It's been all sleet and freezing rain in eastern part of Readington Township.
Location? Plenty of reports of 3+" already for NENJ/NYC/LI where it's been almost all snow; seems the further NE one goes, the more snow. It's unusual for areas NW of 287 between 78 and 80 and further out in the Poconos and Lehigh Valley to get sleet while the urban corridor/NYC metro are getting snow. And further south in NJ, a lot more sleet and freezing rain - and especially in PA south of 276/195 with lots of reports of over 1/4" of ice accretion and branches down. That's bad stuff. Precip mostly over south of Philly to LBI.Things changed. No now 1 1/2 inches of pure snow on top of slush. Hope nobody has to travel cause it's going to be a real mess.
Are you getting ice accretion on trees and paved surfaces or was there enough sleet to just absorb the ZR?Icy mix of sleet and freezing rain continues in Belle Mead maybe half inch

As of 9:30 pm we have 1.0" of snow/sleet mix on the ground at 28F. Went for a drive locally on 287, 1, and 531 in Metuchen/Edison just to see what it was like and everything, including 287 and 1 was snow-covered and slippery with people going 30-40 mph mostly. 1010 WINS said lots of accidents (mostly fender benders) out there; I saw one on the shoulder of 287. Was pouring alternating snow and sleet and mix and now we're just about all sleet, although it seems like "larger" sleet pellets than usual for some reason and judging by a few other posts in our area, we're locked in to heavy sleet for awhile. Would rather have snow, but it's still pretty gorgeous out there. Radar still looks healthy.

As I had mentioned, I was way too pessimistic here, as we had a decent amount of heavy sleet and heavy freezing rain in the ~90 minutes after this post, so when I went out to shovel around 12:30 am, after the precip had stopped, I measured 1.6" of slop, which probably contained 0.5-0.6" of QPF (I didn't do a ratio, but saw a radar estimate in that range). If I had to guess it was 0.5" of snow (0.05" QPF), which I saw early, plus 1.1" of 2.5:1 sleet (0.44" QPF) and 0.1" ZR for 0.59" QPF. That's a guess, but I can absolutely tell you that this slop kicked my ass (and shoulder, lol) as it felt like a 5-6" of snow shoveling, as it took almost 2 hours. But on the plus side, I did get to meet allsnow from AmericanWx, who lives in Metuchen and plows on the side; he was plowing our street and saw me out there in my RU gear and asked if I was RU#s, so we chatted for a bit which was nice and then we both went back to work. The 1.6" was also probably more, but had compacted with the alternating sleet and rain, but anyway, it brings my seasonal total up to 12.8". Could be more next week.Switched over to freezing rain a few minutes ago, earlier than expected, so I just took my final measurement of 1.25" of sleet/snow, bringing our season total up to 12.4". Disappointing we didn't get the 2.5" of snow/sleet I guesstimated (or the 3.4" predicted by the NWS before the storm) and especially would've liked more snow, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Not loving having an hour or more of ZR, which could put down 0.1" or more of ice with temps at 29F.
A seasonal total of 12.8”?! From what was supposed to be one of the coldest, snowiest winters in a while. And it will be Valentine’s Day soon. Not much time left for snow. This sure feels like Kennesaw and Princeton all over again. As I had mentioned, I was way too pessimistic here, as we had a decent amount of heavy sleet and heavy freezing rain in the ~90 minutes after this post, so when I went out to shovel around 12:30 am, after the precip had stopped, I measured 1.6" of slop, which probably contained 0.5-0.6" of QPF (I didn't do a ratio, but saw a radar estimate in that range). yep a lot of hype but very minor 1-3 type events all winter except for one which had more on grass but still only 1-3 on roads. Looks like this week they are scaling back on snow amounts for Tuesday and looks like more wet than white for ThursdayA seasonal total of 12.8”?! Was thinking the same thing when I saw my neighbors tree and the string lights in my yard glazed over with ice. Just minus the snow from A Christmas Story.Crawled to work from Hamilton to Jamesburg. The trees & grass look like that Christmas morning scene from A Christmas Story. Everything encased in a glaze of ice. The entire trip.
Threw down salt just so I could safely scrape the windows of my SUV. Side roads a skating rink, main roads wet & slushy in spots. Parking lot was a joke; clearly the guy in charge doesn't have to be here today.
Depends. Do you have any dog-walking Karens in your neighborhood?Do you have to shovel the snow when temp going to 39 degrees?
I did the sidewalk to be kind. The last time I didn't shovel and they need to walk on the other side of the street.Depends. Do you have any dog-walking Karens in your neighborhood?
Most municipalities have an ordinance outlining when you need to have your sidewalks cleared. I've seen anywhere from 12 - 24 hours following daybreak after accumulation begins. My old hometown has a $2000 fine for those not complying. Can't tell you if it has ever been imposed. Some towns even have requirements for homeowners to put down salt/sand.I did the sidewalk to be kind. The last time I didn't shovel and they need to walk on the other side of the street.
I wish, that’s the kind you can take care of and can shove off in sheets. There wasn’t really getting under it.Temps are above freezing now
Once you make a crack in the ice its easier and comes off in big chunks
pretty much the same in Upper Somerset Countymaybe 3/4 to 1 inch of sleet here in Belle Mead total...much like I expected...never had one flake of snow that I saw
It was already melting at 6:45am in Center City Philadelphia. Very little accumulationI wish, that’s the kind you can take care of and can shove off in sheets. There wasn’t really getting under it.
This was just coming up liked shaved ice after scraping over and over. I gave up bothering and threw some ice melter on the sidewalk. The sun and temps will have to do the work this time.
You're lucky. I ran my blower dry after my first season and couldn't get it started the next year. Had to have the carburetor cleaned. The tech told me it was better to leave about an 1/8 of a tank with fuel stabilizer because dust and dirt accumulates when it's empty. I haven't had an issue since.Got about 4" in Bergen County but very heavy. Anyone shoveling is getting a workout. Bought a sowblower about 8 years ago and it hasn't let me down. Have yet to service it as it is only used a few times per year, last year not once. I do run it dry after he season.
Was just reading a Post article about how good the skiing has been in NY this season. It was a little overdramatic, with feigned shock about East Coast powder existing at all, but sounds like one of the best seasons in quite a while.Been all snow here in NW Bergen. Over 2 inches already and coming down pretty good.
Went to Hunter today to not have to deal with driving up tomorrow AM. Great day of skiing.
Sorry to hear that. My buds in our SLC office have not really been discussing skiing this year, so your comments kind of explain why.Was just reading a Post article about how good the skiing has been in NY this season. Been awful in the Rockies. I was expecting it, so not a total gut punch, but still bad.
Glad somewhere is having a good one!
