OT: CFB TV ratings and related news

ND no longer plays a full marquee schedule so the average fan isn't as interested in watching their games plus the competition is so plentiful. The question is what happens when NBC doesn't renew their contract. Does another network even bother picking them up or would that be the straw that forces ND to join a conference?

That’s when they join the B1G

They will join the ACC. They always avoid the best completion so they definitely won’t join the B1G. In the ACC, they just have to get by Clemson each year. It’s perfect for them.

The Acc is a dying conference with half the rev. ND. above all, values money more than wins.

Interesting to see that nearly all of the highest rated games were either B1G or SEC contests. None of ND's NBC games made the list which makes me wonder if NBC's enthusiasm for extending the ND contract might be waning.
That’s why the B10/SEC get the most money.

ND’s slate was bad this year with some teams being down so that affected them. They did drop this year but I feel like I read somewhere their ratings in 2019 were good. So it might be an aberration I’m not sure. They’re still a TV draw but they need their competition to be mediocre or better. I don’t know when their contract runs out but I’d still expect them to be on a main network not USA or anything like that outside of a test case like streaming Toledo this year.

That's pretty interesting; the significant drop in viewers year on year. Probably just due to who the competitors were, do you think?
It's because the games were on New Year's Eve, when large groups of people have other activities planned. The casual viewer who is considering a NYE party vs the semifinals will skip football for the party.

I expect in-person sports attendance to continue dropping since it seemed to be the prevalent trend even before the pandemic. But I would've thought TV viewership would only increase.
NYE is part of it and non competitive matchups is part of it too. It’s down from 2016 as well the last time they were on NYE. Next year is also NYE.

Compared to itself it’s not great but still a good number overall as a tv rating for programming.

Gotcha. Makes sense.

My NYE party plans were curtailed since our annual NYE host cancelled the party and went to the game, that rat bastard (@RU848789). 😃

So at least I got to watch a lot of football.

One of the streaming services will vastly overpay ND just to establish their brand in college football. The days of seeing ND home games on free TV may very well be over.

Apple in talks with MLB for some broadcast rights so they can add it to their AppleTV+ streaming service. Still don't think the big tech companies are ready to come in full bore on sports but every incremental step is less for ESPN and traditional broadcasters. Disney may have deep pockets but they're not as deep as big tech.

next year we open week 1 against notre dame. I expect it to be one of the most viewed games of the year.

Completely stupid idea.

Two fixes. Stop playing on Monday night. Monday night sports ratings have been going in the toilet. College Football is played on Saturday.
8pm games suck!! Saturday at 6pm! Do it!!

I'd watch it whenever the heck it is doesn't matter to me but aren't NFL games played on Saturday this time of year? The end of the regular and then the playoffs?

One suggestion I read somewhere was move it to the middle of the week just to have a space away from the NFL weekend. Take a breather and then back for some more football.

Does the NFL play the Super Bowl on a Wednesday?? The NFL put the top two meaningless games on this past Saturday. Shows how little they care. Last night's game would have crushed on Saturday. Who cares about Dallas/Philadelphia when Philly rested their starters.

Those two games got 19M and 20M respectively as meaningless games. I don’t think anyone in college football wants to dilute any potential audience going up against the NFL.

Middle of the week is more about trying to alleviate any possible football fatigue from the NFL weekend.

They got that because there was nothing else on. Your viewpoint about college QBs and TV is pretty damn poor. You were way off base last night and the same on this. College football fans love games on Saturday day or night. Monday through Friday is losing money period.

Most usually avoid the NFL like the plague and who wants to put up their marquee event against it. You don’t think there’s some overlap in some viewers between both. Why would they want to make their fans choose and dilute the audience of their top event. You can say nothing else on but there’s a lot of programming you could say that about but they don’t draw those kind of numbers even if nothing else is on.

Day of the week is less of a problem than just having more of the country have interest in the teams and having more variety of teams in the game. College football is too top heavy and they need it to be at least a little less so. If that happened the numbers could improve.

You can say my view is poor on tv or whatever I don’t care. Plenty of things I felt could happen as it relates to tv ended up happening. I thought we’d get in the B10 when many here got panicked with each BE defection. I said I could see the B10 split their tier 1 rights between two networks. I said when the ACC lost Maryland it’s not them who is the weakest (quite a few here thought they were crumbling) it’s the B12 because of the small geographic footprint etc..I don’t pretend to be an expert but think I have a reasonable feel of how things are. People in charge would rather not go up against the NFL, crappy NFL games or not.

Wow. You posted a long post without any facts. Stay away from QB posts because you are biased and out of touch. You don't have a reasonable feel about anything. ABC/ESPN doesn't give a rats ass about meaningless NFL games. ESPN/ABC would crushed this weekend. And explain why did this year NC game suffer in ratings?

I know a lot of football fans that watch way more of the NFL and very little of college football. Most of the NFL fans I know don’t consider the level of play, even at the top level, not very high in college. I like watching football and watch a lot of both the NFL and college.

Why do you think. Another all SEC matchup and more specifically a rematch of a game a month ago.

And what exactly am I biased about? I don’t even know what that’s suppose to mean. I’d watch the game whatever day it was on.

You admitted that you didn't think Bennett was able to win the game or handle the pressure. Wrong! You admitted you didn't know jack shit about Aaron Murray that he holds 2 of the SEC TDs and Passing Yards to this day and admitted you are biased because he didn't play well in the NFL, WRONG ignoring the fact he is still the leader in the SEC in both categories. What did you get right on this thread?? Nothing!!

LOL what does any of that have to do with anything with relation to this discussion
Nothing.

What does bias about not knowing about Murray have to do with a tv discussion. Is that the bias you’re referring to haha. It doesn’t even make sense that you bring that up on a completely unrelated topic.

I don’t know what to say to you. This is just confusion like that discussion where you confused P5 and G5 when we debated the playoff expansion. Notice then I didn’t go off on you or say anything to make you look bad just corrected and understood your mistake and moved on with the discussion.

You keep posting crap and when called out you come up with Oregon and other nonsense. Your posts last night and today have been complete nonsense. You were wrong last night about calling Bennett out. Embarrassing wrong yet never owning up to it without an excuse. Your viewpoint on QBs is the dumbest posts on this board today. Not knowing that Aaron Murray was a an elite QB says it all. Admit you wrong and move on!

Again relates to nothing on this thread and its topic.

You’re right on everything and I’m dumb. You happy now. Move on.
