OT: Minor to Moderate Snowfall for Most Fri Night/Sat morning; then a frigid few days

good luck with 1/2 inch an hour rates
They're getting them in SNJ/SEPA and we're about to get into at least 1/4" per hour rates, so we'll see. Radar finally has filled in for the 95 corrridor and it's snowing decently with a new dusting on the ground at 33F.

We got 3/8" in the last hour for an hourly rate of - wait for it - 3/8" per hour, lol. Snowing moderately at 33F and accumulating everywhere except on paved surfaces - nice dendrites, so the snow growth aloft must be nice in the dendritic growth zone. Radar looks good for awhile, so 1-2" is certainly in reach. Let's see how it goes. My wife and I just went for a very nice walk outside - it's just gorgeous out there!

If the 01Z HRRR (below) and RAP (8 pm EST data inputs) and the 0Z NAM (7 pm inputs) are right, we're going to get another 1-2" in most of CNJ/NNJ/NYC and even down to Philly and parts of SNJ.

NWS-Philly just issued advisories for most of CNJ/NNJ/NEPA for 2-4" of total snowfall (but not Middlesex, lol).

And another 3/8" this past hour giving up 3/4" so far. Should definitely make my 1.25" prediction and will hopefully get to 2" if the models are correct. Light to moderate snow continues at 33F, just warm enough to have minimal accumulations on paved surfaces, but it's forecast to drop to 32F by midnight for most of CNJ, with some more snow to come, so secondary/untreated roads and sidewalks/driveways could get slippery (but no major driving impacts expected outside of areas that get 3" or more well NW of 95).

Just got back from the gym around 10, still coming down here, actually a little heavier than before. However, now it's starting to stick on a few places on the roads.

Grilling up a couple of burgers right now, just cleaned off the grill, had an inch and an eighth on it.

Less intensity the last hour, so as of 11:30 pm we're now at about 0.9" with the temp finally down to 32F, so we should start seeing some accumulation on paved surfaces. Latest HRRR still showing another 1-2" overnight for most of CNJ/NNJ/NYC, so 2" is easily within reach here and for most, with some areas in the Lehigh Valley, NWNJ, Bucks, Montco, the Poconos, etc. already having reached 2"+.

So, as of 12:30 am, we're up to 1.1" with 0.2" falling the past hour; temp still at 32F and with wet paved surfaces, it'll still take more intensity (to overcome the melting from liquid water probably at about 33F) or a drop to 31F to get some accumulation on paved surfaces. Radar still looking pretty good and the latest hi-res models still showing another 1-2" for most of CNJ/NNJ/NYC through 7-8 am, so at least 2" is looking likely here.

Still coming down here, probably have gotten at least another half an inch.

He didn't say that, even though I wish he had for selfish reasons. He upped totals out towards the Delaware River to 2-4" as per the map (which is very similar to Lee Goldberg's which I posted above) and while they don't forecast for PA, this would obviously include Philly and its nearby PA burbs. They still barely have 1" for the 95 corridor from NB to NYC. We'll see...

Radar starting to fill in again towards 95 - we just need a few hours of moderate snow (1/4-1/2" per hour rates) to get 1-2". It's not really that much snow. Already have 1-2" in the Lehigh Valley and NW Philly suburbs and it's accumulating in Philly and nearby SNJ.

I guess he was right.

Best hour of the storm with 0.3" bringing us to 1.4" as of 1:30 am and with temps steady at 32F, we're finally seeing some accumulation on paved surfaces (just a coating so far, but assuming we get another 1/2"-1", much of that should end up on the paved surfaces now (once the snow has a foothold, subsequent snow falls on 32F snow, not slightly warmer cement, and accumulates readily).

Nap time for the next ~3 hours; hopefully the HRRR/RAP hi-res models, which have been doing well continue to do so, as they show another 1" for much of CNJ and 1"+ for all of NENJ/NYC from now through 7-8 am.

Was surprised to see a report of 1.5" in North Brunswick from a couple of hours ago - they must have over 2" by now. Lots of 1.5-3" amounts reported in Sussex/Warren/Morris and Hunterdon/Somerset/Mercer, as well as in most of EPA (Bucks/Montco/Lehigh Valley etc.) Philly Intl only reporting 0.1", but Bustleton in the far NE of the city is reporting 1.5" and a friend in CC has almost 1". Another poster in my hometown of Turnersville about 10 miles SSE of CC reported 1.4". And finally, NENJ/NYC are starting to get accumulating snow.

I guess he was right.
No, he wasn't. He didn't say that in the reports I saw and even if he did, why would he say that, but have a completely different map? Curran is simply not the best meteorologist - he was talking about "minor" accumulations of 2-4" in western NJ and said snow wouldn't accumulate on any roads, which may be true along/SE of 95 (but we're even starting to get snow on the roads), but is not true in the northern/western parts of CNJ.

