We’re an IMPACT Tight End Away from winning the National Championship

It all starts up front, and we might have the best OL in the country, with our OL last year leading the way for the Big Tens leading rusher and our OL allowing the fewest sacks. With four of five starters returning and another year stronger, I expect our OL to improve upon last years performance. Key is Suttons knee, which clearly wasn’t fully healed last year, but should be better next year. Despite his limitations, he gave many a Miami defender a ride and made them look like they were playing on roller skates.

Quarterbacks will throw at least 55% this year, and I honestly don’t care who it is. Surace is the most talented quarterback on the roster, but he may need to hold a clipboard for a year, which isn’t the worst thing. Athan and Gavin are competing.

Our running attack is as good as any, with the Big Tens leading rusher returning and Sam Brown backing up. And a plethora of running backs behind them, biding their time.

Big difference in talent level in the WR Corp. our starters are arguably three WR1 caliber receivers who will significantly bolster our WR productivity. Miller, Brantley, and Strong could be as good as any WR Corp in the nation. Dremels consistency will be better appreciated with better Quarterback play.

Depth has significantly improved. Toure redshirted last year but flashed in the bowl game, and has NFL potential.

Korey Duff is a future All American, but will spend this year acclimating to this level and growing into his body. His best position might be Flex Tight End, but no matter where he plays this year, he is going to be a matchup nightmare. Very excited about Ben Black, who brings blazing 4.37 speed to the table. Braithwaite is waiting in the wings to impact. The Corp has gone from lacking talent to having a plethora of talent. This is where I think Rutgers Football will show its biggest improvement. Last year, the receiving game struggled. This year, I expect the receiving game to take a big step up.

We all know tight end is the biggest question mark. The team seems to be banking on Fletcher, whose effectiveness is unknown, so it’ll be a wait and see situation. Konopka has size and has flashed at times, but hardly played last year. Blake and Higgins have measureables but have yet to meaningfully impact. We will probably add a Bowman caliber tight end from the portal. If we were USC, we would buy the best tight end money could buy. We’re not, so our hopes rest on unknowns.

Defense could be the best in the nation. Defensive Tackles are stout and depth is impressive. Malcolm Ray, Zaire Angoy, Hamilton, Konga and Rainey are going to clog up running lanes. Aaron Lewis and Wesley Bailey have All American type potential and didn’t have as good a season as expected last year, as their coach was on the mend.

The Linebacking Corp is the heart and soul of this team. Tyreek Powell is a potential All American and first round draft pick. Mohamed Toure has gotten progressively better and has all conference potential. Walker and Wright back them up.

The secondary should once again be strong despite losing our best player in Melton. Longer ram is going to be drafted next year. Mascoe figures to be the other corner and will be seeing his first action. Igbinosun flashed big time potential last year, and was a key reason the defense was much improved. Safeties Flip Dixon and Shaquan Loyal were very effective last year. They will be supplemented by Kai Sanders, who is a budding star.

We are strong across the board. Tight End is the sole question mark. Looking like the best season since 2006, and perhaps even better.
Love the positivity. Miracles happen. One day you will be right.

Lots has changed since last year:

  • Rutgers played competitively with Big Ten powers well into third quarter despite lacking a consistent passing attack
  • Rushing attack yielded 232 yards vs Ohio State and 208 yards vs Miami
  • 14 sacks given up partially due to fewer passing attempts but still below expectations
  • Talent level of WR Corp significantly improved
  • Improved depth at QB position
  • The schedule changed and Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, and Michigan are not on the schedule
  • Players should be more proficient in offensive system in year 2

And yet most of what you wrote in the OP is misinformation.

Name one national champion over the last 10 years that didn’t have an elite QB. Athan will improve the QB play over last year’s disaster but he’s far from elite.

Our OL is average at best. Kyle only led the B1G in rushing because KC ran the ball 7 of every 10 snaps. And the TEs had to block constantly even on passing downs.

Also, get it in your head, Korey Duff is never playing TE at RU. You keep spreading old information on him from recruiting sites from like his sophomore/junior year. He’s a WR plain & simple and has the 40 times to back it up.

Your whole write up of the defense is laughable. Our DTs have no depth once you are past Ray, Hamilton & Konga. The rest are still unproven and RU still struggles generating a pass rush. Something you completely glossed over.

