OT: Audacy to Shutter All-News WCBS-AM, New York; GKB to Lease Signal for ESPN New York

Yes for 40 or so of the 50 years I lived in NJ I was a daily listener. Often several times a day.

On an unrelated note for those of us that are NJ news nerds Michael Aron passed.
If Michael Aron didn’t get his own thread here … that’s surprising.

What was the older guy’s name again - the reporter from the Trenton Times? He was the best.
Jim Goodman. He was a character.
I enjoyed Nick Acocella.
Pretty sure both have reported to the Big News Room above.

Yes to both. Thanks for posting about Aron.

Jim Goodman probably had a million more stories that he wasn't sharing on that show! 😄

The most cogent comment that I can make concerning ESPN's take over of CBS-AM:They don't know JACK.

Gonna miss Craig Allen who is the best weather guy in the area. Sad day and end of an era. Hopefully some 880 talent move over to 1010 but not sure what I will listen to at this point. I do recall liking Scott Stanford (I think he was on 880 at one point - didn't realize he was on 1010 until I read this thread) so I may have to give 1010 a chance.

CBS weather with Allen was pretty good. I often checked weather "on the 8s" when in the car.
What is curious about Audacy is that they also own WFAN.
So Audacy is giving-up on having 2 news stations to having 2 sports stations.
Audacy filed for bankruptcy in Jan 2024 - about 2 billion in debt

I'm missing 880 already. I'm so used to hearing traffic and weather on the 8's, as well as the headlines at the top and bottom of the hour. 1010 WINS isn't coming in clear in the house or the car in eastern Monmouth County.

It's too bad they couldn't' switch to a streaming service after leasing out the frequency.

Scott Stanford welcomed former 880 listeners to 1010WINS this am. Wonder how many there are/will be?

urban sprawl accounts for a lot of those measurements. have you noticed there is no New York in those lists? NYC uses a Central park weather station and Central Park has barely changed for over 100 years.. though, certainly, there has been building inside it here and there.
FYI…i checked the author of that article…a BA major in Spanish and music 🤣

They also cherry pick SA as the drastic change example since 1973…the 79s was the coldest decade in SA history with zero 100 deg days from 1972 -1977 while del rio two hours west averages 80 per year…little things that the lay person won’t notice or check…

I heard that. Been listening to WCBS for over 40 years. Been trying WINS this week and there are some familiar names. However it’s just OK. WCBS format and talent was just so much better. Not sure what Audacy was thinking.

This
The 1010 signal is real bad.

I'm moved almost completely to Sirius/XM for sports talk and financial news. I also stream YouTube content in my car (audio only) and listen to my regular shows. No matter where I am, the signal is practically perfect.

AM and FM radio is nearly dead to me, which is a big change over the years. I was a diehard WFAN listener for decades.

I could never get a clear 880 signal for Mets games. 1010 is OK for us.

MTV started with non-music content in order to increase viewer stability and engagement. People were tuning into MTV to hear the current hit they liked and then changing channel. CBS radio was probably similar - people listening for a few minutes and then moving on. MTV's "Real World" and such brought in more consistent viewers

Owning both CBS and 1010 probably didn't make sense with both being quick hits. 880 going sports content will keep more listeners . Audacy (also owns WFAN) owed 1.7 billion and restructured to owe 350 million. They had to shuffle-up.

I only listen to WFAN for football. I like Boomer and Tiki but after that its a slog. I've been listening to a lot of pods on Spotify these days.

It amazes me how nearly everyone sells out for power or money or security (which is really just retaining their power and money) ) these days. This truly is the age of greed. But this thread is about radio /end rant.

WCBS is the 4th station carrying Mets games that has had its call letters retired following WHN,WJRZ, and WNEW.
WABC only had its format changed.

I guess I missed this as well. I wake up to 98.7 (ESPN radio). The other day was music. I read ESPN gave up 98.7 to move to 880 (was originally supposed to be 1050 I think). I figured they were just going for an AM and FM signal. Weird move but I read they want to move more to digital distribution. I really don't listen to sports radio anymore during the day but assume Michael Kay fan boys were all over this.

1050 is now a hybrid of ESPN NY and ESPN National.
When the Mets are on 880,ESPN NY is on 1050.After the game they move back to 880 and ESPN-National goes to 1050.
