OT: B1G Cord-Cutting News - YouTube offers new monthly Live TV service $35/month

Investigating all the options, for a sports fan who wants BTN, the full complement of ESPNs (ESPN, ESPN, ESPNews, ESPNU) for college football, SNY for Mets, YES for Yankees, Fox Sports 1 and CBS Sports Network, seems going with a cable company (in my case Cablevision/Optimum) for 2 years, dumping them and switching to FIOS, rinsing/repeating is the best option.

High speed internet alone is at least $65/month through Optimum or FIOS.

YouTube package is $35/month, bringing total to $100/month.

Triple Play on FIOS for 2 year deal with a sports package for $90/month.

Cablevision/Optimum is $100/month on a 2 year deal.

There does not seem to be a less expensive option than $90-100/month?

You are leaving out all the new taxes and surcharges you would pay through FIOS and Cablevision/Optimum.

When I had cable I was paying:
Broadcast TV Surcharge
Sports Programming Surcharge
Entertainment Networks Surcharge

MLB TV would be worthless to a Mets or Yankees fan who only wanted to watch Mets or Yankees games if they lived in Central/Northern NJ, correct?

As far as I know local market gets blacked out.

Or for about 5 dollars a month, you can purchase a VPN..which blocks the location of your IP address. Thus, MLB tv won't know your "local" team, so nothing blacked out. Totally legal as well.

Thus,

I cut the cord recently and don't regret it one bit.

Went with PS vue which is the best for sports imo..get everything I need but MSG.

If you're in the NYC area, the FOX SPORTS GO app has games on YES Network, including Yankees, Nets, NYCFC. Don't know if the issues between Comcast and YES is still ongoing this year or not.

NBC SPORTS APP allegedly will air Mets games on its app starting this season. But I haven't seen any off their Spring Training games yet

Don't think you will get the Mets game unless you are an "authenticated SNY subscriber" by having SNY through Cable TV or DIRECT TV, which are the only services I am aware of that have SNY.

https://www.sny.tv/press-releases/n...of-mets-baseball-during-2017-season/214875498

"The service, available to authenticated SNY subscribers at no additional cost, will deliver baseball's most-watched local broadcast and award-winning pre- and post-game programs streamed at SNY.tv and on the NBC Sports app."

https://www.sny.tv/info/live-faq

Q: How can I stream Mets games?

A: If you are an SNY subscriber via a participating video provider, and reside in an area where you are able to view in-market Mets games on SNY, you will be able to access content on SNY.tv and the NBC Sports app (TV Everywhere). If your provider has not yet entered into an agreement with SNY to make TV Everywhere available, you will not be able to authenticate and stream the content. Please call your participating provider if you are not able to access the stream of the game via SNY.tv on PCs or the NBC Sports app.
Q: How do I verify/authenticate my video provider account?

A: If you are an SNY subscriber via a participating video provider, when prompted, select your video provider from the drop-down menu. You will then be asked to enter your username and password for your provider, similar to when you pay your bill online. Don't forget to check "remember me" so you don't have to log in again. If you don't have an online account with your video provider, or can't remember your username and password, please contact your video provider to learn more. If you already have a username and password from your video provider, you will not need to create a new account. If you have not previously registered an account with your video provider, you will need to do so with a valid email address. Please contact your video provider to learn more.

SNY? BTN? All ESPN Channels?

No SNY, but I'm a yankee fan. It has YES and MLB network. As well as NBC Sports.

All ESPN channels..maybe not classic, but don't care about that. ESPN, ESPNU, ESPNews and ESPN2. Also has NFL network, BTN plus 4 "alternate" BTN feeds, SEC net, NBAtv, golf channel and Bien sports. Also has FS1 and FS2 and all Turner nets for NCAA tourney.

Also has all the major local channels in NY market..2 4 5 7.

really need a true a la carte service. Still a lot of unused channels in that package like disney and freeform. wonder if local option will have YES and SNY and MSG, which are must haves for local sports fans.

WHAT??

Ya GOTTA have Freeform. How else can you watch "Ten Things I Hate About You" four times a day?

You're lying.

In 1999 you were finding illegal online streams of RU football and basketball games that were televised on MSG Network or FSNY (remember that channel)? You're so full of crap.

YouTube TV has launched in the NYC area, Free 1-month trial.

https://tv.youtube.com/welcome/
This may be the better option since Youtube TV has most of the sports channels we want (with SNY left off for now). Plus we can watch its channels off the phone, tablet, TV, Chromecast without wifi (other than needing wifi for the initial Chromecast setup).

