OT: Anybody ever used a professional resume service?

Some recruiters and companies are just stupid. Asking for a photo breaks just about every law know to HR and equal opportunity but...in some positions it is important to know how someone presets themselves. Which is why the better agencies always ask for a Skype type interview which IS legal and does the same thing.
The other things to watch for us any company asking for W2’s or references before they make you an offer. Even on applications that may be required, answer that references can be provided upon request, don’t ever give them before an offer. And never give previous W2’s or paychecks ever.
When I first replied to this recruiter I was interested in the job she asked me to reply that "I confirm with $$$/per hr on w2 all inclusive with (contractor company's name)"

I had no clue what she asked me to do that.

I used to get recruiters from an offshore company every week with qualified opportunities in which they asked me to confirm the base pay we discussed. Not one single time did it go to the next step.
I did get a recruiter that connected me with my current company. Perfect fit. It did come through LinkedIn

I might try to use LinkedIn more, I've been getting a ton of calls from recruiters since I updated my resume on Monster but none of them really seem to take the time to see if I'm a good fit, it's annoying.

LinkedIn doesn't appear to be much better on that front.

I used TopResume.com

they have a sister service for interview skills too. I didn't opt for that service so don't know how well it works

they helped me modernize my resume and improved my linkedin profile

Not sure it has helped me in the job search but can guarantee I am getting more recruiter interviews and more views on my linkedin page

I would suggest using a professional service, especially if they have staff that is in the recruiting industry. They try to market you in a way to benefit you and know what keywords employers look for in various talent search websites.

Even someone happy in a job should update their resume every few years to be fresh just in case.
I would suggest updating the resume annually, if not more frequently if you do a lot of project based work. Never know when an opportunity pops up

I filled out an application online for a conservative financial company and they had questions like:
- have you ever been unemployed for more than 3 months
- have you ever had a bankruptcy
- have you ever been dismissed from a job

while there may be some relevance it sets a bad tone up front especially when the company will run a background check and do a credit report

it is common for companies to do layoffs nowadays when a business unit is under performing which means decent employees may be out of work over 3 months. That can also lead to temporary financial difficulty.
I have seen some of those questions too and asking if you were ever dismissed from a job is kind of funny. In what world as a candidate would you ever say yes?
Previous employers are only allowed to give start/end dates and title.
I see people answer yes all of the time.

It was better going back several years when the platform was less social media and more network building, at a time when Monster and others had long since become cyber blackholes, but some portion of the LinkedIn universe has gradually become the Monster of a decade ago.
Any other recommendations for job searches?

Same thing going on at my company—large FinTech. It is pretty sad that the world doesn’t just have the view of taking the best candidate for the job.

I mean that is how all the professional sports teams do it.

Yeah out of control in fintech space. Tough to hire the right person.

I also suggest tailoring your resume towards your next job interest. Have more than one basic resume, have several.

IOW's if you have multiple sellable/marketable talents/experience. Create the resume and make it have a relevant list of your talents for this next job.

I always had 3 resumes prepared and would still make minor changes depending on the specific position. Your job search will be a job within itself

I wouldn't discount your hourly rate...if you wanted to go do something somewhere else, ppl in the industry talk. Hey, why is #'s charging me $400/hr when he's only charging you $150/hr?
The ability to only work 10 hours a week at my former company, partly in my previous role, which will be very easy for me, is a huge perk and is why I'm ok to accept a lower hourly rate than I would if I were going to do consulting full time (and if I decide to do consulting, they won't know what I made at Merck, which technically isn't a consulting gig, like they would have). It's just enough work to keep me engaged in the industry and to make some extra spending money, while still allowing me a large amount of "retirement" time to do what I want. Also, I'm not going to find any serious consulting gig for 10 hours a week.

I had the fortune (or misfortune depending on your perspective, lol) of never looking for a job in my entire life (not counting high school jobs), so while I kept my cv up to date every few years, I never really used it. As an undergrad at RU, a prof liked my classwork and asked me to work each summer for decent college student pay (close to industry intern levels) doing research for him. Then during my 5 years in grad school (same prof became my main PhD advisor) we got free tuition and enough of a stipend to live off of and have some fun (was around $12K per year in the late 80s). And finally, a mid-level manager from Merck (who was the heir apparent to be head of the chem eng'g R&D dept. I ended up in) was doing the 2-year doctoral program (after getting the MS part time) with the same advisor and we became good friends. So when I finished up in 1989, he set me up with a somewhat perfunctory interview and they hired me. His recommendation to hire me was almost enough on its own. Almost 31 years later I retired, last Thanksgiving.
