OT: Phil Knight providing Oregon with unlimited NIL Resources

That's my issue with the GS philosophy of having a beans-n-franks offense that's supposed to limit turnovers while dynamic defense drops the hammer. Great defenses don't grow like weeds. RU is always a group or two short - not to mention lack of depth. DBs are the most consistent but after that its a flea market. Defense needs more athletic types but a few of those have to be heroes (like Ed Reed on GS team) who flash when you expect them to and then when you dont. Just "executing" only works in high school.
The beans n franks offense was necessary because we haven't been able to recruit that stud quarterback who could carry the team on his back, and be a difference maker. The Drew Allars and other similarly big armed quarterbacks have always eluded us because our value proposition isn't as strong as our peers. This is why I've been talking about the importance of NIL and Fieldhouse. Without it, we have to settle for lesser regarded recruits and hope they develop.

So we work to develop our own stud quarterback from recruits or transfers that joined. Hopefully, Athan continues to get better and becomes that difference maker next year.

Powell and Toure, should have been our athletic type Hero LBers. And for one bowl game against Miami last year, they were. This year they were held back by injury, and it was just our bad luck. I have high hopes that our incoming LBers develop into the difference makers we expect them to be. Particularly excited about McClary and Archie, whom I think can play for Penn State and Ohio State. Going into next year, Sanders will be the one stud we have on defense. Will have to wait to see how effective Toure is.

While we can appreciate your Don Quixote quest regarding NIL and the all important fieldhouse at RU, I just don’t think it is realistic unless RU finds a very, very rich Sugar Daddy who likes to throw around tens of millions of dollars. It seems a very small portion of Alumni are interested in contributing anything.

Phil's generosity to his alma mater provides benefits to athletes that go far beyond the Oregon Ducks.

Witness Hayward Field, Oregon's track and field venue. Phil poured donations into a renovation of a 100+ year old stadium, transforming Hayward into the country's - and arguably the world's - premier track and field venue.

Hayward has hosted the last five US track and field Olympic trials. Nine of the past twelve NCAA championships have been held at the stadium Phil rebuilt. For ten years running, Hayward has been the sole US stop on the Diamond League series, track and field's most elite global competition.

This benefits of Phil's donations accrue to Rutgers too. This June, Phil's Hayward was home to a Rutgers national championship performance in women's pole vault. Not often Rutgers wins a national championship, and it happened on the greatest stage in the sport.

Thank you Phil!

Why didn't you bid on the Rutgers apparel deal?

The next time people keep yelling Schiano, Schiano, Schiano, after a loss, they have to remember the playing field is not level.

Okay.

So how does Rutgers overcome that uneven playing field.

We are NOT going to level it by matching spending.
It's not happening.

So what's the next strategy then?
This is my problem with you and @365Poster24Seven constant complaining about lack of NIL.
We get it. We're behind. Thanks for the news alert.

Stop complaining and offer a solution.
You tell people to stop complaining about the coaching staff because of NIL.

Well take your own advice and stop complaining about NIL.

Offer a solution or strategy.

We either find money via NIL (via a sugar daddy or large corporations) or we fall further and further behind and go to mid-tier bowls from now til the cows come home

As I've said, pre-NIL, it was mid-tier from now until eternity
Post NIL, at least we have a shot

Better players yielding better results is entirely predictable.
How'd that work for Florida State this year?? 2024, 11th ranked class. 2023, 16th ranked class. 2022, 19th ranked class. 2021, 21st ranked class. Boatload of donors. Probably fantastic facilities. They must have had an entirely predictable, successful season. Right?

I should probably start this as a poll but the ultimate question is who and how should college athletics be funded?

  • Should it be funded by collective sport revenues (media deals, conference/league revenue, advertising)?
  • Should “fan” funding be limited to actual purchases (ticket sales, merchandise, game day revenue)?
  • Should “fan” money be allowed to supplement and fund athletics?

No rules or regulation will change anything unless you change the fundamental funding model of college athletics.

Was there an even playing field before NIL?
Is all this Nike money going to the Oregon Athletic Department or OSU getting $100m more in donations a better system?

Also, stop complaining about the billionaires and cancer research.

How many people here donate thousands of $$ just to park a little closer and sit a little closer for 7 days of the year?
Why can’t you park at the RAC, sit in the upper corners and donate that money to cancer research?