Verizon screwed up-in my favor!

I have two outlets. They left all the old news channels-and a lot of everything else-on one set, while giving me the new channels on the other. They increased my internet speed to 50/50 while keeping the price the same.So I'll stick with them unless they eliminate the discounts in 2019.

It is by far the best sports option right now. I thought about the delima of not having YES and SNY etc... , but I could live with just watching the select few games on UPN, PIX, FOX, NBC, ESPN. I really don't have time to keep up with baseball on a daily basis. As of now YouTubeTV will be my go to for 4 months of college football though.

Then again borrow an account from a relative (or however you want to state that lol) so you can get Mets SNY games on NBC Sports app and the Yankees YES games on FOX Sports Go app through Google Chromecast. I also believe you can cast MSG games on MSG Go from your phone onto Chromecast as well.

Well, my first small step at cord cutting - has mostly ended in failure....

while I didn't cancel my DirectTV, it did just recently try several "off-air" antennas to see what's-what. Unfortunately, due to my HOA - I can't install anything on my roof - so I tried several "in-house" antennas.

For the most part - reception was very spotty with a lot of "pixellation" on screen.

While it was interesting to see the "alternate" channels that might have been available (e.g., CBS Decades, Antenna TV, etc..) given the specifics of my house location and other factors... it will be a bit longer for me to cut-the-cord.

I will be trying either Roku or Firestick on a couple TVs next to see what those "free options" really look like.....

AND BTW, CAN MLB, NBA, NHL CAN GET RID OF THE ARCHAIC BLACKOUT RULES ONCE AND FOR ALL????? MLB Network, NHL Network would be PERFECT on TV and on phone/tablet/computer. But with the blackout rules, you can't watch your home team from the home area. 75% of the time, what's the freaking point if you can't watch the Mets or Yankees in NY area, Phillies in Philly area, and so on.

With PS Vue, you can watch SNY on the NBC Sports app & have access to these TV Everywhere apps:

Can I use my PlayStation™Vue account to authenticate with "TV Everywhere" applications?
Absolutely. Over 50 of our network partners have applications or websites through which you can watch live TV and on demand programming. While these apps and sites are completely separate from PlayStation™Vue, they can be used at no additional cost with your PlayStation™Vue subscription.

To authenticate and gain access, you will need a subscription to a PlayStation™Vue package that includes the channel whose content you are looking to access.

You can access the below list of apps or websites with your PlayStation™Network credentials. When you download each app, simply look for the PlayStation™Vue logo or drop down option on the app’s log-in screen. Once at the log-in screen, type in your credentials and you’re in. Most apps can be downloaded from Google Play and the iTunes store.

For you OTA guys.. Tivo just had a deal on the last-generation 500GB Roamio for OTA (no subscription needed) for $199. Its over now but they are likely to repeat it. Don't know what the Youtube TV DVR capability/on-demand is for broadcast shows on networks you can get OTA.. but I do know that finding shows on Xfinity and Netflix always means some of those shows are only on Hulu or someplace else that I do not subscript to...have a DVR for OTA might help.. and with sports on broadcast networks too.. as in some cases, the broadcast fed is a better image than what the cable companies give you. Oh, and from what I understand, it is fairly easy to replace a hard drive in that Tivo with a bigger one.

According to the You Tube website, their DVR setup is cloud based so they have unlimited storage capacity.

I'm having a hard time justifying not trying this service out if I can save 70-80 dollars a month. Once I clear off my DirecTV DVR, I might be trying this out.

I cut the cord a few months ago. If you want OTA and stations like CNN, AHC, MSNBC, Nat Geo, Discovery etc look at PlayStation Vue and SlingTV.
With those you don't have to have a HD antenna.
I'm in Mercer County and get NYC tv stations CBS, NBC, ABC. With antennae I only got Philly and local PBS stations, though that was with a Mohu leaf. I was going to get an external antenna, but I'm happy with PS Vue.

Ps Vue and SlingTV are monthy subscription plans that give you access to "cable" stations plus OTA for much less than you pay for a cable TV subscription.

I dropped phone and TV from Verizon and just kept internet service. I purchased Amazon Firestick, added Terrarium TV app, subscribed to PS Vue and have Ooma Telo for free VOIP telephone.

With this setup get all the live stations I need, all the TV shows and movies I want for 1/2 price of the Fios Triple option. I run my home security system off mobile. I pay 1/2 what I was paying for Fios.

