First CFP rankings will be out later tonight. (11/1/22) Of course only the last one matters and some issues will be settled on the field as the season progresses.

My top 6 as of now would be 1. Tenn 2. OSU 3. UGA 4. Michigan 5. TCU 6. Clemson

Very worthless right now with so many games to play.

If Tennessee beats Georgia this weekend , I see a strong scenario where 3 SEC teams make it. Alabama takes care of business and wins the SEC again .
Alabama is in. Tennessee is in with 1 loss in sec title game.
Defending champion Georgia with 1 loss is in

Preseason AP rankings and the rest are even more worthless yet we have them. At least these come out after more than half the season is played.

It’s good to have a gauge of where teams are as opposed to have one ranking just sprung on everyone at the end. Plus it’s just something for fans to talk about.

I don’t expect 3 SEC but I could see 2 for sure. If Tenn wins against UGA in Athens I think they’re just about a lock for the playoffs even if they lost the SEC champ game. The last three reg season games are Mizzou, USC, Vandy so they should win those. Wins over Alabama, LSU, UGA, UK probably is enough to carry them even in a SEC champ game loss as long as it’s not a big blowout and who knows maybe even that could be overcome.

I’ll put Clemson 7. They’re always so close to losing so I can’t put them in my top 6.

Assuming that scenario alabama wins the sec championship game , the tide is gonna be in the playoff . What do you do with a one loss defending champ Georgia ?? I think they’re in , along with Ohio state-Michigan winner (assuming we don’t beat Michigan Saturday 😂)

It depends on what happens elsewhere but I think it would be similar to all that needed to happen for Cincy to get in last year. To get 3 SEC teams in you need a lot of help from elsewhere imo. 2 is very possible but 3 needs a lot of outside help because I think the committee will look for any reason to avoid it.

Yes I think they will…but a one loss defending champion is certainly a strong candidate . But this is all speculation as many games to play.

THere is MACtion tonight. Are you starting the weekly games thread? Cole Snyder on at 7:30 ESPN2 😎

UGA 1
Tenn 2
OSU 3
Mich 4
Bama 5
TCU 6

Michigan couldn't dominate Maryland at home.
TCU almost lost to Kansas, OK State, KSU, and WVU.
Bama almost lost to Texas and A&M.

Sneak peak to how a 12 team playoff would play out:

Will be so exciting (??) to have #25 UCF in the CFP as the 12th seed over literally dozens of better teams.

Let's check their resume:
6-2 (3-1 AAC)
Got blown out 34-13 by East Carolina 2 weeks ago
Oh they did put up 70 on Temple (that legit Temple D....)

Looks like a CFP resume to me......
This top 6 conference champs is the epitome of "participation trophy culture".

@mildone #TheWorstNick
Can I make it work over here too?

Actually it would be #19 Tulane as of now

Oh good point. My bad.

The team with 1 P5 win (Kansas State) and lost to Southern Miss.
Much better resume 😉
If they expand it to 68 like basketball , we will have good shot some years . Might have to replace wagner though

Even if it was UCF, I have no issue with it. Need participation from the lower ranks and lower status schools. It’s good for the sport and it’s not so overbearing just for 1 team that might not be in the top 12 to get in. Some years they will be in the top 12 and some they won’t.

Expanded playoffs is one of the few mechanisms for teams lower down the totem pole to lift their station on the CFB landscape.

As much I’m a proponent for CFP expansion, I’m not as big a proponent of NCAA tourney expansion beyond where it is because there’s already plenty of opportunity for schools in MBB.

Current 12-team playoff.

Byes - Tenn, OSU, Clemson, TCU

Oregon/USC winner vs Tennessee
Georgia/Tulane winner vs TCU
Michigan/Ole Miss winner vs Clemson
LSU/Alabama winner vs Ohio State

SEC gets five teams, Big 12 and Pac 12 two each. However, the SEC schools will knock each other off. I doubt the SEC would end up with more than three teams after the conference championships have concluded.

I think all the undefeated teams control their own destiny. Dont see any of them, even TCU, not getting in if they stay undefeated. Georgia and Tennessee play each other as well as Ohio State and Michigan. I think it would be great to have four undefeated teams from four different conferences.

2nd CFP rankings out tonight. (11/8/22)

My current top 6:

1. UGA 2. OSU 3. Michigan 4. Tenn 5. TCU 6. Oregon

Losses in the SEC don’t count if they are to other SEC teams, even 27 point losses. No way 2 loss LSU should be ahead of 1 loss USC ( 1 point loss to Utah).
I agree and I'm a fan of LSU.... after Rutgers and Navy.

TCU, KSU, Utah, Oregon St, Tulane, UCF, South Carolina, Miss St, NC St…nice job to make just about the final rankings for the season. One of the AAC teams could fall out in the final ranking.

The beauty of that ranking is that OSU could move into the top four with a loss by the other 3 non Big Ten lose

USC sneakin around

"Georgia, Michigan, TCU and USC are all poised to make the College Football Playoff with wins in their conference championship games this weekend after the selection committee unveiled its penultimate rankings on Tuesday."

I think UGA, Michigan and TCU are in no matter what. Maybe if TCU were to be blown out they might get bumped but a decent loss to a top 10 KSU and I think they’re okay. Their SOS is higher than all of them. IMO OSU needs USC to lose to get in.

I don't. At all. They are all prohibited favorites. The stigma losing at this point knocks them out.