Florida State went undefeated during the regular season last year and only lost to Georgia in the bowl game. They lost a lot of players to graduation and had 10 draft picks. Alabama played for the National Championship Semifinal last year and had three losses this year. Washington played for the National Championship last year and was 6-6 this year.

Even teams with the appropriate level of support, teams have down years. Support does not guarantee success, but it’s very hard to be successful without it. Look at all the playoff teams and you’ll see that most are significantly supported with NIL and facilities.

- Oregon
- Georgia
- Clemson
- Notre Dame
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- SMU
- Indiana
- Arizona State
- Texas
- Boise State
- Tennessee

including the transfers they had come in last year as well. Including the QB...

The thing is- we have had some pretty big donors over the past few years that were going 7 figures a year, someone also paid to get Dylan and Ace...The $20 mil is going to help level it up some too. And while I agree with Al and a few others- that to climb to the top, we may need a sugar daddy donor specifically to NIL, the who concept of it really drives me and a lot of others crazy. I think this goes to some of our heavy donors as well.
It has become a "give your money to get wins" rather than spend your money to build something to actually be proud of. It is now more ego driven than giving back to your school in something lasting.

There isn’t a rich sugar daddy walking through the door. We might as well be waiting for the Great Pumpkin or Santa Claus. It’s either everyone gives something or it doesn’t get done and we live with mediocrity most years.

What was moronic?

Pointing out that people who waste money so they can park 50 yards closer shouldn’t complain about how other people waste their about money?

Think about the premise of this entire thread…begging rich people for money so RU can pay a bunch of mercenary teenagers that will enter the transfer portal the second a bigger check comes along. I get it - seems like it’s the only way to compete. But as far as I’m concerned this is an arms race where everyone loses except the few hundred (may be a thousand) athletes.

We overcome the lack of level playing field by providing the support to level the playing field. That’s what North Carolina fans are doing. North Carolina fans are paying Belichek $10M plus providing $20M in NIL per year. That will yield results in time. They already have a solid facility which has been renovated.

Either we provide the support or live with the mediocre results.

I shudder to think you want to compare Rutgers to UNC Al. UNC famously known for creating classes athletes did not need to attend. They got caught and skirted around sanctions due to a loophole (a very smart one by the way, but pathetically applied). News alert: This still occurs. My nephew is at UNC, had a football player in his class who showed up twice all semester. Class attendance was 25% of the grade. Think he passed?

Irrelevant.

The point is UNC fans have decided to provide their football team the resources to succeed.
Syracuse fans are doing the same.

Not a boatload of donors - under 15k boosters

Not fantastic facilities - just broke ground on FOF, share the Moore w all other sports

Certainly worked out well in 2023, when we got screwed out of a playoff birth

Recruiting is the life blood of any successful program, there’s no two ways about it

You sound like a guy that’s probably due for a visit from the IRS. Perhaps you could benefit from an audit.
You sound like a guy who makes less a year than I pay in taxes. Sorry you made poor choices in life and have resorted to demonizing the wealthy.

College fb needs a commissioner with a set of balls.
All schools athletic departments need to be separated from the academic side and operate independently. Going to be semi-pro then make it that way.

Sounds great big shot. We are all thankful that you just volunteered to fund RU sports you cheap F. Here you are talking big about your bankroll and at the same time crying we have no NIL money. Go ahead - put your money where your mouth is. Yeah, that’s because you are probably collecting some public work pension clipping stamps pretending to be somebody. Just go away unless you are gonna write the check.

Or my name is hanging in the hale center. And nowhere in this thread have I complained about lack of NIL or people not donating. Unlike you, I don’t judge how people choose to spend their hard earned money. And government has taken more than enough from anyone who’s made big time money.

Or my name is hanging in the hale center
OK so what’s your name? Should be easy to spot in the Hale Center. If you were such a big donor you wouldn’t be crying about the lack of donations on a message board like the rest of us poor folks. You would be fundraising with all of your rich buddies.

Most of those teams have better coaching.

Relevant.

Programs will cut corners any which way they can to get/keep their players on the field. Give them money, give them cars, given them free grades. Relevant.

I’ve never once cried about peoples donations or lack there of. You keep struggling with that fact. Maybe your lack of comprehension is why you aren’t successful.
And yea, zero chance I tell you my name. Enough people here know who I am

Comical…I won’t even reply because you are clearly out of touch with reality and who actually pays taxes in the U.S.
Please tell me who pays taxes and who doesn’t. Let me guess, your the guy says illegals are a net positive for the economy.
