Not a pharmacist but a former wrestler. Use spray tinactin or Lamisil or lotrimin cream.

Went that route. No go and as it got worse caused some hair to fall out. If it persists too long the hair won't grow back. He's only 7 so want to take all precautions.

Sorry to hear that. There are several antifungal pills available.
