Watched the movie on Netflix the other night with my daughter (up from So. Cal.) ....and loved it. Solid performances by Di Caprio, Lawrence, Streep and HIll to name a few.

Yes it's a political social satire: Watch it.

Spoiler:

SPOILER:

MSU is mentioned several times throughout the film.

I decided to look up MSU's ranking in Astronomy / Astrophysics.... as well as Rutgers, and found this:

CHOP!!

Funny you should mention

I watched it yesterday then again this morning. I did not intend to see the whole thing a second time but I wound up doing so
That said, some hate the movie because it is a bit satirical, and watch it as a regular movie, thus the acting seems weird

If you look at rotten tomatoes you see opinions like it was the worst ever, others saying it was brilliant
I loved it and was going to start a thread on the current events board

This movie is definitely polarizing. Personally, I hated it. I thought the script was boring. I thought DiCaprio was miscast (should have been an older-looking actor - Mel Gibson was the first guy I thought of, but Clooney or Pitt might have been the superior choices). And except for Jennifer Lawrence, I thought the rest of the actors kind of mailed it in (Meryl Streep gave a terrible performance). I did find the recurring gag about the snacks to be very funny, as well as, the mid-credits scene.

I said all of this to my niece and she told me that I didn't understand that it was supposed to be satire. And I was like, "No, I get that it's satire. But it's poorly acted satire. There's no reason satire has to have bad acting." She responded by telling me I was not the target audience ... and based on the split audience reactions, I think she's probably right. I felt like I wasted two hours. And I was kind of excited about this movie from the trailer.

EDIT:
Another example of split audience reaction ... my niece thought the guy who played the Zuckerberg/Steve Jobs-like character deserved an Oscar nomination. I thought he was the worst actor in the movie. *shrugs shoulders*

It sucks. Very UN_FUNNY. dont watch it.
Kids home from college wanted to watch it as a foamily and I sat through the whole thing and suffered through it. It's a complete hollywood / Liberal perspective on current social issues. Completely polarizing and makes me hate the attitude and perspective of these people even more

And look at the post just above yours, that poster loved it
which was exactly my point, extremely opposite opinions
Edit; I would not label this comedy as such , again satire with several funny scenes in it.

I don’t know if it is being advertised as a comedy

Amazing movie. Premise not too far fetched considering recent phenomena of truth denial, cult of personality, etc…
TIL truth denial and cults of personality are recent phenomena. I wonder what I am supposed to call what I watched in the 50 years before “recent” now.

I think for some, the cast members will make the movie unlikable by default. To consider it thought-provoking would be an automatic betrayal to their ideological tribe, the number one paradigm filter all reactions must pass through first.

I am a conservative and did not factor in the liberal cast or liberal stances in the movie as part of my opinion

It was a very funny satirical movie that made fun of the New York Times, Morning Joe, modern day Republicans and Silicon Valley. I fall into a couple of those categories and still found it funny.

And yes, this was not Merrill Streep’s best performance…until the scene in the middle of the closing credits.

A bit too heavy on the preaching, certainly not Jonathan Swift or Dr. Strangelove quality satire , but nonetheless I chuckled . I thought DiCaprio and Lawrence were fine, Streep was a wreck. I couldn't figure out Mark Rylance; very wierd piece of acting. Jonah Hill and Blanchett had their moments but not their best stuff. Why was Timothee Chalamet even in the movie?

It's political satire tries to be even-handed but fails badly at that, so it comes off as another Hollywood take that knows nothing of nuance. It's not good satire and becomes at time like bad farce. But there sure are some funny moments unconnected to satire, including the Jonah Hill interactions with Jennifer Lawrence and even Timothy Chalamet, however you spell that name.

Nothing can ever equal the satirical brilliance of Dr. Strangelove as well as the performance of its extraordinarily talented cast. However, I think don’t look up is an entertaining film with a decent message which accurately (albeit satirically) reflects today’s US society, Sadly, Meryl Streep seems to have been wasted in a cartooni-like role.

Didn’t see it yet but sounds like it’s very polarizing—sadly, much like just about everything these days…

Forget who's on first and what's on 2nd....IMO there were so many references that were spot on from a Left or Right position. The denial of facts ....while covertly planning plan B is art imitating life.

I'm watching it again tonight with my fiancée!

PS Did anyone notice the simiarlity between the # of syllables / sound of the movie title and.....????? LOL

beaced will go along with your reaction. The theory that if you like something, it makes it good is nonsense.Something is either intrinsically good or it isn't. What the masses like is usually in bad taste.

So, too long for me. I liked the cast a lot. Hit the nail on the head about where we have gone as a race. Ted K got it so right on technology destroying our civilization. I think we are past the point of no return.
Streep as Trump was nice touch. Trumpers need not watch this one. Or maybe they just would miss the point entirely.

I thought it was great. 5 stars. Great cast, funny story, biting satire. Trumpsters need not watch - you will be offended.
Not a Trumpster but just so you know, your buddy isn't doing too well either. 1st time in 30 yrs. of business and there's a cement shortage. Had to close down for a week now. Jen and Joe, we've gone way past this just effecting Peloton bikes for Christmas.

Lol. People thinking like you were featured and busted just as much.

Very entertaining. You want to watch another frustrating because it's more real than you'd like movie? 2015 Eye in the Sky.

My buddy? Are you talking about Biden? He was the choice of being not Bernie and then not Trump.

I certainly understand the movie poked shots at the left as well.

Eye in the Sky - Another great movie. Good Kill is also good involving drone strikes.

I liked the Trump presidency and the covid mishandling allegories.

The hinted at incestual relationship between President and chief of staff also drew parallels to Trump and Ivanka.

Also it was interesting how many people in power lost sight of the forest for the trees. Spending more time on campaigning rather than solving the problem at hand. Similar to our current day political climate where nothing much gets done (on both sides) unless there is a campaign on the line.

Overall I thought it was decent for satire. 7/10.

But if Joe incentivized young people to work in the cement-making biz by guaranteeing health care for them and offering to pay tuition for future schooling, the Ayn Rand wing of the GOP (all the GOP Senators) would cry “communism!” And Joe Manchin would ask the Koch Foundation how he should vote.

I talked to driver from Quikrete and he said the issue there is old machinery not being able to keep up with demand.

Anecdotal, and I think it's a very difficult chore to defend Biden at this point, but there is certainly some stuff going on in terms of shortages that goes beyond the president.

I actually like it and enjoyed the move, but I like satire. That said I understand why so many people hated it so much. It think it really depends on how you interpret the satire.

I get the satire, but couldn't tell if they were trying to be edgy, clever, or witty. It just fell flat as two hours of my life I'll never get back.

Didn’t see it yet but sounds like it’s very polarizing—sadly, much like just about everything these days…

It’s interesting that one side thinks that all the satire is directed at them.

The movie takes satirical jabs at Obama and both Clintons, as well as GWB and Trump. And it takes swipes at liberal media such as the NYT and Morning Joe, not just conservative media. Jokes are made at the expense of quite a few Dems. Pretty much all politicians, media and tech titans are the targets.

The movie is anti-climate change denier. It should only be polarizing to those who don’t believe global warming is real.
