OT: Anchor Brewing ceases production.

So I take it that their Old Potrero rye whiskey brand was not included in this and is owned by somebody else.

That’s tremendous news. Ulukaya knows how what it takes to run and grow niche businesses. Better result than I could have ever imagined.
I saw a 60 minutes segment a few years ago about how he founded Chobani....quite the rags to riches story.

Will be curious to see how he rejuvenates Anchor Brewing.

Sounds like good news. Hope it works out that way.

The funny thing is that Yuengling Lager has only been around since 1987. Prior to that its flackship was Yuengling Premium which is more like a Pilsner. However it took no time for the Lager to become the big thing.
I don't think that's accurate. In 1987 they "brought back" the lager. The founder was a German and I seriously doubt he started brewing an ale. As a German he must have started with a lager. I know they dug caverns underground to allow them to brew year round before refrigeration.

They never get credit but they brewed the first IPA after prohibition. Most breweries gave up on that style
And thank the lord they did. IPA sucks. IPA drinkers are being propagandized because IPAs are easier to brew. IPAs are the Merlot of the Beer world.

They had the Premium before the Lager

I'm not a big time IPA fan so go yell on Untapped. I'm a Belgium Ale and German Lagers (many different, delicious styles) guy.
I shall remove the YOU.. I apologize. Assumed. If people would stop buying and drinking that crap maybe all these breweries would work harder and produce some good beers and proper ales.

It is still very hot.. hit up weissbier and hefeweizen and, of course pilsners and lagers! The time for fall's malty stuff will be here soon enough. It is never time for IPA unless, of course, you are stuck in INDIA or some other place incapable of properly brewing beer.

PS.. just having fun.. really ain't that much of a beer snob.. but I truly hate IPAs and very much dislike seeing them crowding out the taps at places forcing me to go to bottles for a reasonable selection.

I've loved IPA's since I first tried Arrogant Bastard(not a true IPA but pretty close) 20 years ago.

But after drinking nothing but IPA's for 10-15 years, I am looking for variety these days.

The watermelon beer's are enjoyable in the summer months. Hell or high watermelon probably my favorite.

San Diego is IPA heaven. Seeing a lot of the watermelon and other fruity beers making their way in. I’m all for it

For you new fruit-fans, trust the Germans.. SCHOFFERHOFER HAPPY PACK 12-pack
(I think the cans are superior to bottles in this case)

There is plenty of variety at the local shops and breweries to choose from. To each their own, but NEIPA popularity speaks for itself and that's why theres so much of it.

Especially with all the Octoberfests hitting the shelves in the last few weeks.
I've have them all in the store right now. If you are looking for a "new" Oktoberfest beer I highly recommend this years Sierra Nevada collaboration with Brauerei Gutmann. It's the style that is made in Munich, not the Marzen which is only prevalent in the US.

You pay a lot of money for just a 2.5% ABV quasi beer.
If you have to put fruit in your beer to make it taste good maybe your drinking the wrong beer.
It is good stuff.. especially in hot weather.. regardless of whether other non-fruity beer also tastes good. Expand your horizons. Malt liquor is high in alcohol.. is it good beer?

Malt liquor?? What are you talking about? Do you know that no longer applies. It was a US old law.

I always get an image of Colt .45 and it's ilk.
Very old rule. All beer above 5% had to be marked as malt liquor only in the US. That is no longer the case as you see 8% IPAs with no malt liquor designation.
Some of the greatest beers in the world are well above 5% ABV. The highest ranked beer, Westvleteren 12, has a 10% ABV.

Old rule doesn't change the point. you all know what I mean when I said malt liquor... but I guess, yes, there are some good high ABV beers too.. like some Belgian ales. I should have been more specific but the point is the 2.5% ABV does not mean it is not a good beer and if it were 5% ABV it wouldn't necessarily make it any better or suddenly become worthy of consideration. If ABV is what you crave, why during beer? Just make all your beer a "bomb" or a "dropped shot" or move on to some other alcohol of choice.

Besides all that.. I was responding to posters already talking about fruit beers.

Well you certainly missed my point! You're paying a lot for a low ABV was my point.
Technically it's not a beer, doesn't abide by the German Reinheitsgebot or purity law.
Why don't you just have a glass of juice?

Yup, this partly explains how ipas became so popular. Voodoo ranger for example tastes great but isnt a true IPA because of the added fruit flavors.

You have not tried it, have you? You wouldn't, right? Its 2.5% ABV after all.

I have tried it. You need to love grapefruit. I don't that much. It's not considered a beer it's a radler. The ABV has nothing to do with me enjoying a beer. And since that's not a beer it doesn't even count. I do love wheat beers (witbier, white, hefeweizens) but not Blue Moon which maybe the worst I've wheat beer I've ever had. Too much orange.
Session sours are great beers with lower alcohol.
And you still don't get it. My point is you are paying for something that is 50% beer and 50% juice but paying the full beer price.

Already had some Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier. I am sure you have too.

Is it good, man?

Sorry, couldnt help it. Follow up to the "snow man" convo from last night's NYY game.

To each their own. You are not the majority in this respect,
In the 19.2 can category at my store Dale's Pale Ale leads the pack followed by Victory's Sour Monkey. VDR Juice Force was a big seller when it first came out but has fallen to hardly selling anymore. New Belgium has lost their identity.

Voodoo ranger could be the worst beer I have ever tasted. Cousin brought to my bbq only beer that was left in the cooler. I laughed because after he tasted the others we had he didn’t touch that crap. Of the 24 he brought something like 18-20 were left.
