OT: Happy 80th birthday Mick Jagger

I was at a dinner years ago and met a semi-famous guitarist for a band that's opened for them. He told me on tour Mick is always in his trailer exercising on all this equipment while watching financial news on the bank of TVs that line the walls. He couldn't believe the guys workout routine.

Makes sense, he's still a dynamo on stage

I never got Jagger and the Stones.
I mean they were OK but Jagger always looked like a prancing chicken and sounded like a guy compensating for a lack of ability with stylizations.
I practically never listen to them - sometimes I hear them coming from Harley bikers driving around

Mick never had the greatest voice in RnR and I kinda felt all the jumping around live didn't help that lol. However they made it work on studio albums, he sounded much better. Awesome song writer and performer, and again, good studio vocals.

Yeah Stones aren't awful - I liked "Angie" and "Wild Horses" and some other things.
I remember pre-80s they weren't considerd an uber-band and then blew-up later for some reason.
I give them credit for hangling tough over times and not getting into PC stuff
I'll never forget Keith Richards descrining rap as "Mary had a little lamb set to a bad drum track"

Funny how subjective music is...agree on Angie but can't stand Wild Horses--automatic channel change when that came on lol. I'm probably missing some, but these are my top great Stones' songs:

Satisfaction
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Woman
Gimme Shelter
Brown Sugar
Get Off of My Cloud
19th Nervous Breakdown
She's Like A Rainbow
Happy
Rocks Off
Let's Spend the Night Together
Midnight Rambler
Ruby Tuesday
Mothers Little Helper
Last Time
Fool to Cry
Can't Always Get What You Want
Monkey Man
Live With Me
All Down the Line
Bitch
Tumblin DIce
Start Me Up
It's Only Rock n Roll
Sympathy for the Devil*
Can't You Hear Me Knocking

*the title sucks but great music and some lyrical value

They "blew-up," as you put it, because they were the leading band still around from the English invasion. People my age (boomers) want to see them to remind them of those days. And, btw, some of the songs (Gimme Shelter and It's only Rock & Roll are examples) hold up well.

I used to feel like you do

Pleae let me help indoctrinate you cuz you seem like a really great poster over the years and the Stones really are great lol

Do yourself a favor. Put on Exile on Mainstreet. Listen thru. Then Sticky Fingers. Sit back, relax and just listen for the next few hours

Then contemplate what people felt when this music first came out vs today's garbage

Context is important

The rooster man! Much stolen from Tina Turner BTW. He had a kind of nasal English voice trying to sing blues. But I give Jagger and The Stones credit. They really brought blues based Rock N Roll to the white masses in the US. Prior to that, it was forbidden fruit so to speak. Early R&R in the US was quickly condemned by the Establishment, much like how Rap music (of which I’m not a fan) was condemned by the Establishment..

It was the Beatles, not the Rolling Stones (who were considered "bad boys), who defused Establishment objections to rock 'n' roll. Even "adults" had to concede the Beatles were good.

The list of great tunes from that band that I still enjoy to this day is amazing.
Gimme Shelter being one of my two or three all-time favorite songs.