You forgot to enlighten everyone that Powell tore his Achilles in winter workouts so he’s a big question mark now. He may be available to play but likely will be limited the first couple of weeks. How this impacts the D remains to be seen because the drop off is steep after Toure & Powell.

This is an 8 win team that will have a very good defense and an offense that is still evolving. RU is much more than a TE away to say the least.

We could have Travis Kelce playing TE and Taylor Swift doing every halftime show and we'd not even get to the BiG championship game.

Don’t cherry-pick the last ten years just because it fits your agenda. there are plenty of teams within the last 25 years with non elite qbs that have won a ship.

- Craig Krenzel, Ohio State
- Ken Dorsey, Miami
- Matt Mauk, LSU
- Matt Flynn, LSU
- Tim Tebow, Florida
- Chris Leak, Florida
- Josh Heupal, Oklahoma

Our DTs are plenty deep with Ray, Hamilton, Konga, Angoy, Rainey. Angoy in particular had a very good game against Miami and was specifically called out.

We play Howard, Akron, and Virginia Tech the first three weeks of the season. We managed just fine without Powell when we played Miami. Powell will be back for Washington, which is when he will really be needed.

As for Duff, none of our tight ends bring the play making to the table that he does. Sure, he is listed as a WR, but we have that position covered. There is a huge need at Tight End, and Korey might be able to fill it. This is what Todd Hunt had to say:

But what makes Duff special is that, despite his size, he can go the distance, or make a chunk play, each time the receiver-slash-tight end catches the football.

This is a Team with the potential to win 10-12 games. We are at least a solid two deep across the board, and should be able to run the ball, stop the run, and throw downfield. Tight End is really the only question mark I see.

Yeah that Tebow fella wasn't any good. He only won 1 Heisman. Golden Gavin will win two, plus two O'Brien awards...ain't that right Fieldhouse Al ?

Good counterpoint to Al's post. As I've said, I'd be thrilled with 8-4. We are good but not 2006 good. And from top to bottom, the competition is at least as good if not better than 2006.

He was good enough to win a National Championship, but wasn’t good enough to be a consistent starter in the NFL. He was an athlete playing quarterback and thus cannot be considered an elite passer.

All you lose all credibility when you call Heisman winners, first team all Americans, Maxwell, Archie Griffin Award winners ect non elite. They may not have been 1st round NFL quarterbacks but to compare any one in Rutgers Qb room to any of them is a joke.

He was good enough to win a National Championship, but wasn’t good enough to be a consistent starter in the NFL. He was an athlete playing quarterback and thus cannot be considered an elite passer.
For his career Tebow completed 66.4% of his passes, threw for 9,285 yards, 88 tds and only 16 interceptions in 4 years. On what world is that not elite? His first national championship he threw for 3286 yards, 32 tds and only 5 ints.

To put that in perspective for Wimsatt to catch a "non elite passer" he would need to throw for 6,748 yards 74 tds while throwing 0 INTs this year.

How are we defining elite? Elite in my mind is a quarterback who made the NFL and started

If you include UFAs then definitely over. But actually drafted? I don't know. These are the leading contenders from my POV in order of most likely
- Kyle Monangai
- Aaron Lewis
- Tyreem Powell
- Mo Toure
- Flip Dixon
- Wes Bailey
- Desmon Igbanosun
- Robert Longerbeam

The path to a National Championship in college football is a daunting one, requiring a combination of talent, strategy, and often a bit of luck. Rutgers University, historically not known as a football powerhouse, has made significant strides in recent years under the guidance of their coaching staff and talented players. While they have shown promise in various positions, one area that could potentially elevate them to contention for a National Championship is the tight end position.

A dominant tight end can serve as a game-changer in both the passing and running game. They can create mismatches against opposing defenses with their size, speed, and athleticism. By providing a reliable target for the quarterback in crucial situations, they can keep drives alive and contribute to scoring opportunities. Additionally, their blocking ability can significantly enhance the effectiveness of the running game, opening up holes for the running backs and providing crucial protection for the quarterback.

In recent years, we've seen how impactful a top-tier tight end can be for college football teams. Players like Kyle Pitts at Florida or George Kittle during his time at Iowa have showcased the immense value a talented tight end can bring to a team's offense. For Rutgers, securing a standout tight end could be the missing piece that elevates them from a competitive team to a legitimate National Championship contender.

