OT: Minor Snowfall Christmas Eve Morning (<1") Likely

It's ridiculous that these towns don't pretreat the roads when a storm is coming. They're cheap and it causes accidents that could've been avoided.

Preliminary reports. I generally deleted reports from before 8 am for areas well NW of 95 and before 9 am for 95 and SE of 95, as these were very likely before the snow ended. Winners were 2.1" in Green Pond (Morris), 2.0" in Belvidere (Warren) and Wayne (Passaic), 1.9" in Sussesx, but almost all of NEPA, NNJ, CNJ and SENY/NYC got between 0.75" and 1.5", with less SW of Princeton and along/south of 276/195 and very little for eastern LI.

A few noteworthy locations: 1.0" in Central Park, 1.0" at Newark Airport, 1.0" in NB, 0.8" in Trenton, 0.6" in Freehold, 0.2" at Philly Airport and only 0.1" at Islip on LI and just a trace along the immediate NJ coast.

Well, the rest of December looks seasonable for a few days then a bit to well above normal from about 12/28-1/2, with little chance for snow, but we're likely to see a somewhat colder-than-normal and potentially "snowier than normal" pattern starting around 1/5 or so possibly lasting a few weeks, if the long-range forecasters are right, as per the post below from John Homenuk, a top mid/long range forecaster. Many, but not all of these patterns verify (the one I posted for mid-Feb 2024 didn't verify for temps, but certainly did for snow as it was quite snowy for most), given the chaos and uncertainty inherent to numerical weather predictions. Still fun to track, IMO. Might be time for a pattern thread. That'll really bring out the trolls, lol.

For those interested, for NYC, it will likely be the first white Christmas since 2009 - technically, a WC is defined as more than 1/2" of snow at 7 am on Christmas morning (since that rounds up to 1"). This was NYC's snowiest CE since 1998 when 2.0" fell. NYC's biggest snowfall on 12/24 or 12/25 was 7.1" on 12/25/1966, but two of NYC's biggest blizzards were on 12/26 (1947 when 26.4" fell - 3rd biggest ever - and 2010 when 20" fell - 7th biggest ever and underreported in Central Park by all accounts).

Yes I remember that. That was a fun winter thread.

Yes all my new snow melted and also losing the snowpack now from the other nuisance event
Unless you're operating a giant heat lamp, there's no way all of you new snow is melted, unless you're just talking about paved surfaces or you got a lot less snow, which I don't think was the case, or maybe a very sunny spot next to a lot of warm boundaries exposed to the sun (paved surfaces, trees/decks/rocks etc.). The snow will be gone after the warm-up and rain this weekend though.

Here are a couple of pics from about sunset in Metuchen. The first shows that today's snow on paved surfaces without much car/foot traffic (no snow was left on paved surfaces from Saturday since there wasn't much accumulation on them to begin with) held on pretty well on streets and sidewalks and the 2nd shows 0.9" on the sidewalk across the street from me vs 1.1" that fell today and that area was a little shady, but not in complete shade.

And the next pic shows we still have about 2.8" out of the 4.4" that fell since Sat (loss due to melting and compaction). Yes there are some south facing yards with bare spots next to paved surfaces and trees, but most yards have 1-2" of snow (my yard is more shady than most, hence the 2.8"). It will certainly be a White Christmas for most of CNJ, other than you, pictured below in your lair.

i dont live in a snowglobe I live in a mainly open area off of 206 in Belle Mead....I would say 25% of the grass was exposed...the same areas that were exposed yesterday perhaps a little more. Sure there are areas with maybe an inch but even in the snow covered areas the blades of grass are sticking up so its a way different picture here

im sure you can find some still left that fell this morning but most to almost all gone

I’m in Hamilton at my parents. Hardly any of the snow has melted from the front or the backyards (both of which should get sun during the day). I’ll take pictures later. It’s freaking beautiful!
Same here - and even today with a high of 36F and some sunshine, not that much melted, as per the pic below. Was so damn nice to have a white Christmas for a change. Kids were sledding all day at the hill/pond across the street, which was nice (pic is from about sunset, so nobody was still sledding then).

My in laws remember that 12/26/47 blizzard. They were living in a basement apartment in the Bronx and their daughter (my wife) was born almost exactly 9 months later.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Boxing Day 2010 might be my favorite snowstorm ever (that or Jan 1996), mostly due to the pre-storm craziness. We were in Charlotte at my mom's for Christmas (sister lived nearby also), as usual, when very late on Christmas Eve night, all of the 0Z models went from a small snowfall for CNJ (much bigger for LI/New England and had looked bigger for us on 12/22-23) to a projected 1-2 foot blizzard.

On Christmas Day I decided to take the family home after dinner a day early, leaving around 6 pm from Charlotte, as snow was starting there around then - did not want to miss a big snowstorm at home. After a white knuckle drive in 2-4" of snow and heavily falling snow, we finally outran the storm by Raleigh and the rest of the ride to NJ was fine. Got home around 6 am, napped, played soccer, and then watched the storm unfold starting on the afternoon of 12/26. Got about 24" here (had 28-29" on Jan-96).

That had to be one of the most insane storms I have ever experienced here. Not only for the snow, but the wind. How I got into work at the hospital before 9 am the next day, I’ll never know.
