Hugh O'Brian, who played the legendary lawman on TV in the 1950's,passed away today.

O'Brian did not get married until 2006,when he was 81.Smart man.

Brett Maverick was one of my favorite TV stars.

He was also a scratch golfer and was a regular player in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am for many years.

Is there a connection to Maverick for Hugh O'Brian?
I only remember James Garner as Brett and Jack Kelly as Bart.

Hugh O'Brian is also the answer to a John Wayne trivia question.
Anyone know the question?

I believe Roger Moore played the cousin Maverick to Bret and Bart. A great show. I loved the Wyatt Earp show as well.

Which actor is the last man shot/killed by a John Wayne character in The Duke's movie career? (The Shootist?)

When I think of Hugh O'Brian besides being a great actor he was a great humanitarian. His establishment of the HOBY foundation and his work towards helping kids with leadership workshops and scholarship opportunities had a bigger impact than anything he ever did in the world of entertainment.

Colbert I lived in San Diego for a long time and Nate Colbert was a local hero. His nickname was the mullion.A big powerful guy.

In the early 70's when I was a kid growing up in Elizabeth everybody was a Yankee or Met fan. I was a first baseman and one day I saw something in the paper about him. He went on to hit 38 hr's in 1970. I became a fan and in those pre-internet days I had to wait for the Thursday morning paper to find out what he did in the game Tuesday night.
In 73, when I was 17, I went into NY to the Biltmore Hotel and got his autograph in the lobby. He ended up giving me tickets to two games at Shea. I also got the autograph of a kid who the Padres just got about a month before straight out of college..... Dave Winfield.
Still have them somewhere.

Another indication that I am ancient: I remember watching the show with my father when I was *very* small. He would come home from work exhausted, and we would silently watch together.

Hugh O'Brian played Earp in the ABC-TV series “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” between 1955-61. Stacy Harris played John P. Clum, mayor of Tombstone, Arizona Territory in 22 of those episodes. Clum attended Rutgers in 1870 before winding up in the "Old West" and witnessing the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" and defended Earp initially to the local courts after the shootings.

Earp and Clum were friends for the rest of their lives and wound up living just 5 miles from each other (and the Los Angeles Colesium) in L.A. before Earp died in 1929 with John Clum as one of his pall bearers. Clum died three years later.

Hugh O'Brian also enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and proceeded to become the youngest drill instructor, (at age 17), in Marine Corps history. -And he certainly had some smarts, too. Before he got into acting, (which, interestingly enough, was purely by accident), he had intended to become an attorney and was going to study law at Yale.

I was a HOBY Ambassador, and then an adult volunteer for the organization for nearly a decade afterwards. The program was 'life-altering' for me, and -- I'm certain -- for thousands of other kids in New Jersey, and hundreds of thousands around the world.