It take very little up front investment. For me 3 Firesticks ($120) to replace cable boxes, Ooma Telo ($89) - which I use with my existing phones. So far I'm happy.

PS vue for sports and channel channels, NetFlix for movies and shows and other things. Also if you have Amazon Prime you also get even more movies and shows.

That is more than enough for most people and all that I could ever want besides HBO (just for GOT)

If you have a PS4 you can run all three and more.

Some TVs have these apps built in or you can even download more apps for them.

If you don't, a Amazon Fire stick is very affordable. about $40, Black Friday sales can nab you one for $30 or less.

Actually internet service will be your biggest bill but even with all of that most people will save over $60 a month.

Skip Netflix and it will be over $70 a month or $840 per year give or take a few dollars.

That is real savings.

I haven't done it yet since I am still researching this stuff, but it will happen soon. I am slow to do these things... slower than most, LOL.

HBO NOW is $14.99 a month which is more than Netflix but I only need HBO for Game of Thrones which will end next year. So after this GOT season I will cut the cord at last.

Right before next year's season starts, I will get a HBO NOW sub for the season, the 1st month is free and you can cancel whenever you wish.

Content providers don't want it, but some like CBS have their own video streaming subscription service (CBS All Access) just in case & to offset lost revenues & prepare for the future, but I don't think true a la carte is coming as soon as people want & when it comes, it likely won't be as cheap as people want once you add up all the different costs. SNY hasn't been available streaming anywhere, but just announced last month that Mets games (& pre & post game shows) will finally be available to stream on sny.tv & the NBC Sports app using a TV Anywhere login from your cable provider.

How much do you save a year & is it worth the hassle & inconvenience of constantly switching inputs on your TV, not having an on screen channel guide, not having a DVR or being able to pause, rewind, FFWD live TV, & having to sign up & drop BTN?

I think you are misinformed about the costs (billions) to build out fiber networks. There's a reason Google Fiber isn't everywhere, has slowed down deployments & is exploring & using alternatives to digging trenches in cities. Plus the costs to manage & maintain these fiber & content delivery networks.

Also, based on your example of cobbled together services, there doesn't appear to be much of a cost saving. Is it worth the hassle & inconvenience of constantly switching inputs on your TV, not having an on screen channel guide, not having a DVR or being able to pause, rewind, FFWD live TV, & managing a ton of other standalone apps?

Does anyone know if Mets games can be watched through the NBC Sports Network available through YouTube TV or PS Vue? Or are Mets games on SNY only available through the NBC Sports App?
On the NBCSN page, they do not list YouTubeTV or PS Vue as a provider to gain access to the App.

Mets games aren't available thru Vue (since they are on SNY and PIX 11) both of which Vue doesn't have.

I'd assume B/C Vue doesn't offer Mets games, you won't be able to view them on NBC app if u put Vue in as your provider.

One thing is for certain, cable is out of control. I pay $160 per month for almost nothing. It's a real shame.

Not sure if you really answered the question (or perhaps you did).

So you can't access SNY via the NBC Sports Network offered by YouTubeTV or PS Vue--that's because your "TV provider" must offer SNY in order for you to have access through the NBC Sports Network App?

NBC sports network is different than the NBC sports network app.

Because vue has the NBC sports network but not SNY, when u open the app and put in Vue as your provider, you will be able to watch NBC sports network and its offerings but not SNY nor it's offerings. Thus, no mets.

The reason these apps tell U to put in your provider is to know if your provider offers what u are trying to watch. Vue doesn't offer SNY.

Got it. Thank you for answering twice. It's odd that BTN, which appears to be a cable stalwart, is aligned with YouTubeTV and PS Vue, but not SNY.

I'd think b/c BTN is more of a national network as SNY is just a regional network...that's gonna be the case. More providers will offer that.

One legal workaround to watch Mets games is to download the MLB.tv app (think it's 100 for the year, probably cheaper now since almost halfway thru season). But if u r in NY area, games will be blacked out. Thus, you can download a VPN, some are free, others 3 or 4 a month, and that will recognize your IP address as somewhere different then NY/NJ..thus Mets games won't be blacked out.

Don't know if this would answer their question about SNY on NBC Sports App but I have the Amazon Fire Stick and I can watch SNY ON the NBCS app as well as the YES Network on the Fox Sports Go app. Unfortunately no BTN app for the Fire Stick.
