OT: David Bowie RIP

Heard about his death this morning, report mentioned he was smoking 60 cigarettes a day until he quit ten years ago.

My dad smoked between 60-80 cigarettes a day. It finally caught up to him at the age of 63.

RICO, He was way more than glam rock..He was funky before white man tried. He was EPDM before white men tried..His duet with Bing Crosby on The Little Drummer Boy is the only Christmas song besides Nat King Cole that makes my personal play list...The Man who Fell to Earth was one of the creepier movies of all time.. Cheers David

His final album "Darkstar" was just released this past Friday. It's at the following site if you wish to listen. It sounds a little sad, a little stark, a little happy, a little out there. Essentially... it's Bowie.

"I Can't Give Everything Away" is the final cut and my favorite of the seven songs.

Liver cancer, always bad news. We need more quirky, experimental characters like him in music today. "Under Pressure" is probably my favorite song he was a part of, along with another quirky great rocker who is now gone.
There are and have always been tons of quirky experimental characters in music (just take a tour around YouTube). Maybe we need more promoters or record companies or whatever to recognize and promote such people more often.

I'll always remember him as Jareth from Labyrinth the movie. Big part of my childhood... RIP David.

RIP David Bowie.

Something about this song from the first time I heard it always stuck with me:

When I heard early this morning for a split second of disbelief I thought it odd that someone else had that name. Then it sunk in like a hands held behind the back gut punch. Although I was young during his peak period he was the man, the coolest dude on the planet, to me, and especially to older siblings and friends. He was a true artist and poet - he could sing, write, play, act. But he was also an icon - a trendsetter, who changed that generation, did things his way for his art no matter what anyone thought, particular the music establishment. He was the zenith of rock for the 1970-77 period - no one could match him. I believe it was no coincidence that he and Elvis shared a birthday. He is in my top 3 all time rock artists. Today really sucked. RIP, David.

Truly a creative genius. "Space Oddity" came out my freshman year along with "Imagine" and "Maggie May" just to mention a few. (Where are those kinds of songs today?!?) Even though I never got into the "glamour rock" scene I really liked his music especially from the "Let's Dance" album.
