Option offense without the option

Fellow sth next to me described our offense so concisely the other day vs. Iowa.

Not a Laviano hate thread, we're just handicapping ourselves running an option offense with a QB who is not an option.

Basically every play is an inside zone/inside power play to the RB as it is. Zero threat for the QB option to keep the ball. Defenses are zeroing in on this, that is why we cannot move the ball.

What has to happen for the staff to switch Laviano for a QB who's skillset is better suited for what we want to accomplish? There is already a buzz anytime anyone else receives the snap.

after watching this qb situation unfold, I think that laviano gets the nod each week because he demonstrates an ability to go through his progressions and will usually pick out the correct receiver on a given play, getting the ball to that receiver in a game situation is another matter. I don't believe the other qbs can do this yet. plus, he is one tough sob who gives his all.

When they let him throw the ball downfield more and he decides to run more he puts additional pressure on the D and opens things up a bit.

I am not at all saying he is a highly skilled QB but I think that when they use him right AND he is trying to make plays and not hold the ball he can be somewhat effective.

as the games have gone by..I am more inclined to think he is indeed the best we got. At least he is not throwing picks left and right. Hoping the light bulb turns on in time for Ill. game and back half of season.

Yes Ash has said as much. He said Laviano is best at managing the offense - knowing what the play is for, where players are supposed to be etc. Its not that the coaches are only looking at raw ability - which is what a lot of fans do, and then scratch their heads wondering "why does Ash think Laviano has better ability?". He doesn't think that - he wants a manager for the offense. A bad offense can need more managing than a good one

This deserves more attention.

So many times we don't even run WRs deep. We don't have to throw it to them.. just send them deep and take a DB with them.. make a safety have to make a choice. Whatever we are really doing will benefit.

And Martin needs to carry through with the run even if he doesn't have the ball. His lack of doing this hurts Laviano's already weak chances to run with the ball.

Throw deep.. throw to TEs.. throw on 1st half the time... or put in a real running QB. Now that Grant is sadly done for the season this next piece has littl euse.. but why throw it to Grant every time you set up that bubble screen? The DBs come crashing.. send then OUT after faking that once or twice.. maybe on the 1st play of the game when the D is all hyped up.

I watched Lamar Jackson last year at Louisville and it was obvious that he could run but had difficulty with the passing game. Petting let him get experience last year and with the additional work I n the spring and summer he now has a finished product. Ash needs to get oden or Allen in there so this process can happen at ru.

Jackson's first start came in week 5 after LVille started 1-3 with their only won against 1AA. In week five he threw for 103 yds. I would actually suggest Ash is handling Oden very similarly. Big difference is week 5 wasn't OSU.
