say about NW.

Makes me feel much better about our result last night.
NW is feeling it.

They went on a 20-2 run against Maryland tonight. They just don't miss, everyone can score, everyone can pass, everyone hits FTs, everyone can run, and they play good defense. These guys are gonna be good for a while. I hope we follow in their footsteps because, like us, they were terrible for many decades.

Minnesota would be my next favorite. I don't hold the sins of father against the son.

USF going to make a run at Richard Pitino and might get him

um this makes no sense at all. Pitino is in a legit conference that can pay him tons, he can be a top 5 Big 10 program every year. USF....a program worse than RU with no fans and very poor perception....Pitino potentially pissing away his upward trajectory to take a chance on a school is a second tier conference...its not UConn he would be leaving Minny for

I don't know about all that, especially since this is the first year he has had a winning record in the B1G. All those things you posted about USF I agree with. Pitino has been interested in the USF job for a while now and some influential people associated with USF want him to be the next HC. Time will tell if it actually happens.

Wisconsin too much for Northwestern , 38-21 half time.

You never know what is in the mind of coaches but I think Pitino would be making a mistake at this time to go to South Florida. He has a lot of talent at Minnesota at this time.

It was great to hear of that 31-0 run again.
Yeah, Jim Nance said something like may have been longest in Big Ten history....ughh

And the two remaining teams I was rooting for - Northwestern and Minnesota- go down.

Oh well. Hmmm. Wisconsin or Michigan...that's a tuffy

Well look what happens when not every shot goes in, or you do not get every bounce go your way. Northwestern played a super A game against us and got every break during their run, including 4 illegal screens and our missing 4-5 point blank shots. Really a shame because I really think we are evenly matched. Their wings , Lindsay and Law , are the key to heir team, and the other day they hit almost every shot as did the rest of their starting 5, and today not so much. Played late last night and exerted a lot of energy to beat Maryland and their home crowd. They are down 30 with under 4 to go. Not 15-18 or 20 but 30. Funny this game of basketball

Someone very dialed in confirmed the USF run for Pitino Jr...people are forgetting how somewhat restrictive recruiting in the B1G can be. Also the chaos that was witnessed earlier with the Minnesota football program and how the president and AD dealt with the football players wasn't all that popular.

That was about a month ago and things change quickly. ..Minnesota hot streak may have changed things but would not shock me to see Pitino Jr leave Minneapolis.

Drew from Baylor may be looking to escape Waco and the hurdles there as well. ...

Maybe some of the issues surrounding the program last year haven't completely been fixed. Could be jumping ship before it takes in water.

Just a wild guess.

USF may make the run but it wouldnt make any sense for him. Its a startup program basically with fans that do not care, do you think there are big hoops donors there. Its a coaching graveyard...Heath eeked out one NCAA appearance with a middling team.

I think some of that stuff probably started because Pitino was on the hot seat at the end of last year, he survived but came into the year on a hot seat. With the job he did at Minnesota this year he could have a pick of a better job even though the Minny gig is very good, he would be laughed at for going to a horrid program with ceiling in USF

RU is not evenly matched with Northwestern. They shoot the ball well on a consistent basis. It's amazing how much easier putting the ball in the basket makes the game.

you can say that again....RU is not evenly matched with Northwestern..that was absurd of him to say., RU can compete with Northwestern and can even beat them but when Northwestern is at their best that is when RU gets taken care of rather easily. Northwestern was not at their best the first two meetings

Northwestern got off to a terrible start. Hit 1-9 and fell behind 15-3. Meanwhile, Wisconsin was almost hitting everything and not having problems getting to the basket. Once Hayes got warmed up, it didn't matter. Wisconsin hit 12-29 3's. Wasn't NU's day in a blowout loss.
Still in the NCAA' s for sure.
Watched some of the Albany-Vermont final and they have guys that can put the ball in the basket. But they have Bigs that can dribble and drive and adjust their shots. They could definitely play for us. Don't know where they find these guys.

They develop them. Players learn skills in programs like those. Or they find them in places that other programs aren't looking. This was part of an interesting story about Kansas' Frank Mason III:

After growing up in Petersburg, Virginia, Mason III signed with Towson during his senior year in high school, but because of an educational discrepancy, he was not able to attend the university located in Maryland. That is where Kansas slipped in.

Self, and the Jayhawks, found Mason III, and were able to bring him into the program. Given that he was not a McDonald’s All-American or a top-10 recruit, much was not expected of him. And his 5.5 points in 16.2 minutes per game during his freshman year did not foreshadow what was to come.

A possible Wooden Award winner had one offer from Towson. A perennial NC contender beat the bushes and found a player who developed into one of their all time greats.

Yep, and the transitive property clearly doesn't work, since we were up by 9 with 3 minutes left, then lost in OT. Funny game, this basketball, as you say.

Great story. He's probably the exception to the rule and if you're a top team you can afford to take a chance. You have other players who come in with big credentials and guys that will help the program for a few years. I'm hoping Mensah ends up being one of those guys, but nobody seems to high on him at the moment.
I'm sure we could find these type of players too, but we're usually looking for someone better. I don't think many of our roster guys are average college talent. These players should be doing things to compliment their game and not learning the basics. Maybe we'll see improvement in certain areas and find some shooters to get to another level. Being able to increase our scoring would be a good start because we might not rebound as well next year.
At least it was nice to feel good about RU BB again.

True enough, but those players with all that skill at Vermont and Albany were probably players like this: players with potential that were ignored by big time programs and developed on a smaller stage. Kansas saw potential and developed it in Mason's case. It's a rare story at that level, but it happens all the time outside of elite programs.

Pretty sure Mike Rice was recruiting him back then

Those schools have 4 year players-----with 4 years you have a shot to get better.

Brey uses the same formula at ND with a somewhat higher level kid.

We're usually a Junior /Senior team. and we aren't beating the A List schools for guys but he finds good players that fit his system and are patient.

John Battle was the 6th man on a great high school team, went to NBA.

I think CP will get there too. Once the roster starts to turnover a little and the pieces start to fill in, we'll be in that position. Because of all our needs, it should be easier to find guys, but we still have to beat other good teams along the way.

Okay, they have better shooters, who did not shoot so well yesterday and during their slump without Lindsay , they did not shoot very well either. So consistency is an issue. That was our biggest problem this year for anyone of our players. They have wings that are better than ours but Issa , Jonathon and Eugene are young compared to juniors, Lindsay and Law and hopefully will get there one day. I will take our guards and our front court against their front court in any comparison. The differential is not that great if there is one at all.
