1.The Yankee shortstop had yet to become Bucky @#$%^& Dent.

2.The first of three Popes that year was still hale and hearty.

3.The phrase "drinking the Kool Aid" had yet to enter the lexicon,as Jonestown did not happen until November.

4.Pete Rose had yet to begin his 44 game hitting streak, the best challenge to Joe D.

5.Best of all from a B1G perspective,Woody Hayes was still the coach at Ohio State, his firing not until late December.

Why is it always a big deal every year?

It's always the same story.

No one that cares or watches horses running tunes in to see is some pony can win the triple crown.

The horse doesn't win and some pony that didn't run the other two races wins.

Lots of people cry about it. Repeat next year!

If the track is wet, it's an advantage to American Pharoah. Seems to have stopped raining in NE NJ, probably even earlier at Belmont.

Will be at a Triple Crown party, should be fun to watch.

Belmont got rain this morning. Track May NOT Be Officially wet by post time but it's not going to a hard day surface

ABAP...Anybody but American Pharaoh. I like the fact there's been no TC winner since the late 70s. I'm tiring of the Preakness being little more than a walkover for the Derby winner. Hope that last 3/8ths of a mile eats Pharoah's lunch.

I'm all in on Frammento with a small exacta hedge....American Pharoa / Frammento

Great time, too, of 2:26.65. Not Secretariat great, but damn good, I think that is 6th fastest of all time.

I was hoping someone would win a Triple Crown in my lifetime! I'm at my 10-year high school reunion, and I watched it.

Nice call, Jay, LOL!

When Jerry Bailey was saying he was going to win I was a little more confident.

I was a senior in high school when Affirmed won - I broke away from a big picnic to go to my car and listen to the race on the radio (rooting for Alydar, who finally got Affirmed in the Travers, if I remember correctly). Secretariat had broken another long Triple Crown drought (the longest then, the second-longest now), and it was like a deluge for the next few years, with Seattle Slew and Affirmed coming so soon after.

I'm very happy American Pharaoh won today. It's nice to have a Triple Crown winner again.

How's that crow tasting today?

Anyway Pharoah ran a great race. His worst race of the year was the Derby. All others races he has been "much the best" (old racing term) Truly worthy of being a Triple Crown winner and by far the best horse in training today of any age.

If Baffert brings American Pharoah to Monmouth Park for the Haskell, watch for a possible Sell out crowd. It's amazing how a Triple Crown winning horse elicits so much excitement from the Sporting (and non sporting) public.

Heck, Secretariat is still talked about in reverential tones. His Belmont record will be held a long, long time.

To quote the late, great Chic Anderson, just moments after the Belmont ended in 1973, "That is a record that may stand forever!" BTW, by definition, forever is a loonnngggg time. :-)

If Pharoah participates in the Haskell, I would be shocked if it isn't a sellout.

I think Pharoah runs the Haskell, Travers and Breeders Cup Classic.

The story lines of the owner, trainer, and jockey could make the next Seabiscuit book and movie

If he runs the Haskell I'll eat my toe nails, don't care what they're saying today. Why on earth would you race the horse again when you're sitting on a fortune in stud fees ? Look what happened to Barbaro. You're going to risk all that for some 1M dollar rinky-dink race in Jersey ? Please

First the owner is first a gigantic horse race fan. 2. He will be insured handsomely.
The owner has already sold the breeding rights. So he is sitting on a known figure. He controls the horse through this year so why not.

Haskell a rinky dink race??? You know jack crap about horse racing!

I was fortunate to be at Belmont Park on Saturday. It was so loud when AP was running down the stretch I had to put my fingers in my ears.

I think AP runs in the Haskell. Get ready for a madhouse at Monmouth!

rinky dink compared to the three he just ran. Why don't you come down and tell me that to my face internet tough guy. I'll knock you into tomorrow. Better yet, go away like you did before (only to come back)

Monmouth Park and the Haskell are both better than the Pimlico. And it looks like you're the internet tough guy. If you're that offended with you lack of horse racing knowledge I'm at every home game.
If you stop making stupid statements people wont call you out.

Nice shot, Mike, it must have been an awesome experience!

I'm not as optimistic about Pharoah in the Haskell; he'd win in a cakewalk for an easy purse, but outside of connections taking a puncher's chance at him in the race, I think few would enter to run for the minor awards against AP, unless they just want to say "we finished 5th, 30 lengths behind the Triple Crown winner."

IMO, Dortmund's the likelier Baffert candidate based on front-end speed and a speed-favoring dirt course, although after the Preakness they might be cautious in the event of a wet track; obviously he didn't take to the mud in Pimlico, so maybe they leave him at Del Mar to rebuild confidence and run in dry, sunny conditions.

congrats to the Pharoah......but even he must bow down to the king

I was ten when I sat next to my dad to watch Secretariat win the Triple Crown. My uncle actually went to see Secretariat run and brought me back a souvenir. It meant the world to me when I was ten and kept it ever since. I would display it but I don't know how to post a picture here. I remember, Seattle Slew and Affirmed. I find Belmont racetrack to be beautiful. I even enjoy going to a worn out Pimlico racetrack. I pray that the city of Baltimore renovates Pimlico and does not move the Preakness to Laurel Racetrack.

I too went to Belmont on Saturday had a terrific time. Bill Clinton walked right by us in the Club House. Couldn't get real close because of the secret service but still exciting. I thought American Pharaoh and Victor Espinosa ran the perfect race and a very respectable time as well. I would also like to congratulate Frosted for running a spirited race. I'm betting on Baffert coming to the Haskell. He has done remarkably well at Monmouth Park. I usually get tickets but this year I bought my tickets ahead of time just in case. Can anyone envision a well rested Dortmond and Firing line going up against American Pharoah in Monmouth Park? If the weather cooperates we might get 60,000 fans.

I agree that Belmont is beautiful but Pimlico is a complete dump. And the city doesn't own it the Maryland Jockey Club owns it and they won't spend a penny as the MJC is now controlled by the Stronach Group who owns other tracks including Gulstream and Santa Anita. There is no reason to try and "fix" Pimlico as the only option is knocking it down and starting over and it's not worth it for one day. No one goes there otherwise as it's a very bad neighborhood.

The swell to move it to Laurel has been going on for a few years now but now with the Stronach Group publically acknowledging it appears it may happen sooner than later

It is considered one of the greatest athletic performances in sports history. IMO, it is the greatest. My dad used to show that video to his HS teams and tell them this is what we are trying to achieve. I saw a show once where they said Jack Nicklaus cried as he watched that performance...ultimate greatness.

I found it. Start at 7 mins and watch for a few minutes as they describe it:

Besides Secretariat's Belmont run, my second most memorable sports moment was Bob Beamon shattering, by a lot !, the World Record in the Long Jump at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. His reaction when he heard his distance announced is one I will never forget.
