It's that wonderful time of year again. Forty-odd opportunities to watch college football games, particularly teams that we don't ordinarily get to watch during the year. But inevitably, the ScarletNation collective must complain about there being too many bowls. Oh no, don't tie me down to the couch and prop my eyelids open and force me to watch football!! The horrors!

There are too many bowl games. Doesn't mean I'm not going to watch, however, one has nothing to do with the other in my book.

Another complaining about complaining!o_O

I think there are too many and I'll watch less than 5 games in all likelihood. Not sure how that translates to me hating football or complaining that someone is forcing me to watch. Weird post.

I find the argument that there are too many bowl games to be a head scratcher. Too many for what? I'm guessing the teams involved are glad they are playing. Gives us games to watch we wouldn't have otherwise. Hard to see the downside here.

My reasoning is that 6-6 teams HARDLY have "earned" a post-season bid, let alone 5-7 ones getting them, which I find a complete disgrace.

I'll say the same thing I said last year, the same thing I said every year.

I don't think about bowl games in terms of who earns what.

They're extra football games. Period.

I'm watching a 6-6 UTSA team in a really good game of football against New Mexico. Why would we want to get rid of these games? Earned? Why not only have the top four teams in the national playoffs and get rid of all other bowls? It's good football, gets lower level teams good exposure and some money, and it's not like they're knocking some sort of save the children telethon off the air to show them.

I'm addicted to college football, and I'm in love with my disease...it is a long 8 months between the end of this season and the official start of the next!
I suffered from that same affliction that you describe.Enjoy it now because you may find,as I did, that after a large, lotta bunches of years, you are no longer addicted. Sometimes even bored.

Too many Bowls?

Let's see....a one week all expenses paid vacation to a destination they most likely have never been too, a chance to showcase their talents on national tv, extra weeks of practice as opposed to sitting in a dorm, not to mention all the gifts these kids get from the bowl sponsors ....I'd say you probably couldn't find a single kid playing in a Bowl who thinks there's too many

It's about the kids folks....good for them

So then give a bowl game to EVERY team. Every, single, shitty team. Even Rutgers, at 2-10, gets a "reward." Sound good? Sorry but at 5-7 you don't deserve to be "rewarded." F*cking participation trophy crap IMHO.

Again, I'm still gonna watch, and I'm going to enjoy, don't get me wrong.

I think you're taking offense to the fanbases walking around pumping their chests "Were going bowling"

In that respect I couldn't agree more....just cause a team goes bowling doesn't automatically mean their good

But again, it's an amazing opportunity for these kids

When RU sucks - and I think we can all agree on that, this year - my motivation to watch most other college football games and most bowl games is really low. It just reminds me too much of how disappointed I am in the team. I then tend to watch more pro games. Anyone else feel that way?

Don't worry, if some of these guys had their way, we would be playing in Boca Raton in front of 4,532 people the next time we go 2-10.

Nope, the pro game is more irrelevant to me every year.

Unless we're playing I have passing interest at best until the playoffs.
As a matter of fact, Road House or Die Hard will catch my attention more than watching the great majority of the games.
I don't miss Ranger games though!

As long as cities and sponsors benefit economically, there will be lots of bowls. It's all about the benjamins. 6-6 and 5-7 teams are only in bowls so there are enough teams.

Im very sorry to say that there are A LOT of football players who just want the season to end and don't really care all that much about going bowling. Especially on 5-7 and 6-6 teams. Seniors usually want to extend their career as long as possible, underclassmen want to be on christmas break and relax/party.

Lots of boring bowls - but I get to see Army and Hawaii in games this year and that's rare.

Did OP seriously make a preemptive thread complaining about other people complaining.

Trust me people, take advantage of the 1/2 price premium service and ditch these cancerous free board threads.

There's "not getting it," and then there's "bragging about not getting it."

Because Americans weren't watching enough television before.

I'm arguing with your rationale for 2x more bowls than merited, not what people do with their lives.
Then why don't you present some reasons for your argument rather than whining about people watching too much TV and linking outdated articles written by professional muckrakers? We're all ears. My argument is clear. It's good football and enjoyable to watch. Why would I want less of this?

