OT: Green Bay hiring sports radio personality as men’s basketball coach

Bannon era assistant Todd Kowalczyk was the head coach of Green Bay from 2002-2010 before taking over at Toledo where he has been head coach for 14 years. The dude has had a nice, stable career.

Not sure I consider Gottlieb just a sports radio personality. It's not like they hired Stephen A Smith
Stephen A would be quite the head coach hire! He would run out of time setting up the context of how he came to his tactic during timeouts though.😂

His dad was a well known AAU Coach in Southern California back in the 80’s and 90’s. In a great book co-written by Armen Ketayen (spelling likely incorrect) and Alex Wolff in the late 80’s entitled “Raw Recruits,” mentions his dad a lot…not all that glowingly, iirc.

While a good assist guy at OK St for Eddie Sutton, Doug Gottlieb may have been the worst free throw shooting PG I can ever recall. Hopefully he can teach his guards better than he shot them at Maybe 50%.

Also got into trouble while at ND for shoplifting his freshman year.

I am old enough to remember the Triplett brothers of Toledo football fame playing some hoops at Toledo. I saw Toledo knock off #1 NYU and Barry Kramer (and Happy Hairston?) at MSG as a kid. One or both of the football playing Triplett’s may have played for that Toledo team. Mel Triplett had a very solid career with the NY Giants.

Gottlieb has a little coaching experience, he was one of the assistant coaches of the USA's 2009 Maccabiah games squad and was the Head Coach of the USA's Team thewt won the Maccabiah games in 2017.

Doug Gottlieb being a national TV sports personality will put Green Bay on the map when it comes to recruiting players passed over by the well known programs

Gottlieb reminds me, personality-wise, of Bruce Pearl. Let’s see if he grates on his counterparts like Pearl. Gottlieb will rattle some cages and make some noise. Whether he has Pearl’s bravado and roster building skill are other matters.

Because the are both Jewish? I can't think of any other similarities.

I can see it. I was thinking a cross between Dan Dakich and Steve Lappas.

That's one way to beef up recruiting High School talent that might not be heavily recruited
( Found this about it. My ad blocker kept me from opening article and just googled for info)
>MAC head coach: “Come play for me, we'll get you to the Big Ten in two years” Toledo men's basketball coach Tod Kowalczyk has found a way to make his program's mid-major status work for them. <

I agree. At least he played college basketball
Screamin’ A. actually played for Winston Salem St I thought (not D1 obviously). Gottlieb, I believe, broke some assist records during his college days…and I seem to recall broke some fairly serious laws due to a credit cards theft scandal.
