Rutgers needed to beat Michigan in the Big championship game so the,y had the automatic bid to get in. Their RPI at the time was 45 and Ole Miss was 39 at the time I believe which got Ole Miss in

That certainly played a part. Ole Miss was 8-2 in their last 10 entering the SEC Tourney. That included a 5-2 record vs teams in the Top 25. RU had 1 win all year vs a Top 25 team. They had a much tougher schedule and did just enough to get selected.