Who's whining? I didn't start this thread.

And you're clearly not "all ears."

You're arguing it's "more better television." I'm saying that's a silly argument unless you're a TV executive or advertiser. Watch as much TV as you like down there. But if the argument you're using to justify the costs to schools and cities for 20 superfluous bowls is "more of the samersame stuff on the telly," then I'm comfortable dismissing you as a shill and a lemming. The bowl system itself is totally diluted. Used to be that even the least important of the 20-or-so games had some cachet; not the case now.

You dig it? Good for you. Enjoy your time in front of the TV. I think it sucks, and my argument is precisely the same now as it was in 2011.

Muckrakers? Yeah, you're obviously open to competing arguments.

My step by Step reaction to this thread:
1) What a stupid thread
2) I read a list of NCAA bowl games ranked by interest
3) I got real annoyed
4) I came back to this thread and coincidentally many R complaining about the same thing!

I'm sure I'm off a bit but:
1) There R 3 teams below .500 (Hawaii 6-7, Miss St 5-7, and North Texas 5-7 (didn't we beat them?)
2) There R 16!!! 6-6 teams? UT San Antonio, UCF, Southern Miss, Louisiana Lafayette, Central Michigan, Miami Ohio, Maryland, BC, NC State, Vandy, Wake, Baylor, Northwestern, Indiana, TCU and So. Alabama.

I'll be watching many episodes of "Alaskan Bush People" on the Discovery Channel in late December...

More than ready to listen to actual arguments. But when you complain that Americans are watching too much TV, that's whining. And then your authority is an article from a free weekly newspaper written by a guy who makes his living attacking people (or didn't you check?). Here is a more up to date report citing NCAA figures showing the colleges do quite well by the bowls. Easy to show you more. Not to mention the publicity colleges receive by appearing. They aren't forced to play; you aren't forced to watch.

Your argument didn't hold water in 2011 and it doesn't hold water today, even as the payouts increase.

And so you resort to ad hominem attacks.

Come with some facts and actual arguments.

I'm all ears.

Check the bowl records above-I'll be watching TV but not bowl games with 5-7 and 6-6 teams, Makes Temple and USF (didn't even know they had a winning record) look like top 10 teams.

Not so sure I'd trust my the NCAA for figures on bowl profitability. My experience is that the New Year's Day team (higher payouts) do well but in some cases that money is splt up in conference (B1G?). However lesser bowls oft cost the school financially (unsold ticket guarantees oft a big culprit then travel...). On the other hand as you say you have an intangible? benefit in terms of exposure and recruiting.

I get the same feeling about Christmas. Maybe it's because all of my close relatives are dead, my sister stole/ caused me $250,000 worth of damage and I'm being housed with no money in the bank and my car insurance is a week overdue with possibly no help and I'm out on the streets in 5 months permanently if no job. No concerts or Yankees since a year today (4th of July celebration the exception). Missed Bruce tour.

Bowl games-with the possible exception of the championship and my other alma mater-they games and teams just s*ck!

Seriously? You wouldn't trust NCAA figures? But they're quoted in ESPN, and they would never lie!:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Honestly, the reported numbers look very good, but who the hell knows if they're cooking the books. I don't think teams have to go to the lower level bowls (not sure about that). And if it isn't going to be a net win, why would they?

I love college football. The games today were played by kids who were playing their hearts out. Then I watch the pros and see more talent, but less effort.

I think Nuts has an argument that at 5-7, you haven't "earned" the right to go to a bowl, but where do you draw the line? Hell, we played four of the top eight teams in the nation this year. I think if we had gone 5-7 and gotten a bid, we should be entitled to go. I also think the notion that maybe some kids don't actually want to go, but it sure didn't seem like that today.

And you have to understand that I only get to see a very limited set of games during the year, so I'm not sated like you guys are!

ScarletNation's interest in bowl games is directly proportional to the football team's record - we play well, we can't get enough of football...we suck, please eliminate bowls.

LOL, really? It happens every year. Sucks. Sub-500 simply should not be "rewarded."
