I like to get the weed whacking out of the way before, sometimes a day before, I cut the grass. Then it's smooth sailing on cut day. Nothing looks worse than a lawn that's cut but not weed whacked. How about you, are you a before or after man ?
Understand. question was intended for us "weekend warriors" that do it ourselves.I haven't touched a lawn mower in 15 years. The landscaping crews tend to do both at the same time.

I like to do it before, but I rarely do. It seems logical to cut all the weeds then "vacuum" them up when mowing. But my yard is almost completely encircled with rock walls, so it involves a ton of weed whacking. Between that and the fact that weed whackers are detestable pieces of garbage, I do it rarely. The look of weeds really doesn't bother me - just blends in with the other plants and weeds that grow in the rocks. The only place I try to do more often is around the front porch.
Why don't you do what the rest of western Monmouth transplants do--kill as much grass as possible, put in stone landscape beds, and plant shrubs like these:I get it. And my hat is off to you guys. I HATE lawn care. I hate it so much that a few years after we built this house I decided I wanted a lawn service. The wife said "no, you spent all that money on that fancy lawnmower." So the next time I cut the lawn I ran the mower over a stump and grenaded the engine.
If you get your rocks off in the yard you can do less whacking of your weed.I like to do it before, but I rarely do. It seems logical to cut all the weeds then "vacuum" them up when mowing. A third of my back yard is pool deck. If I had my way I'd turn the rest of it into gardens, for sure. Grass is an artificial construct.
Of course, if NJ should ever follow in the wake of places like Colorado, I'm gonna go all "Weeds" on that shit.
I pay about $25 per week. They are here about 20 minutes once a week. How much is lawn care on the east coast our of curiosity? It is very inexpensive in SoCal. The guys do my property for $250 a month. There once a week for 2 hours. Before some prick asks, yes, they are legal.
Mostly before. I usually do the edging every other tome I cut the lawn. BTW... I cut the lawn on the longish side, and mulch the cuttings back into the lawn.Understand. question was intended for us "weekend warriors" that do it ourselves.

I weed whack every other time, and always before I cut the grass.

I pay $55 a month for cutting and whacking. They come about 3 times a month. All the other stuff (Fertilizer, Seed, Insecticide, etc) is $15 each. It's the fall and spring clean-ups that cost more to pick up the leaves, branches, twigs and put down lime that costs more. All total I'm paying $900 - $1000 a year. How much is lawn care on the east coast our of curiosity? It is very inexpensive in SoCal. The guys do my property for $250 a month. $55 per month? $15 per application? Just curious: how big is your lawn?I pay $55 a month for cutting and whacking. They come about 3 times a month. For those of you that have teen age kids, don't you have them cut the lawn? Or is this beneath them, or will result in being reported to DYFS? My 14 year old son has been cutting the lawn for a couple of years. He gets 30 bucks for each cut, which is going to go toward his car when he is ready to drive.
Good for you, but you're definitely in the minority. In the age of helmets, knee, and elbow pads, most parents are probably scared their child will kill themselves with a lawnmower. Children should learn at a young age how to scrub toilets, mop floors, wash windows and cars, dust, vacuum, pull weeds, rake, and prepare a meal.
