I know awhile ago someone posted an online site to buy car tires at a great price. Can't find it now (does the search function even work yet?) - wife needs four new tires for her 2006 Ford Explorer, which is still running strong...

2 places I've bought tires from: discounttiredirect.com and tirerack.com. I will buy from the former first as they usually have better prices.

Simpletire.com

But make sure you calculate the total price including installation and delivery.

Thanks - compared tirerack with costco - so far costco cheaper for the same tire....

Will check the other two tonight...

Absolutely true!

Start with figuring out what tires you find to be acceptable - use the www.tirerack.com selection tools - or - www.discounttire.com -(don't forget shipping charges)
there will likely be a couple of ones that are real high volume sellers - so - check out
what BJ's & Costco carry & what they charge for matching tires, mount & balance, valve stems etc.
- also check out a Ford Dealer that you trust - Ford (like many car companies) has been trying to push the tire business & may price match against the discounters.
- don't forget your local mechanic (if you have a good one) - our guy is a real straight shooter - he says he can be competitive on the high volume stuff - just asks for a chance to give me a price - sometimes he beats them all & sometimes he can't come close - if I use Tirerack I have the tires shipped to his garage & he puts them on

You mentioned the tires are for your wife's car...I would buy from COSTCO...as they fill them with nitrogen for free, which means your wife will almost never have to check tire pressure before the free tire rotation come 7,000 miles later.

All COSTCO does is tires and they do them well (they get very good pricing since they deal with only Michelin,
BFGoodrich and Bridgestone).

Again, beware of added costs by many tire places...and whatever you do, get nitrogen fill...as your wife's tires will wear more even (all 4 will be at same pressure for thousands of miles), and then get them rotated RELIGIOUSLY at 7,000-7,500 miles (free again at COSTCO), as that combo (nitrogen and rotation), you will probably get an extra 20,000-30,000 miles out of your tire compared to air filled and tires not rotated on a regular basis (maybe because it costs at some other joints).

Challenge with buying tires online and shipping them to someone to put them on, many times those auto places do not guarantee the tire....whereas all COSTCO's guarantee your purchase, wherever you are.

Forgot to check what tire size she currently has on the car...... Thanks for all the input so far! It's also nice that COSTCO posts their tire prices online so I can compare....

Ive used Tirerack.com for at least the last 4 sets I've purchased. Don't go to a tire shop for install either, they will charge as much as $35-40 apiece to mount and balance. I went to a couple local mechanic shops, and the guy I use now only charges $20 apiece. \

If you have an SUV, its not a big deal, but for awhile when I only had a car, I had the tires shipped directly to his shop like Rumba said above. I was nervous the first time, but it worked great.

If you use tirerack or some other online retailer make sure you use a certified installer for the tire manufacturer you are buying. I made the mistake of not doing that and when I had problems with all 4 tires (sidewall bubbles - Contintental - would not recommend them) it was a major PIA to straighten it out.

I recently used tirebuyer.com and was happy with the outcome.