However, while having a standout tight end could certainly bolster Rutgers' chances, it's important to recognize that football is the ultimate team sport. Success on the gridiron requires contributions from every position group, as well as solid coaching, disciplined execution, and a bit of luck. While a dominant tight end could certainly improve Rutgers' prospects, achieving a National Championship would still require a collective effort from the entire team.

I like enthusiasm but the first sentence of the OP tells you to not read further. The best OL in the country? We don't have a single 4 star OL on the roster, not even 5.7. I know kids develop differently and some that have stayed with the program have improved but I would think we are not even in the Top 25 of Olines.

In the past I would agree but we saw a lowly Rutgers 3* transfer to Ohio State become All Big Ten …was drafted and I believe has become pretty good. Hollin Pierce ( a ton of fun 4 seasons ago ) now has the potential to be drafted . Don ‘t kid yourself the difference between that 3 and 4* is not as great especially Oline . Ask Shaun O’Ohara… We are once again getting to the level needed and Flats is no joke.

Cherry pick? I said 10 years for ease of conversation...lol. Additionally, no one plays football like they did 25 years ago except maybe Greg. Now the real kicker, every one of those QBs you named is better than Athan and light years better than Gavin.

Also, there's no guarantee Powell is actually ready in late September. That's just the messaging we're getting now and we all know how Greg loves to play the shell game when he gives out information. Just like Sam Brown was ready to go to start last season. Then we find out his injury was still causing him issues week to week.

So stop your trolling about 10-12 wins. We have the right depth for 8 wins. However, the team is one injury away in several positions from playing guys with a huge drop off or guys that haven't seen snaps. In your bizarro world you call these types of players "depth"...lol. On championship teams they call them "practice squad".

If they ever bring back the Jackass tv show, they’d only need 1 cast member, who needs no introduction here.

NJ.com texting service says Powell will be ready for the season. As long as he’s ready by October, we’ll be fine. Washington is going to be a shell of its former self.

The talent level used to fall off a cliff when comparing first two second string. That is no longer the case, and if a first stringer is lost, we can replace with an experienced, talented 2nd stringer, unless the 2nd stringer is a redshirt freshman like John Stone or Dominic Rivera, who are 2nd string possibilities but redshirted last year. Sanders, Angoy, Mascoe, White, Chin, Asomoah and Sam Brown are certainly not practice squad and neither is Athan or Gavin, considering one of them is likely going to be 2nd string.

This year is a new year, and Athan, Gavin, and AJ are writing their stories. They will have an opportunity to do big things because every single game is winnable, and the WR talent is there. I’m comfortable with our two deep everywhere, save tight end.

The team has never been deeper or more talented.

Angoy had three tackles vs Miami. Troy Rainey played in all thirteen games last year, and has significant playing experience. Konga is transferring because he couldn’t break the two deep. Plus we now have Jasire Peterson who is ready to go. DT is least of my concerns.

The second you make this about the opposition and not yourself… you lose.

If you like small defensive tackles and no depth we’re good to go

I hear the BigTen may move the Rose Bowl to Giants Stadium if Rutgers makes it. Average daily high temperature there for January 1st is over 40 degrees! And there will be no freakin’ parade wit flowers!

Washington is rebuilding, having lost 40 players off of its roster.

You park your late-model SUV in the driveway and return home to find it up on blocks, wheels removed, catalytic converter missing and leather seats gone.

This is the University of Washington football team right now, stripped bare, a shell of its former self, immobile.

Since entering practices for the College Football Playoff semifinals game against Texas in the Sugar Bowl, the Huskies not only have lost a head coach, but nearly 40 players — or a third of the roster.

Fieldhouse Al in his customary cluelessness fails to realize that almost every opponent will have a much better QB and a much better HC and modern philosophy.

It's not a coincidence that UW, UCLA and Michigan St (new hires) and USC have offensive background HCs...they won't run a 1950 offense and we won't be able to win 10-6 as is Schiano's m.o.

Another certain failure is Bielema...a defense first guy who flopped at UW and is an anchor at Illinois too. That will be the game we have the best odds of winning.

Can't be any more obvious. Defense rarely wins. Iowa is the outlier, and even they realized the futility and forced Ferentz's son out.
