Ohio State Postgame Thoughts

1) ohio state played a great game. They protected the ball, shot the ball great and played pretty solid D all around. They couldve beat a lot of teams today. Credit to them we ran into a good team.

2) Eugene is clearly feeling better. He had some nice bounce today and his footwork down low was extremely impressive. He was my MVP today.

3) Caleb needs more minutes. Kid is our most well rounded guard. He does pretty much everything well. He plays really good D, had 5 steals, hes long, can get into the lane and get to the bucket, can pull up and hit the mid range, his shot from 3 always looks smooth and is on line, and plays with an edge. Just a good all around player.

4) Peter kiss just slows down the flow on O and gets our D out of position. Unless hes catching and shooting and making them hes zero threat on O. He rarely if ever puts the ball on the floor, consistently gets shook on D and either gives up open shots or forces our D to rotate, and hes very tenative going for loose balls in traffic or battling for rebounds. He really should only play in absolute emergency scenarios. Ron and Caleb should eat up any of those minutes.

5) montez is in a funk. He was out of control and just wasnt there mentally today. Was taking very low % shots off balance and just did not have a good mental game. Once hes roped in, he will be fine.

Good post. We lost this game with everything you stated above, plus mediocre shooting including 31% from beyond the arc, while OSU shot out of their minds, hitting 46% beyond the 3 point line. They never shoot the ball that well. We were also atrocious from the FT line, but that's because Kiss, Doorson, and Myles have trouble shooting from the charity stripe.

We also had untimely TO's when we could get back in the game, and that includes Geo, who was really off today, and Mathis who has had a second game in which he has disappeared. But this is to be expected. This is what you get from a young team.

Kiss went 0-4 beyond the arc and what's troubling about him, those 4 shots were not contested. He was wide open. If he can't stick a few of those, there is no need to keep him on the floor playing so many minutes.

Eugene was a monster today.

One last point: I thought Pike should have stayed in the 2-3 zone more. I thought he left it too much in the second half. The few times we were in a zone that had difficulty beating it. Yes, they made a few nice outside shots when we were in the zone, but they also missed a lot too. I was disappointed that we didn't play more zone against them in the second half.

He said every time RU made a push and got within 5-6 points we'd break down with a bad shot or sloppy t/o, many leading to run out points for them. I figure OSU wins even without those blunders but game could've been closer down the stretch.

Fair point. Yeah harper didnt get a lot of offensive opportunities today. The 15 or so minutes that kiss got today shouldve all went to ron and caleb

I don't think Kiss is as big a liability on D as made out to be on this board, but agree his handle is suspect for a guard at this level. If he is not hitting open shots, he should be on the pine (still prefer him over Issa).

I agree. For the most part did not think Eugene was a ball hog today. Mathis and Geo need to find their own good shots, and Pikiell/staff need to help them do that.

Good observations. We had no answer for C. Wesson in the first half. He probably will never equal that shooting performance for the rest of the year. At one point he was 7-7 from the floor including 3-3 from three-point land. For a 6’-9”, 280 pound center that is quite a feat.

OSU took Geo out of his game with some great D and Mathis, Harper, and Kiss gave us very little. It is crucial that one of those three steps up and has a big game when Geo does not. McConnell was the only guard who came to play. And of course, Eugene, was terrific down low. Pretty good defense effort by RU; OSU was just better. And on offense, too many missed wide open looks, especially Kiss who had 2 wide-open threes in the first half, either one of which would’ve been huge to change momentum at the time.

I think point 1 was the big story, OSU played really well and hit 46% of their 3's, they probably beat anyone outside the Top 10 today and maybe some Top 10. I thought we played ok and liked that we didn't quit, but for us Baker and Mathis combined 4/19 and that is tough to overcome. Kiss has hit a rough patch with his open 3's but I think he is still adjusting to the athletic ability of this level and has his game off, I think he will come around and offer some productivity.

The team is very easy to defend when the ball doesn't move. There's no reason to not be in the game with Ohio State regardless of how many times the ball finds Eugene and it literally stops....it's one thing to try and make an offensive move and then a pass.

At the same time, it's not in any flow of offense and it's reactionary playing....and our bigs aren't finishers or skilled enough to always take advantage of some of these passes to get the plays made.

I am very happy Eugene is grinding it out and playing when he many others should be out with this type of injury. But we beat Ohio State the 1st time with ball movement and others getting opportunities to score, where they literally had no idea who was going to take a shot.

This is a delicate balance of player development and team improvement that has to continue to happen. It can't be the Eugene show 80% of the possessions, this roster has players who can score when they get touches consistently. Not going to win many more games with that high an amount of possessions going through Eugene.