Just woke up and took a nice walk outside in the gorgeous silence of a fresh snowfall. As of 5:30 am, we're up to 2.6", which is 1.2" the past 3 hours or 0.4" per hour and the radar loop from the last 3 hours looks like the snow was pretty steady for most of NNJ/CNJ/NYC (N of 195) and it still looks pretty good for another hour or two. Temp is down to 31F and all paved surfaces are covered with about 1" of snow. Huge overperformer - think we'll make it to 3" as the latest HRRR still shows another 1/2-3/4" for most of NNJ/CNJ (especially the eastern half as the back edge of precip approaches) - as I said when they posted the advisories last evening, Middlesex County should've been part of it.

He said he has to up the totals from what the map was showing.
Maybe he's hitting the sauce, because they're replaying his 10 pm forecast right now and he's just talking about minor accumulations overnight with the "big story" being the coming cold air. Never said anything about more than 2" of snow, except for areas close to the Delaware River, as per his graphic, which did not change from 7 pm to 10 pm (the one I posted around 7:30 pm).

Edit: here's the finally updated snowfall map from News12, as of 6 am today (as it says on the map). Maybe it was you and Sweetpea hitting the sauce together, lol.

Selected NWS reports, i.e., only from stations reporting after about 1 am (except for SNJ where the snow ended earlier), since any reports before that would be incomplete. A general 2-4" for the advisory counties (everything N of 276/195 in PA/NJ, except for Monmouth and Middlesex) and for Middlesex too.

Snow stopped in Flemington at 6am. Moons out. Have maybe 2 inches on the grass and much less on pavements. Maybe a 1/2 inch in spots, Don't know the amount in Hillsborough where all my accounts are but going to head out soon. May have to just shovel walks for some elderly accounts and commercial accounts are closed. We'll see...may scrape the lots if itdoesn't melt away by Monday.

Way less on paved surfaces everywhere except well NW where it was below 32F the whole storm.

Just woke up and took a nice walk outside in the gorgeous silence of a fresh snowfall. As of about 6:50 am we had 3.2" on the ground, as per the picture, and since then we got about another 0.1" for a final total of 3.3", as the snow appears to be over as of about 7:15 am. Damn fine storm, way overperforming my prediction of 1.25" - I'll take the bust, lol, as it's just so gorgeous out there, as per the 2nd pic of the pond across the street from us (have always loved that view from our house).

It's down to 30F. And now the bitter cold comes, so I'd expect us to have our first white Christmas in years, as temps won't go above 32F again until Tuesday afternoon (and just barely into the mid-30s and then back below 32F by sunset) and the sun angle for melting doesn't get any lower.

3.1” on the board in Ringoes, was expecting an inch at most
Yeah, our 3.3" was just slightly below my 1.25" prediction, lol. Wasn't quite as much of an overperformer as 2/17/24, when we got 11.25" in the Norlun Trough Deathband from Heaven vs. the 3-5" predicted, but still a substantial positive bust. I'll take it and I suspect most others won't mind this one, as it's a Saturday and accumulations on pavement for those outside of far NW locations was minor.

was just busy with life and work but caught up on americanwx what was going on, I didn’t even fully realize it was a Norlun/IVT. Makes sense because the radar looked unusual.

That deathband was incredible, biggest positive bust I’ve ever experienced. Was ground zero for that, picked up around 13”.

Yep, it's in my top 5 all-time snowstorms, due to the amazing unexpected heavy snow for several hours and despite probably not even being in my top 10 total snowfalls. The surprise element was key for me. I posted a link to the thread from that storm earlier in this thread.

Tough to get anything accurate given the melting the first part of storm. I would say 2.75-3 inches on grassy surfaces with far less on paved..most spots half inch but did find nearly an inch on the coldest spots.

Not enough for a plowable event

Maybe 1/2" stuck on cars, decks, etc. Nothing on sidewalks or roads here at the shore.
Yeah, it looked like the coast just couldn't get enough cold air in time to get better snowfall. Interesting that Long Branch reported 1.8" but nearby Neptune and Wall only reported 0.7" and 1.0" respectively. I guess the 7-8 miles further south made a significant difference, as it often does.

This PNS for the NWS-Philly looks pretty final...haven't seen one yet from the NWS-NYC; the 2.6" in Metuchen at 6 am is my report from 5:30 am. Spots in Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon and Morris all reporting over 5" of snow ftw. 2-4" in general for the rest of NNJ/CNJ/EPA and even 1-2" for northern parts of SNJ and the coast.
