Hopefully the end result is a bit of normalization in the RE prices across the country. As a JC resident I'll get f'd, but it's better in the long run if cities are affordable for people who want to live there.

It will also be interesting to see how this plays out now that it is becoming apparent that not being in a city doesn't really protect you from COVID.

Yes it does. Even in "rural" states, outbreaks are located in the urban centers.

Between the rising crime rates and Covid, big cities are in huge trouble. For all the things happening in LA, at least it's spread out, though that doesn't seem to be helping much.

Had a fun time last night. These "protesters" are trying to light fires in the hills of Beverly Hills. I had a bird flying around all night tracking someone. Lights coming in my house and everything. Fun times.

The percentage infection isn't that much higher, but the overall numbers obviously are. I can't find the article I saw, but the disparity just isn't that much (outside of NYC, which got hammered).
The infection rate is of limited value if you don't know what people are doing. If a city is locked down and a rural town is normal operations, an equal infection rate tells a very different story.

Escape from LA!
Get out as soon as possible. US cities are in decay.

Always amazing to me how many Rs actively root for cities to fail, when cities are what pay for all the suburbs and rural areas. If the cities fail, the country is screwed.
No politics in this thread, thank you!

Nobody is rooting for cities to fail, but we shouldn't ignore the facts of what is happening right now. Corona and the other unrest will have generational consequences.

It's not just Montana. The Hudson Valley, Eastern Suffolk County, 495 and slightly farther out area outside Boston and probably Sussex in NJ have surging prices. Out of the city but close enough for the remote workers to come into the office a day or 2 a week. My sister was in the process of retiring and moving to New Hampshire when this started and by early April the interest in her Mass 495 home was surging. Closed in June and did better than they had hoped.

No doubt cities are in trouble in the short term (everywhere is to some degree or another, but cities more so), but perhaps people should give a thought or two about how all those suburbs people are fleeing to will be doing if the cities actually do crater.

Also, I do know your history of posts about cities ... maybe rooting is too strong a word, but I don't think so.

I will always have to keep a house here for family/business reasons but it's going to be 6 months and a day somewhere else. Looking to decrease my RE holdings here as we speak.

No, it's accurate and the only reason this is a thread.

Both Big Sky and Yellowstone, as well as another spot. You familiar? Thoughts?

Some of the most beautiful scenery in the country/world. If I could spend 6 month a year there I would do so as well. Good for you (and, nope I don't have any recommendations on what is better, it's all great IMO).

Nothing is happening.

Corona is happening but that's happening everywhere. And cities, need I remind you, are the only places that took Corona seriously and actually took measures to stop it. It was all for naught when suburban and rural folks actively chose to ignore it.

Beyond that, there is nothing happening in cities that is making them worse. Remote work won't change where airports are placed and the majority of business is done. Police reform will make them better. The unrest you speak of is peaceful, and for the better.

I've been looking upstate NY the past months. Now the NYC psychotics are looking to run from their mess and hitting upstate. NY is probably just shot. Maybe Western PA is an option. The same hour drive as upstate area I liked.

"Militias" already. forming. That can go very fast - weeks and not months. Nothing spontaneous taking place.

If you want to flee to rural america to avoid militias I have bad news for you.

We had to burn the rich and the middle class out of the city in order to save it. It is for their own good. they will like it or else.

Common sense decision. We will do the same with NJ eventually. Buy a house in Stone Harbor, but a primary home elsewhere for 6 month and a day.

Not intimately. Always thought Big Sky would be a good place to invest as far as ski real estate. Resort size and terrain comparable to Jackson Hole without the crazy reputation or sky high real estate (a decade ago, not sure what it's like now). Seemed like the kind of place with crazy growth potential, like Aspen or J-Hole back in the day. Only thing that stopped me from looking more closely at a move was lack of any major hub city around.

Don't think you can go wrong. Beautiful country, seems like timing's just right. MT cold smoke is supposed to be some of the best snow out there. Bridger and Big Sky both great for different vibes and I'm sure you can't go wrong with YC.

I am still getting calls from realtors begging me to sell. Got a handwritten note too. I'm not too worried. We're still "rural" for some Manhattan/BK people as crazy as it sounds.