We missed our 3's, our foul shots and we were sloppy in the 2nd half. Can't win with that combo.

Need more Caleb and Harper. Kiss and Thiam need to move to the bottom of the rotation. Mathis just throws the ball up when in the paint. I don't see him as a good finisher and he's a poor shooter from distance (never going to be effective with a knuckleball). He needs to put in more work than Caleb and Harper in the off-season.

Also going back to my caleb point, he leads the team in free throw % @bac2therac . He probably is the most all around complete player we have. Does a little bit of everything and does it pretty well. Hes a heckuva rebounder for a guard too

I saw it differently today. Euguene had 19 pts., shooting almost 70% from the floor. He dished out 6 assists to only 3 TOs and should have had at least a couple of more assists if our big men hit some chippies or our guards knocked down a couple of wide open 3s. I had no problem with the offense flowing through Omoruyi today against OSU’s defense. His numbers suggest it was a good approach and that Eugene was not the problem.

Yeah, I don’t know what game some others in this thread were watching. This is NOT the game to criticize the number of touches Eugene got. He was dishing the ball and scoring. And he only took 11 shots. Was unstoppable at times.

We didn’t lose the game because the offense ran through Eugene. We lost because we only hit 6 threes out of 19, shot 8-17 FTs, Wesson was unguardable, and OSU hit 13-28 from 3-pt range. Our offense actually functioned pretty well today, but we missed too many open looks, especially 0-4 by Kiss on wide open threes during critical junctures.

I’ll take 19 points (on an efficient 7-11), 8 rebounds, and 6 assists from our star forward any day of the week.

Hawk you usually offer good insight, but today you’re dead wrong about EO on offense. He was our only credible threat today and was effective at finding the open man when doubled. We lose by 20 without him today.

There's no gameplan that will win games against almost anyone left on our schedule, with Harper getting 1 shot attempt in 20 minutes, Shaq Carter getting 3 shots and very few touches. Feel free to disagree, it's not a formula for the others to get involved with ball movement.

But he can easily move the ball vs hanging onto it, he is an excellent/capable passer. It just isn't a formula most nights to have the ball stick to him, on so many possessions, where 2 players who can get into double figures, dont see the ball.

We lost today because our defense and intensity , especially defending the three point line was atrocious. Eugene was the only reason we were still in the game in the second half. He found other bigs for baskets as Shaq was 4-4 and I thought the other forwards Kiss and Harper did not cut enough to the hoop. He was also almost unstoppable on offense. If we would have gotten 2-3 stops in a row and someone,any one of Geo or Kiss hit a three or two , the game goes to the wire. There have been games that the ball sticks too much in Eugene’s hands. Today was not one of them.

Hawk you can double the length of your EO touches the ball diatribe, but you would just be doubling down on wrong. OSU D took our guys out of the action, it wasn’t because EO had too many touches. Nothing else was working when they did have their touches. MM was forcing again, GB couldn’t create or get to the rim, Junior was all perimeter, the game is too fast for Kiss, ... I think you know the game pretty well, so you know you take what the D gives you... they took most of our guys out of their game and gave us a bit more EO today. Maybe not so next game, but without EO’s touches today it’s over much earlier.

Shit if our bigs had hands and could finish he would have had 4 or more additional assists.

And I know you realize how many good passes a player has to make to get credit for an assist. Especially on a scoring-challenged team like ours. We lost this game for three major reasons - the inability to cover Caleb Wesson, we were brutal from the line, and Geo didn't show up. As far as Kiss goes, everyone liked him in our three consecutive wins when he hit big threes and all of his foul shots down the stretch. What have you done for me lately.

And I know you realize how many good passes a player has to make to get credit for an assist. Especially on a scoring-challenged team like ours. I disagree somewhat with NJH here, but I don't think he said Eugene had a bad game.

Good observations. We had no answer for C. Wesson in the first half. He probably will never equal that shooting performance for the rest of the year. At one point he was 7-7 from the floor including 3-3 from three-point land. For a 6’-9”, 280 pound center that is quite a feat.

OSU took Geo out of his game with some great D and Mathis, Harper, and Kiss gave us very little. It is crucial that one of those three steps up and has a big game when Geo does not. McConnell was the only guard who came to play. And of course, Eugene, was terrific down low. Pretty good defense effort by RU; OSU was just better. And on offense, too many missed wide open looks, especially Kiss who had 2 wide-open threes in the first half, either one of which would’ve been huge to change momentum at the time.
